I don't want to get into a debate about in-state vs. out-of-state basketball players. I don't really care where the scholarship-player was born.
However - there is one thing I have always found amazing. Go look at the roster in the 1950s and 1960s. WVU had A LOT of in-state players. The 1959 team - that played for the national championship - had 12 of their 15 man roster from the state of West Virginia. That could never be duplicated today.
I have often wonder how a team made up almost exclusively of West Virginia players could compete for a national championship. My theories include...
-We ranked 29 in population in the 1950 census. (43 now, I think.)
-African-American players weren't fully integrated into college athletics yet.
-Fred Schaus was that good of a coach.
-Dumb luck led us to have prodigies like Hundley, West, and Thorn - within a 10 year period from WV.
-There was more of a basketball-culture in high school in WV at that time.
Those are just guesses. But it is crazy to look at the 1959 roster and think they played for the national championship. Would not be possible today. -Winter Tim
