If Not With This Team, Then When?

Yes it hurts like hell that we GAVE away the chance at a perfect season and #9. But what I'm most upset over is if we can't win with this great of a team then how can we win one? It's looking everyday like Cal's first title came because we had potentially one of the best players to ever pick up a basketball. Anthony Davis type don't come every other year. I just don't know what to think.

If this was the nba, we'd have a ton but with the one game format, it's tough.

I don't expect a title for quite some time. Actually, I'll never expect one because they're hard to get especially with officiating like tonight.

I had that haunting thought, just a few minutes ago.

But, it will come.

Just got to get hot at the right time.

I agree wholeheartedly. All the posts I read about Cal staying long enough to catch UCLA makes me think it's wishful thinking. Too many blown opportunities for that to ever happen.

um,

Imagine if we had this team LAST YEAR. we would have won it all easily.

It's rare to have 3 #1 teams in the final four, and it happened this year.

It's one game shot, we made 4 final four in 5 years. That's the key to winning championship.

Same thoughts running the my mind.

Everything was in place to win the title. We had EVERYTHING.

But a lot of factors are involved in winning it. Hell, last seasons team would've gotten blown out by this years, and they made it further.

Just keep faith.

For one, we kind of benefitted from a terrible SEC.

Secondly, we are a year out from limping into the NCAA tournament and playing in the National Championship verse a team who also limped into the NCAA tournament.

Thirdly, there is no more successful coach over the past 6 seasons than John Calipari.

Excellent post. As long as stall ball in the final few minutes of a game continue to be part of Cal's playbook, our chances for winning another title are slim. His take the air out of it approach cost him a title at Memphis, nearly cost the 2012 Championship and now has us packing our bags for home AGAIN after the semi-finals. Until HE changes, our chances will continue to suffer.

Yes, relax. It's not like we have Tubby or something.
Cal just needs to put experience over his ego.

Me either. Not sure what to think and don't want to say too much because of emotion. I'm also a little mad at our coach. Feel like he didn't do a good job tonight.

Had a real great chance to actually win it in both 2011 and 2014 as well.

In 2011 played UCONN with Butler waiting and barely lost by 1 point would likely have beat Butler.

In 2014 we win 4 games I thought we might not win then we lost the game vs #7 seed UCONN the one time I was super confident we would win.

Last year was really unlikely when the NCAA tournament started but we were right there.

Winning a title is so hard to do to win 6 games in a row not sure when we win another one.

1998 to 2012 was a long time. Last year's loss was heartbreaking in the final but I kept saying well those guys might have left had we won and we would never had this shot at 40-0 so maybe it all works out in the end.

It was a magical season but I think most people here are like me when I say winning championships is what it is all about.

Still was a great year we may win another title but we will never see 38-0 again.

During the 2012 season I kept telling myself to enjoy the season because I didn't think I would ever see another team like that one again. I was wrong as we once again seen another great team this year just fell short is all.

Great season guys.

It's all about matchups, plain and simple.

Duke got the easier path - we definitely can all agree. But we had a barn burner to get through, so even the best teams ever have mental let downs or let the moment get in their heads.

Look at it this way - this entire tournament all we've heard is how much better that UNLV team was than our current team, yet the outcome was exactly the same. Doesn't mean we aren't up there as one of the best all-time. Just means the luck ran out a game or two sooner.

Probably a year when our fans stop being too damn arrogant for their own good. Just because you are the best team during the regular season means jack sh*t in the tournament.

Our fans betting so much money on us to win gave vegas a reason to root for us to lose

When you have people who control the game hating Kentucky..... you can't give them more reasons to want to screw you over

Wisconsin is a great basketball team that will beat Duke. We had them on the ropes and Deckers step back three buried us.
No shame in losing to these guys, they played a great game and made the big plays in the last three minutes.
End of story.

I think you are 100% wrong. Cal did a phenomenal job as did the kids. Wisconsin played better tonight and got one egregious call in their favor and then took advantage. This was a fantastic group that we all should be extremely proud of.

Hopefully all the "we will catch UCLA" talk will end.

It should be illegal until Kentucky wins at least #9.

.

And the notion that this UK team was the best in the last 30 years is laughable. We only have one semi-transcendent player. I think you need at least two to make the claim. The best teams in the last 30 years didn't have 7 or 8 squeaker against inferior teams decided in the last 3 minutes of a game.

Titles are just damn hard to win. It does not always go to the best team. It involves at least a little luck.

I'm not sure that it is reasonable to expect Cal to get us to 10 or 11. It's just hard.

All about match ups and you need 5 players on floor that can score. We had WCS Lee Johnson who couldn't score. When we have 5 on floor we may win again

Guys, we were 38-0 but really could have had 3-4 losses. This was a great team but certainly had flaws. We really missed Poythress and his athleticism on the wing. Willie was usually a liability on offense, Dakari took a step back from last year, Aaron never really got into a groove as we hoped - yet we still were a great team. I'm crushed as most of you are but who knows, some of these guys may decide to come back and go for 40-0 AGAIN! We could be better next year with a few things falling into place.

We just won one in 2012 went to finals last year and final four this year. We had a difficult road this year the field didn't open up for us the way it has for duke. Duke will have one tough match, we had 3

Titles are hard to win...this is not some new revelation.

And yeah, Cal is 1 for 6 in Final Fours in his career...and so was Pitino until he won in 2013.

It is all about match ups and a lot of luck goes into it once you get to the Final Four. Duke got lucky in 2010 with their match ups, and did again this year. I fully expect Duke to win on Monday and win their 5th national title. If UK beats WVU in 2010 and Wisconsin 2nite UK probably has 10 titles come Monday evening....but did not happen.

If the Twins come back with Ulis and Booker along with Dakari, Lee and Poythress we will be a top 10 team. Along with the potential of others returning and the incoming freshman we'll be right back in the mix.. I will say though.. this is the worst ever loss..

do you realize OP that EVERY YEAR except for 1 we have been a huge contender for a title? and one of those years we won it. i hate to use the word stupid but its not smart to think that we will never win another championship.

This is why it's ridiculous, laughable, and hysterical for people to make championship predictions prior to the tournament (and for some fans, prior to 4-5 seasons ahead).

Could you imagine??! People saying Cal should win 2-3 more titles?? Could you please inform me who is going to be the 1 seed in the West region in 2019?

What a bunch of buffoons. The FACT is, whether it is cliche or not it is a FACT, that you cannot predict what is going to happen in a single elimination scenario. It's what makes the tournament so fun, and the predictions so STUPID.

So, to answer the OP's question: nobody knows. If you do know "when", then why are you on a message board instead of placing future bets for the 2018 basketball season? It's not won on paper, its won on the court, in a game-by-game scenario!

Its insanely hard to win a NC. I mean..
one of the greatest defensive teams of all time didnt make it to the final which showcases two teams that hang their hat on offensive production and favorable whistles... Speaks volumes to the direction the game has gone. The days of multiple championships in a row are gone.

In today's game where u have no clue how it will be called from one half to the next...and complete roster turnovers... getting to the Final four and winning 38 in a row is pretty amazing fellas

Identifying the physical parts needed and getting them is much easier to do than trying to evaluate the inner being. Not that you need a bunch of guys with that extra drive within them, but you do need a couple that are great competitors everytime they step on the floor. The type that gets the 50/50 balls and plays within himself.

You better hope my golden boy picks UK because we will be hurting in the backcourt if he doesn't. Hurting to score points period.

2010 and 2015 we had the clear best team and us losing will have handed Duke 2 titles. This year is 2010 all over again. I'd bet anything Duke kills Wisconsic. Already beat their *** once this year and that was in Madison. Add in that Wiscy just won their National Title and will be happy just to be playing Monday and you have a blowout.
