Bottom line...assume I make 80....do you look into the crystal ball and see relevance in my lifetime? Or do I continue to relive Tommie, Eric and the crew?
Absolutely not – based on leaders at the University, leaders in the football program, and boosters of influence. They make the United States government look effective in how they’ve run the country the last 20 years compared to the lineup of bumbling idiots that it continue to find new and innovative ways to step on their dick.

No reason your program couldn't be turned around in 2 seasons. You have more resources than MSU and Mel Tucker did.
Truth in your point, with that said HCMT is an old school coach who believes in playing solid football. He’s surrounded himself with experienced coaches, (2) being former Cornhusker coaches in Els/Gilmore. Contrary is HCSF who has/had his buds that can’t coach and who have no expertise over HCSF. This is one of the reasons that there are no adjustments made, because they know nothing else.

You can fix this in two years, make Frost or his replacement keep their word! He said he would combine the old Nebraska way (the power option) with his Oregon Air RAID, he gave up on that after year one now you got what you got. Players want to play for Alabama, Oregon, and Oklahoma because they stick to their roots. Bring in an Academy staff who know discipline and structure and in year two you’ll have 8 wins. The majority of our players save one or two receivers want to be an option offense because that is Nebraska. We never went to the recruiting pool to get six or seven four star receivers we developed the strongest, hungriest most physically dominate team in the country and high schoolers knew it. We didn’t just have the best team in the 80’s and 90’s we had the team with the biggest TV audience and the best brand name in college football. You didn’t get that by playing multiple players every game who don’t choose to practice, Frazier, Berlinger and Glover played multiple games with injuries and never sat out a spring practice.

So you witnessed all 5 National Championships and saw a crazy good run from 1970 to 2001? I mean that's like saying I slept with every bond girl from Diamonds are Forever (Jill St. John) to Die Another Day (Halle Berry) but fretting if I'll get to sleep with just one more.

Dude you got yours! Rest easy.

How many losing programs made a coaching change and became a champion quickly?

Not many. Alabama had a few rough season in the mid-1990's and early 2000's, but those were surrounded by ten-win seasons. Every coach before Saban had at least one, which we can't say here.

Oklahoma, had some rough years in the Gibbs/Schnellenberger/Blake revolving door, but that was really only five down years, and Blake left the cupboard fairly stacked for Stoops to lift the crystal football in his second season.

USC alternated good and bad seasons until Pete Carroll got there and won championships.

But what do all of those teams have in common? They all dominate recruiting in the most talent-rich areas of the country. Even if Nebraska started owning Denver/Kansas City/St. Louis/Minneapolis, which they won't, I don't see them having access to that kind of talent. Ever.

What Nebraska needs is a coach who can build long-term success. Scott Frost is not that guy. He's not a student of the game. He's not known for his attention to detail. He doesn't have a clear vision for the program. He doesn't command the respect of his assistants. He's not the guy you can build a program around.
Norman, Oklahoma is a talent-rich area? I drove through there once and it seemed to be a unpopulated dusty area of the country with lots of stores selling Indian souvenirs.

The state of Oklahoma sucks ***. That has zero impact on recruiting.

2022 Class - 14 four-star players, half from Oklahoma/Texas
2021 Class - 15 four-star players, half from Oklahoma/Texas

After UT, most Texas kids would prefer to play at OU. They may as well be called North Texas. No Texas recruits choose TTech, Baylor, TCU, etc. over OU, and that is a huge recruiting advantage. There is a reason OU has always hitched its wagon to Texas, even at the expense of their Big Eight brothers, because they aren't stupid.

They always say, "The University of Oklahoma, the best Texans money can buy."

65 here. Watching since the Steve Sloan Orange Bowl. UNL grad, lifetime in the state. Glad to have seen all five titles. Longterm prognosis for me and Nebraska football both uncertain. Hard to care. It’s easier to just stick toothpicks in my eyes if I want pain. Focusing on grandkids, good books and the lawn. Always the effing lawn.

If you want to make a difference put all the money in your will to go to NIL and maybe NU can be relevant again lol.

Graduated in 72.

First big memories were 69 when USC came to town and we lost by 10 and made the Sun Bowl beating Georgia. It was Tom's first year as the OC although I admit to not remembering the exact year.

Amazing we were shut out against K-State and OU in 68 which led to Tom being the new OC in 69 I suppose. They didn't have Rivals back then. ;)

Then in 70, the eyeopener was the tie with USC in LA the second game, the only spot on their record. Devaney had his struggles as well, naming Osborne the OC was obviously a turning point in Nebraska football history. Until then we were good but the Bob had two 6-4 records in 67 & 68 that didn't get many people excited, not like what was to come.

I remember the game in Lincoln. USC was bigtime. Then in '70 I remember going crazy when Joe Orduna went 67 for the TD, and all of a sudden it looked like NU was headed for great things.

Man, Tru, that was exciting times watching this program begin to join the elite. At the time there was USC, Notre Dame had been great, Georgia was top notch but falling and I remember Paul Rogers kicking 5 fg's in the Sun Bowl with NU winning 45-6 or so. NU was still chasing Tennessee, Arkansas, and even Ohio State was a helluva program.

The next year the corner had been turned and other than 67 and 68, NU was at or near the top of college football for almost 40 years. I graduated in '72 also.

I don't know but when I'm near the slab I hope I ask more important questions about my existence than if the Huskers will be good or not.

I remember as a kid TO winning all those games and conference titles and people wanted him fired because he couldn't win the big one. Lol. I'd take those years back in a second. We are a joke now.
As I have been out of town I went to my favorite store for buying beer yesterday afternoon when I got back to town. Stan, the store manager sees me from all the way down the end of the aisle and he bellows out my name then says “Nebraska! What was that?”. Yes, we are a joke.

Happy birthday, Spartacus. In honor of Spartan huskers 70th birthday, here’s a throwback for him. Who would’ve thought you were living the best days of your life at age 55.
