Because I think it might be a little nitpicky....

But is the wording on Steves book cover correct? "the truth inside the explosive NCAA case against ole miss and the culture that enabled it"

Is enabled the right word there? Can a culture enable an NCAA case?

Slow Saturday night.

The wording struck me as a bit unwieldy as well.

"Endorsed" would be the most accurate word to have used.

Didn't he say it was a mock-up before posting?

Eta: Let's see & read the published version before we start fretting. Did you stop to think about it being a marketing tool to gauge reaction?

Definitely not fretting about it. Just struck me as a little off, but then again... a wordsmith, I am not. Just wanted to hear some other opinions.

"Enable" is used because that's typically a word associated with something bad. The culture of these people enabled the bad behavior.

I disagree that enable has an immediate connection with things that are bad, but that's irrelevant. I agree that the culture enabled the bad behavior. But his sentence does not state that. His sentence states the culture enabled the NCAA case and that doesn't seem right to me.

Enabled is referring to "the truth".

Pretty much the only time I hear enable is referring to someone enabling a drug addiction or another certain detrimental behavior.

I worked in a technical marketing role for several years. We routinely used the word enables to describe features/benefits on products.... as in "feature x" enables "something positive".

It's properly worded. Ole miss' quick fix culture, enabled the violations, which led to the NCAA investigation.

From Merriam-Webster
[h=2]Definition of enabler[/h]

  • : one that enables another to achieve an end; especially : one who enables another to persist in self-destructive behavior (such as substance abuse) by providing excuses or by making it possible to avoid the consequences of such behavior

Right and the point of the original post is that the culture enabled the cheating. The NCAA investigation was an uni tended consequence. The word enable implies intent if you ask me.

Perhaps "provoked" would be a better choice.

Agree. The culture provoked the investigation. The culture enabled the violations and violators, but the subject of the sentence is the investigation.

That being said, I'm fine with the sentance and the book can be filled with bad grammar as long as it roasts the **** out of UM.

I'd like to see "matrix" and "bong mask" in the subtitle. Add "cheating"

to the current subtitle and it flows better.

the truth inside the explosive NCAA case against ole miss' CHEATING and the culture that enabled it

It is exactly the correct word.

My version:

The truth inside the explosive NCAA case against ole miss and the network that created it.

I agree that the wording is off. The subtitle states that the culture in Oxford enabled the NCAA case.

The culture enabled boosters and coaches to participate in rampant cheating. The NCAA case was a consequence of that.

I think it is the best part of the title. TSUN's culture of privilege, entitlement and duplicity is exactly why they are in the situation they are in. It existed in the 1800s when they tried to add an ag school and no one showed up and it exists today as they try to lie and cheat their way to a winning program.
