If there's a path to Joe getting this turned around...

It starts on Saturday.

He has given us no reason to think he can have his team ready to beat a decent team on the road, and a lot of what he's said the last two years has proven to just be talk... At the same time, you're playing a team that's at best going to finish 7-5, who hasn't really been competitive in their losses, and who struggled to beat two of the worst teams in the SEC. This is also a program we've had success against since Manziel left (4-1 against them since 2014).

If Joe wants his big, emotional press conferences to be received as anything more than the ramblings of a buffoon who is cracking under pressure... If he wants to silence the doubters about his ability to have his team prepared for a game away from home... this is where you can realistically make a statement. I say realistically because while he could technically make a statement against Bama, there's just no chance of that happening. There is a window of opportunity on Saturday, though.

Should we come out with a clear plan offensively, and then continue this improving trend that we've shown on defense, we will have a legitimate chance to win. Find a way to do that, and then take care of business in our other remaining non-Bama games, that's a little bit of sustained momentum where you've given your fan base some reason for hope and optimism. You can point to a bright future with Shrader and many of our young defensive guys, and you can point to a strong finish as proof that we're improving and that there's reason to think the trend can continue into next season.

But it starts on Saturday. If it's more of the same, the pressure will only continue to grow, and he is essentially coaching for his job against Arkansas and Ole Miss. But find a way to get the job done and maybe, just maybe, this regime has a glimmer of hope. If you made me pick today, I still think we lose by double digits. But even as skeptical as I am, it's only fair to acknowledge that this is a real chance for Joe to restore a little bit of faith.

Strong post.

Thankful we get them at 11 am. I figure they will be ready to roll at home after a road win. While I don't like watching losing football, the drama has been fairly entertaining to watch.

I think we probably see slightly better effort than Tennessee, and lose like 31-14.

If we could somehow get some momentum and win the rest of our games not name Bama then the fanbase is a lot happier going into next year with a 8-5 record. All of these games are winnable but we have to get better coaching on the offensive side of the ball. The defense with every issue they have (Tutorgate, DTs, and lack of depth) seem to at least give us a chance in most games. The D did have a letdown at the end of the KSU and UT games but our anemic offense never gave them any help.

It has to start Saturday.

Even if he gets to 6-6 with wins over Ark, ACU, and UM, it's meh. Give me 7-5 with a win at College Station - even if they're not good - and I'll buy a little of his "we are getting it fixed" coachspeak.

He may have has his "Barry Odom moment" at his post game presser Saturday, but I'm not going to get my hopes up like I have in the past. Joe is always a good sound byte, but he actually showed for once like he can be a coach like Mullen where he demands his players play hard and those type people are successful because they work too hard not to.

Having said that, I still don't have my hopes up but "LSU post game press conf Joe" could become a successful coach if he acts like that 100% of the time from here on out...

I agree with 100% of what you said.

good post.

So say he does go in and wins this one but then loses to ole miss and arkansas. Texas A&M loses out except to UTSA which highly probably if they lose to us. does it change anything?

we have TAMU, Bama, Arkansas, Ole Miss

they have MSU, UTSA, South Carolina, UGA, and LSU. They won't be favored in their last three. They are really good and they aren't very bad. if they beat us they could still only be a 6-6 team because of their schedule.

I still think Arkansas on the road and Ole Miss at home are still his tests.

6-6 would be meh but it will probably buy him another year. Might buy him a serious look from Rutgers too.

That’s why I said that it STARTS with A&M. He can win on Saturday and he’ll still have a lot left to prove before this season is over. Winning this one and then losing to Arkansas or Ole Miss leaves him in the same spot at the end of the year as he is right now.

We were actually in a fairly similar spot going into last year’s A&M game. Had we won the bowl game, it would have been perceived that we figured some things out after the LSU game and finished strong. But then the Iowa game happened. He needs to win 5 of the last 6 including the bowl game to get back to the fanbase feeling somewhat satisfied. Winning at Kyle Field would be a big step toward that goal, but it would still only be Step 1.

We will get blown out or at least handled fairly easily. My nail-in-the-coffin Moorhead moment was the Tennessee game. Coming off an embarrassing, humiliating loss where your freshman QB showed some grit, fight, ability, production long after the outcome was decided, and what does Joe do after an OFF week? Start Stevens, come out flat, play with little effort as a team, and all against a bad team. THAT game should have been Joe's circle-the-wagons, coaching-for-his-job game. The song-and-dance will continue until Joe is let go. We just have not established an exit date.

Have a good day, gentlemen.

I get what everyone is saying about winning at ATM but last I saw, they’re a 10-1/2 point favorite. As mediocre as they are, they’re giving up 10 points to us. I just didn’t see us covering. I’d feel better if it were 3 point spread. Vegas expects ATM to handle us and I do too. I just don’t think this is the game we can say “we have to win” because I don’t think we will, even with a good effort.

Moorhead's only path to possibly being a successful HC at State is to beat Arky and OM and the administration go all in money wise with letting him hire some excellent (expensive) assistant coaches that can prop him up until he learns how to be a head coach at this level and HOPE his savant looking *** can figure it out.

edited to ad: I just think we hired the wrong guy

If our defense plays as hard as it did against LSU in the first half (and has no broken coverage), we're in it with a chance to win at the end. But those are two big ifs...

I have respect for the OP and think his analysis is spot on (and the effort his post took commendable considering my own mounting apathy), but I agree with Barkus. The fat lady finished a while ago.

It was Auburn for me. Everything that's followed that game and will continue to follow is just further evidence of incompetence at this level of football. I would love to be wrong, but I'm pretty damn sure the possibility of Moorhead success in this job is long gone.

I agree about Saturday being big. They have some things to build off of from the LSU game.

I feel like we've had several "this is a big game(s)" before for Moorhead (Outback Bowl, KSU / UK, Tenn). He's usually let us down. Hopefully that starts to change.

Frankly he’s been close to 50/50 in those types of games, which can be more frustrating than if he lost all of them in some ways because it’s a constant start and stop and you can’t sustain any momentum.

Lost to Kentucky and Florida last year, then beat Auburn, then looked pathetic against LSU, then beat A&M and won the Egg Bowl, then lost to Iowa, then lost to Kansas State, then bounced back with a good performance against Kentucky, then had the fiascos in Auburn and Knoxville.

The constant back and forth can be infuriating for fans. To me it’s a big part of the reason why our men’s basketball program has had issues getting a sustained following. It’s win a few, then lose a few, then win a few, then lose a few, on and on and on again.

The issue for Joe is now the trend is starting to become lose a few then lose a few more. The wins are becoming less frequent. That’s obviously got to change soon if he’s ever going to get this fixed.
