To be honest, I’m actually appalled by how this Ash thing is working. He is an elite DC but he needs elite players and it seems like all your older players have peaked. I think what’s going on is he went full Lovie Smith and started the youth movement because he has hungry young players who are tired of waiting on “soft upperclassmen who feel in titled to playing time because “they have been thru the wars”. Think about it. The record for the upperclassmen is 11-32 overall and 4-22 in conference play. It seems like you have a lot of “my stat” guys and not a lot of “team” guys. What’s the point of leading the conference in tackles when the runner has already gained 10 yards. If you had a squad full of #10’s( the RB) you would see progress. That kid runs like his life depends on it and after reading about his life I see why he reacts the way he does after every play. He wants it that bad. I see him yelling at an OL if they missed a block. I have seen him basically take the job from the others. He willed that team to that touchdown. Those are the players you need.

By the way, if you did make a change, I would take a long look at these names. I would do whatever it took to get Schiano back in promising him the world, maybe AD if he decided to retire in the future or a seat on the board and you pay that guy 5 million and whatever he needed as an assistant pool budget. You have too, you’ll have the money because 50 million is your first check in 2021. I would also talk to Al Golden, Charlie Strong, Kevin Wilson, and Butch Jones.
Schiano and Wilson. Wilson isn't the guy at OSU and Schiano could give him full reign on the O. Stay here for 2-3 years to help his image and then get another HC gig,

I said similar about Strong when he got his contract extension/raise at Louisville....that you'd want to see how he did w/o Bridgewater.
BUT I'l say this for him he wisened up on his views of offense....one of the main issues/question marks I have with Schiano....has he evolved too..Ash's McNulty hire leaves me wondering.
Strong brought his prostyle OC Shawn Watson with him to Texas from Louisville and stuck with the prostyle, it didn't work then switched to a spread but kept Watson to implement it and that didn't work either and eventually he hired Sterlin Gilbert an offshoot of Briles through Babers/Montgomery...a decent spread OC with good "roots" but it was too late for him at Texas. He's brought Gilbert along with him to USF and they're doing well keeping up so far what Taggart left behind. Unfortunately for him he didn't make that decision early on at Texas but he evolved at least.
Not one of my top choices but I don't mind Strong...he'd have a good Florida recruiting connection and I'd like to think he'd keep using the spread like he is now. Can't read his mind but wonder if he's happy that he's gotten his payday from Texas and has worked in Florida for a good part of his career and is happy to stay at USF as long as they'll have him, or at least stay in state. Different point in his career as opposed to the typical up and comer job hopping.
Kinda surprised you don't like him but would take Edsall/Golden/Wanny from your post above. I'd take Strong over all of them.

Along with Florida, Texas connections couldn't hurt either.
Totally guessing, but I'd think he would want another shot to prove himself at a P5 school - failing so hard and famously at Texas as your only P5 coaching gig can't sit well with a competitive guy.
Not sure RU would really be the type of spot he'd be looking for, though. If he keeps SF humming along, he should be able to land a better gig without all the baggage. Like you said, not an up-and-comer trying to prove himself.

Bo Pelini, Jim Leavitt, Greg Schiano - you want discipline installed here with proven history of success on the field as well as recruiting, these are great options. All 3 have NFL experience to boot. On top of that Leavitt and Schiano both have built programs from the ashes.
Cale Gundy - probably no chance he'd leave the state of Oklahoma, but maybe enough money would convince him. Plenty of experience coaching explosive offenses at Oklahoma for nearly 2 decades and a tremendous recruiter.

Ash isn’t an elite DC. He made his bones co-coaching 4 and 5 stars at Ohio state for two years—players he didn’t recruit and didn’t have to develop. He’s a fraud.
