Inbound plays

The gals are great BUT why can't the coaching teach them how to inbound the basketball against pressure. I'm pretty sure after a made basket that the inbound person can run the full length of the out of bounds area under the basket. You don't just stand there like a statue and pass it into traffic or make a crappy pass time after time. Or god forbid have a second gal step out out of bounds, pass it to her and let her make the inbound pass.
Please someone ask the coaching staff for a simple answer. I've seen two or three games with this problem.

Inbounding the ball after a made basket has been an issue in a couple of games. Personally I think they should use a guard or wing to inbounds and yes you can run/move along baseline.

I don’t disagree.

Although the downside of doing that is you take away another ball handler and they are shorter which makes it more difficult to pass around the defender.

When I coached I always had my 3 be in the inbounder for the 1 or 2, while my 4 would lay a screen around the elbow. I had the 5 at side of the mid court as a possible quick outlet.

It cost us a big ooc game last year. We never made a single adjustment as they turned us over repeatedly. Don't recall the game, but was a big coaching blunder with lack of adjustments. I'm still surprised teams aren't making us pay for leaving Hannah in at the end also.

I agree with a lot of this. Another thing to add is I wish HS would quickly grab the basketball after a make and get it thrown in quickly before the press has time to set up. Quite a few times it was like she was thinking the clock was running and she could burn a few seconds which only allowed Maryland to get the press set up. Get the ball in quickly a let CC get upcourt

Passing in general has been a struggle the past few games. Post passes have been an even bigger problem. Even players like KF who have been nearly immune to turnovers this year had 3 turnovers last night and 4 vs MSU. That's more than her previous 6 games combined.

Now part of this has to do with the competition. Both MSU and Maryland are very good teams that thrive on getting turnovers and converting them into points. The other part is that for a high level team, Iowa is simply prone to turn the ball over. Iowa ranks really high in assists at 5th in the nation which infers a lot of ball movement via the pass. They only rank 16th in assist to turnover ratio because of a high turnover rate in which they rank 103rd nationally. Youth is somewhat of a factor in this being the youngest squad in 13 years. The worst offenders are all underclassmen while the best, with the exception of Houston are all seniors.

The worst assist/TO rates in order are:

Hays F
Deal F
Stemlow Soph
Heiden Soph
CCW Soph

The 4 best in order are:
KF Senior
Houston F
Mc Cabe Senior
Hannah Senior

Not all, but many of our turnovers are because we are a post oriented offensive team In my opinion. Most teams are more pick and roll or 5 out teams spreading the floor. While we attempt to spread the floor and create space with our hi-low set it’s tough to do when your high post is not a threat to score from there regularly. If we want to pound it in to Ava and Hannah (which is a strength of this team) we will have some issues until McKenna gets to campus.

I'd prefer they grab the ball with urgency and get it in before they can get set up. It's a little maddening to watch them allowing the press to get in place. They seem obviously coached to take their time, getting into a set play I guess. It's just too rigid when it probably needs to be a little more instinctual.

When McKenna gets here the offense will completely change, I think Jan will spread 4 out with a post in, this should be an advantage to Addie and McKenna to create off the dribble.

I love Hannah but she should not be throwing the ball in when the other team is apply pressure. She also shouldn't touch the ball late in the game when we're trying run some clock. She has way too many bad passes.
When she got the ball at the high post late in game it appeared she couldn’t get rid of it fast enough. No pivot to face basket etc. last two ff’s she missed, facial expressions were not good. I am not bashing her, we need her big time if Hawks are going to contend for BIG title and make a run in NCAA. Hope it’s not too late for confidence to take over.

That is the part of Deal game I like the most. She can shoot the three but can also drive and hit the pull up jumper or continue all the way for a layup. Mccabe is a spot up shooter only on offense. Scares no one off the dribble. Fuerbach when she does try to create off the dribble typically is a bad pass, travel, or out of control turnover. CC a little small to drive inside and finish

The only thing Chit-Chat does poorly..............she doesn't shoot enough! 🙂

That girl is money when the ball leaves her hand, and she's quick enough to get her own shot, but I do think she gets a little "nervous" when she gets inside 10 ft. or so with more traffic due to her height, which makes her a little tentative (and rightfully so I suppose).

What a find this little dynamo was! 👍

Next game watch the position of Hannahs elbow when she shoots a jumper or especially from the free throw line. Her elbow is bent at an angle perpendicular. Not in line with her body. Basically when the ball leaves her hand theres no staightline guide. Even if she points at the basket and follows through the ball probably won't go straight where shes pointing. Its really bad form. A good reason to be a 45-50% free throw shooter.

Elbow and forearm are to be an extension of knee and lower leg etc. Unfortunately you are correct with HS.

You're being really unfair. She's a 50-55% free throw shooter. 🙃

I think a lot of it is nerves and mental pressure. They know how to get the ball inbounds, but they’re not staying locked in or focused in the moment.

FWIW, I think they choose to use Stuelke as the inbounder to eliminate her from being a "catcher" and then being intentionally fouled right off.

Kind of a "pick your own poison" scenario.

Kind of a problem, especially if your a senior or a 6th year grad student, don't you think....
Experience sometimes doesn't matter. Everybody has limitations. She actually has a very good assist rate and assists/TO rate for a post player, so it's not like she can't make the pass or good passing decisions. You do sometimes see her nervousness when she gets the ball on a wide open look under the basket and bangs it across by rushing things unnecessarily. Inbounding the ball requires a cool head and the clock is counting down, increasing the pressure to do something. I'd honestly rather have KF inbounding the ball given her best on team turnover rate.

Could it be Jan is clueless, better at rah rah than coaching. Does anyone else think she is asleep at the wheel when making adjustments or lack of. More of a fashion persona. (Kim Mulkey) I trust her assistant coaches more than her. I’ve never seen her get on her players for making a dumb foul or multiple turnovers. She reminds me of being a den mother rather than a coach. These girls need some tough love when they continue to make stupid turnovers they’re not getting it. Fire away.

No need to fire away, You are allowed your opinion, I personally don’t think she is a clueless den mother but that’s just me. She coaches to her personality, I can’t remember if it was pregame or halftime but Lisa said she was a glass half full type person, She said Jan was a glass is overflowing type person. Also we as fans have no idea how Jan critiques in locker rooms, Film sessions and practice.

So, I don't know any more or less about what Jan says to the players off camera than you do (which is nothing), but if she's as clueless as you say, how does she have the youngest Iowa team in 13 years, sitting at 17-2/8-0, tied for first in the B1G, and contending for a 2 or 3 seed in the tournament in just her second year at the helm?

Last year's mid-season skid turned things around into a team that took down USC, and was a blown-call away from beating UCLA. Must have been all unicorn magic and luck.
