We were a year late hiring Jon Sumrall. Will Stein may end up as a decent consolation, but I believe Sumrall is going to win big at Florida.
Josh Schertz is the best up and coming coach in college basketball. If Todd Golden goes to the Warriors, I look for Florida to beat us to the punch again and hire Schertz.
Schertz would be on my top 3. That guy can coach.

That was my thoughts exactly and he would absolutely kill it....
Pearl probably would succeed. He'd also be the one coach to make me consider abandoning UK basketball until he's gone due to what he supports and promotes. This is also the guy who took his team to Epstein Island.

Can people not see what’s going on? Sure Pope is in over his head, but UK has a much bigger problem than any particular coach!

And it’s the same problem that is going to keep UK from getting an adequate replacement when Pope does leave…

Beyond the delegated Revenue Share for MBB, it’s glaringly obvious UK cannot compete with the rest of the major programs in the NIL era!

Pope and JMI are the current smokescreen punching bags, but it will become even more obvious when the next AD tries to get the next coach to compete with the same financial limitations.
It doesn’t help to owe Mark Stoops 33 million dollars.

Somebody like Jai Lucas. An up an coming coach that can recruit and has been at the highest level as an asst. You get him before he wins big at his current location.
Established Coaches you make say no: Golden (Florida), Underwood (Illinois), Hoiberg (Nebraska), Oats(Bama)
Young targets: Lucas (Miami), Hodgson (Providence), Calhoun (Cincy), Schertz (Saint Louis)
Pro Targets: Vogel, Donavan
Golden Parachute: Pearl

Honestly just take a look at which young coaches are winning with their mid-major/lesser p5 schools. There's always a few of them. And not all of them should be candidates, but you find the one who has a lot of success, good with recruits, proven to win with a few different teams.. and you get that guy. It will be a huge payday for them, they likely wont say no. And it may not work.. but if it hits, you could land the next Hurley/May. And once you get them, and pay them.. oh and dont **** on them every time they lose (thats a big one), you can keep them for 30 years if you want to.

What's worse than some of the beatings coming? Having to listen to some chronic crybabies all season with their constant "faaaarrrrrr Pope" posts. If some of you don't think the way the fans overreact to everything has an effect on recruiting and public perception, then you should pay attention. Yes, the program is nowhere near elite right now, we all know it.
Whiners like you have zero vision. If you got your way this place would be a ghost town. Then what would you have to complain about?

The program is doing to suffer in ways we cannot tolerate for the next year because of an incompetent AD and a spineless administration. UK and Pope have been embarrassed this offseason.

Next season will be 11-19 or worse. Pope is building a roster that you see at the likes of Boston College.

Unacceptable on every level.
This is probably shaping up to be better than the first year talent wise.

19 losses seems at least hyperbolic and overwrought.

I would agree that recent results are not elite but I'd definitely argue that the program still most definitely qualifies as elite.

The program's legacy is elite, the program itself is not. No way anyone could think that it was. Players are not coming here because of the name of the school, otherwise they'd be here. They're not commiting because of the coach. What criteria do you think still puts us in elite status?

In think this is basically a semantics thing but we are essentially in agreement. I think our history, fanbase, resources, facilities, and continuing national interest from media and other fan bases alike certainly qualifies as still being Elite. I have no real qualms with the fact that you hold a different perspective but that's my 2 cents worth.

We aren't firing Pope till after the season. Do you think youre getting Hurley or Oats or Golden or Otzelberger or whatever candidate you desire right NOW? Come on. The only guy that would make sense that might come today is Pearl. If thats the case, fire away
They are going to have to leave before portal season anyway no matter when we make the move. So now is as good a time as any.

An equally important question: if we keep Pope, what kind of season will we be looking at? 10 wins? Couldn’t any other coach with a pulse exceed that?

At this point in the portal season and the disaster his roster building has become, I’m not sure how the program can justify keeping him. I realize the season and roster are a loss no matter his employment status at this point (because this should have been addressed immediately after Iowa St), but this program is seriously dead. Completely. Has there ever been an offseason that left so little to positively anticipate? At least with a new face, maybe the fanbase can find a reason to rally.
Feels unprecedented. The guy is fighting for his job, his career, his legacy, and he craps the bed like this. I can’t remember a more lame duck coach entering a season. He should be shown the door immediately but those with less imagination counter, he’s getting a 3rd year, as though it was ordained from the heavens.

Pope must either be delusional or near suicidal at this point. How can he bear the misery that he knows is coming? And no foreign wars he can declare to distract us from his incompetence.

There is no way in the world they would (or could?) pony up that kind of money. Buyout and first year of Donovan's salary.

Offer Hurley 15 million a year. Ten year contract. Fully guaranteed. Buy his wife a mansion and private plane so she can fly back and forth to keep her happy.

I’d probably just skip Dan Hurley on the coaching searches for Kentucky.
