Maybe it's time to rethink this process.
Cal was at UMass.....
Self was at Oral Roberts....
K was at US Military Academy....
Who is the next hungry, tough as nails up and comer who has what it takes???

Don't want another old man, preacher, NBA farmer, drunk or cheater.
Wish I had faith in Barney to find the diamond in the rough.

That is the correct way to go but it is a roll of the dice. Barnhart might (probably) get it
wrong but anybody else might also get it wrong. Predictions are hard, especially ones about
the future.

Self was at Illinois.

Cal was at Memphis.

Those guys had grown a lot from the time of their UMASS/Oral Roberts days. Not apples to apples.

I agree with the idea of a young, upstart- I wouldn't mind an NBA guy.

Don't love Golden but he fits the mold, just don't love him.

I’ve said this for awhile. The thought process that you need final 4s on your resume to be a candidate is overplayed. More often than not you get an old coach that doesn’t have the drive anymore like a Bill Curry.

You need to find someone who has built at least 1 of not 2 lower level programs like Oats at Buffalo and then his first few years at Alabama before he just got his extension. Once you wait for them to be solidified completely, in today’s era, guys are content where they are.

They are making millions everywhere , not just the bluebloods. Every P5 team plays on national TV weekly now…not just the bluebloods. The landscape is different. If you’ve turned a low pressure gig into a yearly top 10 team and feel you can compete for titles there then they just stay like Few, Wright, Drew, and so far Oats.

You take the shots at the top 3 names in the game like we are doing….after that you look for a Golden or LLoyd. Ppl that say they need to show tournament success don’t realize that once they have F4s and top 5 rankings yearly….they’ll likely just stay there p

Idk...he just doesn't *feel* like a top-caliber coach to me.

Just doesn't feel like he has that *it* factor.

I could see him pumping out similar seasons every year at UF, never getting past the first or 2nd round, and them letting him go in 4-5 years. Completely plausible in my mind. So handing him the keys to Camelot seems...ill-advised.

I was referring to where they were prior to moving into bigger jobs. They were good coaches or wouldn't have moved up.
Btw....Cal took UMass to the National title game prior to Memphis gig.

If we miss out on Donovan too, we might as well just blow up Rupp Arena and the Craft Center and just give up. If a program like UK is at such a low point we have to try to hire some washed up re-tread or some nobody from a mid-major, we are up **** creek anyway.

Donovan is most likely getting fired barring some miracle. He could possibly have Camelot fall right into his lap! If he passes that opportunity up (he won’t if properly offered), he’s dumber than Hurley’s wife😭

Well he took them to the Final Four, not the Title Game, but I get your point. If there is a young mid-major coach out there right now with a huge personality and has a Final Four to their name- hell yeah let's hire them!!

Problem is that person doesn't exist.

Porter Moser fit that mold but he has been a total dud since taking over for a Hall of Famer in Lon Kruger in Norman.

If Donovan is a no, I would go in this order next.

1. Pearl - Would have us a competitor the soonest
2. Golden - Really good young coach with huge upside with Kentucky's resources
I like Pearl a lot as a coach and I think he's the personality type the job needs. My only concerns are his
age and that his heart might explode if he got an offer.

If Donovan says no, we should just completely go off the tracks and hire Luke Murray for cheap for 3 year contract and see what happens

Just had a call with a friend who is connected to college ball and I do not believe this but said Pitino will take the job for 2 years, hire his son and at the end of the 2 year stint he will take the AD position and little Richard would then take over.
No way but who knows

I’d rather have Cal signed to two lifetime contracts than Richard Pitino.

I believe the program is closer to what you describe than any of us want to believe.

What has Golden done to even get a serious look?
What has any of the candidates currently left done to get a serious look? At some point we are going to have to invest in someone who we think is the next up and comer. I am not a fan of hiring some old boring dude with an archaic offense though.

Sean Miller is out there. Good Xs and Os. Has coached at a major P5 school. Recruits well. If not for Kaminski and Whisky he makes back to back F4s. Just up the road at Xavier.

Agreed. If we miss on Donovan (I pray we get him), then I want a promising young guy with fire. Someone that eats and breathes it.
