My bad…. I should have started this thread, “In the old days, what bowl would an 11-2 Big Ten runner-up made?”
that is the correct answer. The same CFP committee that has been doing it for 4 teams took the 12 team playoff. We were ranked #4, so would have been in semifinal vs Oregon. Not sure what bowl that would have been - maybe Rose. tOSU would not be in the playoff.
Some people just can't resist any opportunity to make disparaging remarks to insult others.

You seem to be struggling with the concept of a message board.
I'm still learning the ins and outs, but I've come to the conclusion that without the messages it doesn't seem to work right.
What the heck, we are not trying to cure cancer on this board, and discussing this question is more desirable than yet another rehash of whether Big Game James is worthy of PSU

To be clear, I responded to the OP's EXACT wording.
He said "if there was no CFP?"
He didn't say "what if the CFP only took 4 teams this year?"
The 4 team playoff has been called the CFP since the 2014 -15 season, so I presumed that he meant exactly what he said - "no CFP".
So, if there isn't a CFP ... it's is impossible to determine how bowl matchups would look.
