If Walker is not going to make it at RB?

If the clearance doesn't come in for him, the RB room looks like Hill/Gibson/Murphy/Witherspoon.

Is that enough for a season? Do you look at moving anyone else to RB in case of emergency?

Right now the projection looks cloudy for Kareem to be running the ball in the maroon and white for 2019.

It’s enough for a season imo. We have two guys that can be #1 RBs in the SEC and carry the load for a game while getting spells from weatherspoon or Murphy.

If both go down, that’s bad news for almost anybody. I have a feeling Spoon is gonna be really good in the future.

If that is who we have and we have an injury or two the first thing you do is move Malik Dear and tell him to get over his feelings. Your next in line would be Marcus Murphy.
ETA I may would rather have Dear carry the ball before anyone after the first two guys anyway

According to Paul and Steve, Dear doesn’t want to play RB and doesn’t like contact. Stupid for sure, he could’ve been a really good RB.

Dear wouldn't have been a good RB. Yes I know how much he weighs & his body type. He wouldn't have made it 2 weeks as a RB.

Marcus Murphy isn't a SEC RB. He's a SEC athlete, BIG difference.

6 ft. 5 in. , 236 pound QB Tommy Stevens will get some "carries" as well - lightening the load on the RBs a bit.

Knowing Malik & having watched him since 11th grade.
So it’s about his mental state rather than physical? I can buy that, but his physical stature and ability is 100% RB worthy. And he’s pretty much thrown a college football career away because of it.

Still got his free education I guess, but that would be a regret later on in life. Or maybe it’s not that important to him.

He hasn’t made it much longer than that as a WR, and his snap count has been about the same as a two week starter at RB. We’d have nothing to lose.

Both. Mentally he's not a RB but even physically he's not. Yes he has the frame for it but he doesn't have the physicality for the position.

Well he doesn't have the frame to play wide receiver. You can change a mentality. You can't change being built like a tailback. He can't crack the starting lineup on the worst set of receivers in the SEC as a senior. I'd say he chose poorly.

We’ve been having this discussion since Dear arrived on campus in 2015. He’s not a RB, he doesn’t want to be a RB, the coaches don’t think he has the capabilities of being a full-time RB. It’s not going to happen. He’s just a guy stuck in no man’s land at this point.

So last year, how many running backs did we use? 2 and a 3rd for some mop up duty? I just dont see a 4th getting any appreciable playing time. We probably need all four for the roster just in case, but I cant see a big issue here. The other thing is that Walker will provide needed depth/starter next year if Kylin has a good enough year.

This has to be true at this point otherwise it makes too much sense to move him. Problem is he also hasn't shown he's a WR. His biggest plays have been with the ball in his hands either on KO returns or from behind the line of scrimmage. To me, if he isn't a RB he isn't an SEC player, so...he isn't an SEC player. I was surprised he stayed this year as a graduate, but judging by the Keith Mixon situation it doesn't seem like there is a big market for short slot receivers with no resume and an injury history, so I guess he made the right decision.

He was a great RB in HS, I saw him play several times. Never understood why he wanted to play WR. I think Mullen though he was the next Percy Harvin.

Looks like we already moved Murphy back to create some depth (he was on defense last year), so I'd assume we're set. You're typically won't need to play more than three RBs even if one gets hurt.

Even with Hill missing a couple of games last season, our #3 and #4 RBs combined for 46 carries --- and over half of those came in two blowout games (SF Austin & Arkansas).

Yup, at this point. The ship has sailed on him. If he had stayed healthy, he still would have been a solid and maybe even good slot receiver. Not sure if him not staying healthy was a result of not staying in shape and putting too much strain on his body or if it was just bad luck, but he had the capability of being an SEC slot, especially for a coach that gave him some handoffs and/or bubble screens.

Seems like there was a huge opportunity for him at RB, but if he didn't want to be a RB, then he probably wouldn't have excelled there either. Just hard to be good at an SEC level if you're heart is not in it. Really have to be a freak athlete.

The irony in all of this is that BY FAR the best asset Dear has is his ability to run after the catch. Now that is not the same as running between the Tackles but its still running nevertheless.

Even in HS he played more Wildcat QB than a true RB position. He Wasnt big on contact & physicality then either.

I’m well aware it’s not going to happen. He wasted his career and that’s on him. He has the physical tools to play tailback at his current weight. If he would have lost 25 pounds he could have played slot receiver, and that’s also on him. It is what it is. He chose to not play the position his body was built for and sit on the bench behind the worst receivers in the SEC.

Alec Murphy - he was buried at RB so they moved him to LB and he mostly played on special teams last year. Moved him back to RB this year.

I would think there's 0% chance of Marcus Murphy being moved to RB.

Joe stated once more they are still waiting for paperwork to finish up soon. Still think Walker isn't going to make it?

Frankly, I don't really see him contributing here even if he does make it, so I'm not too hung up on it either way. He was just going to be a third teamer at best that we used to take carries in the 4th quarters of blowouts. Between Alec Murphy, Robert Rivers, and Witherspoon's four games, we should be able to cover that without Walker.

We need him next year, not this year. If Kylin goes pro we are going to have a redshirt freshman and 2 true freshmen at tailback. We will have to hope there is a good grad transfer option if Walker does not come or does come and doesn't look very good.
