Orgeron went back to the NFL the year after he was fired, as did Croom. Orgeron got back into college though, with Kiffin at Tennessee, after one year whereas Croom stayed in the NFL and did nothing, and ultimately wasn't retained and retired in 2017, about the time Orgeron became LSU coach. But let's say he got back into coaching somewhere in 2010, and really leaned into being a recruiting guy, learned to delegate the coaching and just did the talking part, appearances, etc. Instead of trying to be an offensive wizard, which he most definitely was not. Could he have worked himself into a second shot at a Tennessee/South Carolina or similar and then made something happen? Obviously he would never have gotten the Alabama or Auburn job, so he can't say it was the perfect fit like Orgeron at LSU, but Tennessee seems like a place a guy like him may have worked (nothing else has).
I mean think about it, neither Dabo nor Orgeron can coach a lick, both lucked into their jobs, and got them almost nearly with just momentum, and kids playing hard FOR him. But they can recruit, and have learned to just get out of the way. Neither would make it in the NFL, and neither did Croom. Recruiting is specific to the college game.
