If you thought this team had the potential to be special with some returnees, it should have been because this freshman class has the potential to be really good. Not because Quickley and Richards could carry us.

I’m gonna disagree here. Getting the SEC player of the year and a first team all SEC big man to return when you’re short an experienced guard and a solid big man is exactly the difference between a bad team and a great one in this case.

There are so many of this board that defended that stupid *** draft night statement from Cal...

That statement said to parents, players, handlers, etc “go to Kentucky and get to the nba in a year”. Unfortunately, a lot of stuff has caught up to us, including other schools paying players, but he created a beast which he can’t stop feeding and now it’s coming back to devour him.

I love winning the title in 2012, but you all don’t realize how lucky we got with that nba lockout in 2011 because Lamb and Jones were gone and I’m not sure we’re winning a title with a lineup of Wiltjer, Miller, Davis, Teague and insert SG. We’d be competitive no doubt, but doubt we’d be winning a title.

that was the dumbest statement he’s ever made

Honestly it could be reversed and said it’s silly to think that way which is why we all have opinions. :)

we lost to evansville............... then lost every player except 1..... .then lost a recruit to byu.

if you cant see the massive red flags that something is badly wrong....... you probably didnt see them with tubby or bcg until it was too late either....

What does getting upset by Evansville in November have to so with anything?

Losing a recruit to BYU?

How about they were 25-6, SEC Champs and a likely 2 seed in tournament. Just signed #1 recruiting class by a wide margin.

The loss of transfers does concern me but the other stuff- guys to NBA out of Cals control.

Loss to Evansville- wgaf?

We were likely winning over 30 games last year- historical upset in "November", smh.

Recruits- hell we lost Wiseman to Memphis, Cunningham to OK St, Brown to Texas (probably). We cannot get every single recruit there is.

To compare this to end of Tubby and any of BCG is epic hyperbole.

the worst loss in kentucky history .............. if you dont think losing at home to a mid major is worrisome.......... then you're more of a brain dead yes man than i thought.

i'm simply just saying cal needs to change some things........... starting with 2 assistant coaches.

We were 84-52, .617, the last 2 years of Tubby and the 2 years of BCG not making past 2nd round (twice), losing in 1st round and missing tourney once.

We are 113-30, .790, the last 4 years under Cal with a Coronavirus, a Sweet 16, and 2 Elite Eights.

Like I said chicken little, EPIC HYPERBOLE.

If you want to say change some stuff to get over the top, fine I agree- change out assistant, add some sure fire 3 or 4 year kids, all good to push us over top potentially.

Comparing us/him (UK/Cal) to us/them (UK/TS BCG) is a freaking agenda driven joke.

Would like to give you a "half like" I don't think bad and great is the example. I think good and great is the example. As it stands now/today I think we will be good next year. If you add IQ and Nick we are on a whole other level.

At this point it is unlikely that you replace either one of them with someone new today. However, you could look at it as:

Askew/Mintz replacing Hagans
Boston replacing Maxey
Clarke replacing IQ

Who replaces Nick? Does Brooks give us more than EJ did last year or what Nick gave us? Can Ware and Jackson replace Brooks/EJ from last year? Can Allen do more than JJ did? What about Fletcher? Does Toppin play and how good does he become- half as good as brother?

So many unknowns. We do know we need a big. I am also very confident that we have a lot of talent in the group as it stands today.

100% disagree.
You add Richards and IQ to what we have coming in and you just went from a team that currently has massive holes, especially at the 5, to having elite players at all 5 positions.

Clarke and Boston are elite freshmen, but they aren't going to make up for the holes we have in the roster. They can't just take on college basketball with little help from the other 3 spots in the floor.

If you were to add two elite players like IQ and Richards, this team easily goes from bad to great.

You make a good argument, but I'll rebut with this. Maybe we have different standards for UK basketball. You say the team we currently have is not a bad team, it's" good".

I say it's a bad team, because right now it's a doughnut team and we are going to be relying on a bunch of unknowns.

I'm pretty sure Clarke and Boston are going to man their positions and I think Brooks will do well, but those are the only 3 I've got any confidence in right now. The rest of our guys need work and polish and most haven’t played ball at this level or tried to execute Cal's switching defense.

Here's another issue that you may be overlooking. There might not be any summer workouts, there may not even be any fall workouts. Maybe individual stuff, but there's a strong possibility that the season will be kicked off after a month of practice time. You know who is going to he affected the most by this? The teams that lost their players from the year before. UK and Wichita State.

If Cal doesn’t add a legit 5 man, I don't think we'll be very good at all. Even with the watered down schedules we're playing now, I see 10 losses. That's not good, that's a bad team with good individual players that will get drafted off potential after 1 year. Rinse and repeat for 21/22.

We have the #1 recruiting class and that's awesome, but when you lose 95% of your productivity, the #1 recruiting class alone isn't going to save you.

Good points regarding the upcoming season. Specifically around practice time. Camps are already canceled i.e. father/son so players won't be around then and obviously with unknown of COVID it may roll into fall.

I guess all of that rolls into the "unknown".

I agree we need a big.

If stuff plays out where there is little practice time it may be a rough beginning for sure.

Hopefully one day both sides will come to a common ground.

Both sides make good points, but neither side wants to budge.

I think we can all agree that losing players to the GL is not good for UK and the inability to recruit bigs to UK is disturbing.

We all can also agree that nobody wants Cal to resign, move on or get fired. We all just want what's best for UK.

It just sucks that we could have had the best team of the Cal era, but we lost way too many key guys, most of them to the GL.

I can't imagine that even the most positive fan thinks that's a good thing for UK basketball.

This. Its the same pattern every year. It's good to always be relevant and in the conversation, but something has to break this cycle because in the conversation is all we're going to be with this. 90% of what we are doing is grear. We need to get back to that 95+%. We are always just a piece short.
Kinda sad
Bama and Clemson football lose some players to other schools. Duke doesn't get every kid they want. NOBODY does. Good grief. The irrationality here is astounding.
They might not get every 5 star that they want, but they'd get 99% of the 3 star players that they actually wanted.

Cal is an incredible recruiter.

He's not good at retention or attrition. Not sure what he could do there other than alter who he recruits.

He's an average - at best - game coach which is why he needs superior, balanced and deep talent to be a legitimate contender. Short of that, we're just in the conversation. Lately, the latter seems to be the trend.

You know I thought you were more mature then that, if we are so called friendly posters why can I make a little fun at you, we weren't bashing each other? We have been on different sides but I thought we respected each other. That Nate comment was so lame that I laughed when I typed it but for some reason it triggered you to instant anger? Maybe I need to not kid with you after all, its seems that you don't find it amusing but it was truthful so there is that. Sorry but you and I have a different opinion of snide.

I’ll keep it short and sweet since I was mentioned in the OP.

- Cals had more talent than anyone and has not got the ultimate goal achieved but one time in eleven years. Not good enough.
- I hold one person responsible and that is Cal and his inabilities as a head coach and not a recruiter.
- I do not blame refs. It’s just waaay beyond that.
- I’m not ungrateful for what he’s done. He brought Kentucky back to prominence but truth be told, he is not a good in game coach. He’s literally blown 3 maybe 4 title games.

I love Kentucky and even though a lot think I do not, I simply am tired of what is happening here. It’s disgusting what is happening between college and professional basketball and Cals driving the bus imo. Sorry not sorry.

To me, post 2015 Cal reminds me of the Joe B Hall years, post 1978, in terms of success. Which is not a bad thing, or a knock. Joe B's later teams were very good. 1984 should have won the title. The problem for Cal is, Cal's first 6 of 7 years were exceptional and extremely difficult to replicate.

Excellent comparison. I just feel like is a cheap shot even comparing Cal to end of Tubby tenure or BCG.

Cals front half was about as good as you can do in modern college basketball less the 2013 NIT.

EE, FF, TITLE, NIT, RU
vs
FF, 32, EE,16, EE

(Covid)

The whole thing with Cal and I know it is "if's and buts"...win the Title in '14 or '15 and everyone is singing a different tune IMO.

I think this is spot on. And I think a lot of the sunshine pumping really has more to do w/ fear than anything else. Fear is a powerful thing. That's why you read a lot of "what, you would rather go back to BCG and the last two years of Tubby?" As if that's the only alternative. It's fear-driven more than anything.

I just don't think Cal can win a title with this model. It's not 2010 or 2015. And we're not going back. And God bless him I think he's trying to find the balance, but he created a beast that's kinda bigger than the program right now.

The Cats haven't been a 1 seed since 2015. Cal will always get these guys to improve, and in March they will almost always be better than in November/December. But I just think there's a ceiling with this model right now.

Hard to tell since we don't know how these guys will adapt to the college game. The team is very young but the talent is here with four 5-star recruits on the roster. How many other schools can claim they have as many?
