If Cignetti Would Win It All Again in 2027?

What happens to college football? I think the odds are low, but I am not putting anything past him.

I think Cignetti winning back-to-back Championships at Indiana would be a severe catalyst to an already spiraling spending frenzy in college football. We'll look back at 2025 NIL prices and compare them to real estate prices in 2008-2009 in 5 years.

If Indiana can do it, so can we will be the motto of 20 or so programs who have money, but have barely tasted success. This will create a bottom up and middle out spending boom.

I think it's going to happen anyway over the next decade, but Cignetti wins in 2027, and it'll happen much faster.

This has been going on for over 50 years for some teams. The biggest opposers are the ones without the advantage anymore. This is the new normal and pure supply and demand dynamics. Not everyone can sustain the amounts now so the over all cost will come down and level off.

Them winning will cause further escalation. (And to be honest, it already has)

Same as what happened when Alabama kept winning titles and forced other SEC teams' hands, along with what happened in the overall picture of CFB when the SEC as a whole kept finding themselves in and winning the NCG.

Teams are getting to the "too big to fail" stages and are desperately throwing money away in the attempt to win a single championship........................and the revenue that comes with it, because after all, this is still allllllll about money/revenue (at least in the universities' and conferences' eyes).

Remember when:

* College freshmen were not eligible for varsity competition (changed in 1972)
* The Big Ten only allowed its conference champion to play in a bowl game which, of course, was the Rose Bowl (changed in 1975)
* Scholarship athletes couldn't work for pay
* Iowa high school athletes were barred from attending summer sports camps
* Iowa high school girls played 6-girl basketball, with three girls on each team limited to their own half of the court (offense or defense). A lawsuit spurred change, so after a transition period (1985-1992), Iowa went to standard 5-on-5 in 1993. Iowa was a major holdout for the 6-on-6 game, often citing that "full-court play was too strenuous for girls." WOW. It's all true.
* In 1980 there were 15 college bowl games. Last year there were 47.
* Only conference champions were allowed to play in the 16-team NCAA basketball tournament until it expaned to 32 teams in 1975. From 1979 to 1984 it continued to expand to 40, 48, and then 52 teams. In 1985 it went to 64 teams and to 68 teams in 2011. And for the 2027 tourney, plans are to expand to 76 teams.
* The Final Four was held in traditional basketball arenas, with a few exceptions, through 1996 when the Final Four was held at Continental Airlines Arena in New Jersey. Since 1996, the Final Four has been held in domed football stadiums. (The 1971 Final Four was staged in the Houston Astrodome.)

Sometimes it's interesting to step back and realize how things have changed . . . sometimes for the better, sometimes not so much.
