The quality of our baseball radio broadcast has taken a serious decline. I've been listening while working Friday nights and it's just bad. Jim is well past his prime and Polk is awful. Polk keeps wheezing into the mic all the time and it drives me nuts. And if I hear "arm side run" one more time, I might murder someone. Whoever had the bright idea to put a geriatric booth on the air should be fired.

That said, Jim would be OK if he still had Bart or someone younger paired with him to help carry his water a little. But Polk doesn't just add nothing, he's a net negative that makes Jim worse. Surely we can find a better way to have Polk around the program.

I partly agree. Jim has lost a step. But I like Polk in the booth with him, even if he does breathe into the mic. I think he adds something to the broadcast. It’s not the most professional sounding combo but it’s endearing.
I’d love to hear Neil Price call games. He does an outstanding job with football and I know he did baseball at Kentucky. (He can be a little verbose for basketball)

I think Jim probably steps away sometime in the next couple of years. He’s in his mid 70’s and retired from the university and other sports years ago. I’ve always been given the impression he didn’t want to work well into his 80’s like Jack did. You can tell just a little bit now that Jim is slipping, you could REALLY tell it in Jack’s last few years.

Neil was Kentucky’s baseball radio guy, so I expect him to do well once he takes over baseball. Really like him in football and basketball.

I love Jim and Polk calling the game. They will talk historically and get very nuanced into little things in the game. I really enjoy it. Baseball is a very “little things” game, and I enjoy having someone like Polk in there that can talk knowledgeably about those.

He's good at just calling the plays. I'm certainly not complaining about him. But, he's not a state guy, so he doesn't have the experiences to talk about etc. Wyatt really helps him. But the back and forth on those things isn't there because he's just not experienced much from an MSU standpoint. In baseball, that's important to me.

The problem is that radio isn’t as big as it once was. I would love to see the numbers on how many people still listen to the games compared to watching on SECN+. For the younger generation of fans I’d definitely say they hear more Bart and Charlie than they do Jim and Ron.

Granted, radio at the very least always comes in handy for those times you have to make a run to town during the middle of a game.

Even Jack slipped a bit as he got older. As far as I'm concerned Jim has earned his stripes and he can keep on until he decides to hang up his mic or drops dead with it in his hand, his choice.

I have been listening to Jim since 1979. I have always had two issues with him: (1) he almost never gives the score unless someone scores or the inning ends. Back before the internet, if you tuned in after the first pitch of an inning, you could listen for 15 minutes without Jim telling you the score; and (2) he is unable to correctly pronounce many words of more than two syllables. I used to cringe every time he tried to pronounce the state in which Boston is located. It always came out Massa two *****. But, yes, he is slipping pretty badly.

Seriously though, I've always thought Jim was an excellent baseball play by play man. It's very difficult to call baseball with all the downtime and he did a lot of games by his lonesome through the years and kept me interested. Agree he could give the score more often and surprised he never learned that basic skill from Jack.

I encourage some of you to listen to other college teams baseball voices. You might appreciate even 70+ yo Jim more.

Jim is the baseball equivalent to jack in football and basketball. Hie voice immediately tells you you are listening to bulldog baseball and stirs up fond memories of times when the only way you could ‘watch’ state baseball was through ihis voice. If I was a new listener I might not be impressed but for me now the nostalgic value of his broadcasts are off the charts.

I wondered that too, but you know I’ve heard ******** were always good at spotting other ********.... so there could be something to it??

I personally have only met Jim once and he was very nice and gracious to me. I enjoy his play by play and Ron has to be the most knowledgeable color guy in the game. Jay and John are in the top of the knowledgeable color guys in college baseball as well. Hell, we got it made as far as I’m concerned. Also, I am probably one of the few that still listens to the radio broadcast more than watching SEC plus. In fact if it isn’t Charlie and Bart on the SEC broadcast, it’s a no-brainer.

To expect Kellum to be good on any broadcast is to expect disappointment. Yellum Kellum is just terrible. He's kinda fun to listen to if Ole Miss is losing, though...he loves to cry about referees/umpires. He knows what his audience likes to hear.

Disagree. I think Bart and Charlie do a great job. You can tell they are very knowledgeable of baseball. And they are not near as 'homerish' as a lot of broadcasters.

eh, agree to disagree. Far too many personal stories and anecdotes. Again, they fill up every second of oxygen in the room with something. Its baseball... On TV... We are watching the game. They fall far too close to the ESPN CWS model of broadcasting with Ravech/Perez than to the Ben McDonald/Kyle Peterson form which should be the model for anyone doing this.

You know you've heard the same stories over and over and sometimes he says words the wrong way but he's still your uncle. Personally I'd love nothing more than for Jim to call a national championship win for us then go out on that note.
