So it was really hot at the game Saturday. No doubt. I’m ready for winter. I hate summer and I’ve lived in central MS all of my life. Just prefer cool/cold weather to hot. The extreme heat isn’t good for babies, young children, elderly. I’m 37 and I don’t “workout” or have a 26.2 sticker. I work in A/C office M-F. I do, however, work in the yard or maybe Bush hog trails in the woods, etc for 4-5 hours straight regularly in this same heat. My dad turned 62 last week. He’ll work in the garden, cut grass, etc all day long. Farmers do it and lots of folks that work manual labor for a living. My granddad worked outside with cows, in the garden, etc until he was 80....Sitting in the sun at the game was not fun maybe because it’s a mental thing that you’re just sitting in it. But wear sunscreen and drink plenty of water and I wouldn’t think it’s that dangerous compared to working in it. I think it’s an interesting case study of sorts to see if in 2019 most folks just pay others to do their outside work (lawn, etc) and just aren’t accustomed to being outside in summer. So, I guess my survey is how many on this board (or people you know or are associated with, in general) are 15-60 years old and no serious medical issues that never do any physical labor outside?
I'm 52 years old, don't have any serious medical issues, and I never do physical labor outside.
I pay people to cut our grass, mulch our flower beds, fertilize/treat our lawn, and maintain our lawn irrigation system.
I pay other people to do it for several reasons, including: 1) I don't want to do it; 2) I don't own a lawnmower, a pickup truck, a wheelbarrow or other necessary equipment/supplies; 3) I don't want to do the research/work required to buy supplies/equipment; 4) if I were to do it, then I'd be doing it by myself and it would take WAY too long to complete (hours or days, depending on the job); and 5) my personal time is worth MUCH more to me than what I pay others to do this work for me.
There's one exception: every time it snows, I shovel the snow off of our driveway and sidewalk. I would pay somebody to do that too, but nobody comes around to offer to do it. I live in Northern Virginia, so it doesn't snow too often (e.g., 2-5 times every winter).
That said, hot weather doesn't bother me too much. I grew up in Mississippi and played sports in the blazing hot summer in high humidity. Sure, it was hot and I sweated a ton, but I just ignored it and endured it.
But that's just me. I certainly realize everybody is different, and different people have different levels of tolerance with regard to hot weather.
People in the Washington DC area start bitching/moaning when the temperature gets to 90 degrees in the summer. I just laugh when I hear such talk.
