I'm all dried out and recovered from Catfish Days and that means that football season is right around the corner.

I was waiting to do this until the schedules got released and hopefully can get some interaction from the ICE/Small School guys that are still on the board. There are still some question marks with Lisle still being listed on a few teams schedules, but this is the best we got for now. I think the tiers of the ICE make for some very interesting matchups. Not so much in the sense that there will be great games between two powers, but I do think that there will be quite a few critical matchups for teams to keep their playoff hopes alive or clinch a spot. The possibility of taking a forfeit in an open week left by Lisle absolutely kills me (I know a few others don't share this believe, but to each their own). However, it is what it is, and I think that two teams could make the playoffs based on the gimme week.

Listed in alphabetical order:

Braidwood (Reed-Custer) - I personally did not think they would have fell off as bad as they did once the Dream Team left. That flash in the pan is long gone and the Comets are back to where they were in previous years. They have a new coach in town who comes from a prestigious program, but I don't think that is enough to change a culture of a town. They have a manageable out of conference slate, and taking the forfeit from the Lisle week is a smart move (as much as I hate it). El Paso and Harvard could be winnable games, but last year it didn't play out that way. Their Super Bowl this year is on the road in week 7 against Herscher. Last year was a close lose and their schedule bodes well to prepare for that game. It is sandwiched in between a tough slate, but they will know deep down that if they are 3-3 going into that game they automatically clinch with a bye week in week 9. This could all be null and void if they don't start off 3-0 which they do have the potential to do, but I do not see actually happening.

Floor - 1-8
Ceiling - 5-4
Actual Prediction - 2-7
ICE Finish - 7th

Coal City - I don't think there will be too many surprises with the Coalers. Coming off a semifinal run last year with a decent amount returning will help them secure their spot as number 2 in the ICE with ease and hopefully another deep playoff run. Pontiac and Bloom will be great tune-up weeks, Richmond Burton could pose a slight challenge, but I still like the CC to beat them fairly well. With no shocker here their Super Bowl will be week 9 at Wilmington with a possible undefeated record on the line for both teams and I will go ahead and say for sure the ICE title on the line (2004 flashback anyone).

Floor - 7-2
Ceiling - 9-0
AP - 8-1
ICE - 2nd

Herscher - With maybe the exception of Bishop Mac, Herscher beat the teams they were supposed to last year. The teams that were supposed to lose to beat them pretty well. In this regard, I still do not know what to think of their record from 2024. OOC slate is good for them. Canton will be a win. They kept Lisle for the bye week forfeit. Bishop Mac at home in week 2 will be their Super Bowl this year. It's a local rival, it should be winnable although not a promised win, and it will probably be the game that makes or breaks their playoff clinching.

Floor - 2-7
Ceiling - 5-4
AP - 4-5
ICE - 5th

Manteno - The Panthers bounced back nicely after a string of down years. I see them as usually being in the middle tier ICE, especially with the current state of the conference. They might have my favorite OOC schedule of the conference. Although Sandwich and Plano aren't the toughest opponents, Sandwich should be good enough to gauge the season. I also love seeing the old I-8 matchups linger around. Going to Gibson City in week 7 is an awesome matchup IMO. They are a tough 1A school and the game should not be overlooked. Their Super Bowl will be week 8 at Peotone. The R50 Rumble is always fun and it probably bears the most weight on the playoff seeding for both teams.

Floor - 4-5
Ceiling - 7-2
AP - 7-2
ICE - 3rd

Peotone - I am going to nickname the Tone, Middle of the Pack Peotone. The are always right there with playoff berths, but can never seem to make the jump to the top of the conference. OOC provides 2 wins. Although Granite City is much larger, they are really bad. Marengo is more of a 50/50 game, but I think the Blue Devils should beat them fairly easily. I am a little disappointed that the Tone kept Lisle, although that could not have been entirely their choice. I think their Super Bowl will be at home in week 8 for the R50 Rumble. If not for bragging rights, as I just stated above, the winner of this game will have an extra win for their playoff seeding.

Floor - 5-4
Ceiling - 7-2
AP - 6-3
ICE - 4th

Streator - I am waiting for the year that the Bulldogs break through an actually contend in the ICE. Props to them for scheduling Dixon in place of Lisle, but that could be the decision that keeps them from the playoffs. Their other two OOC games are both toss ups IMO. Eisenhower is not a good team, but they do play in a pretty solid conference so their horrible record yearly may be an illusion. Ottawa is not good either, but they have Streator's number. The Streator at Ottawa game in week 2 is the Super Bowl. Just due to bragging rights an proximity. I don't see Streator having any chance of making the playoffs.

Floor - 0-9
Ceiling - 4-5
AP - 2-7
ICE - 6th

Wilmington - Wildcats are king of the conference MOST years, and I think this year will be the same. OOC schedule is awesome. Would have loved to see a different pickup than Thornton, but I get why that may not have been possible. The Morris matchup at Morris in Week 1 is long overdue. Morris doesn't have much to gain from this, but Wilmington has everything to gain. Being on the road hurts Wilmo here, but I don't think it's a boat race. The I-8 Sandwich revival is fun too. Super Bowl will be Week 9 at home with the Coalers. Should be electric.

Floor - 7-2
Ceiling - 9-0
AP - 8-1
ICE - 1st

I see 4 teams (CC, Teno, Tone, Wilmo) all as locks for playoffs. I could see RC or Herscher somehow squeaking in if all things go their way in the OOC games, they each have beaten Streator, and they are 3-4 and 4-3 when they play each other. That could be the most fun game of the season, and could be a game I go to just to watch two random teams. I do not think that will be the case, but it is possible.

Any thoughts on the future of the conference? I believe someone mentioned on the old board that Braidwood wanted out and that was news to me. I personally never heard that. Will Lisle bounce back? What can the schools do to ensure a competitive conference. I personally think the travel for a few outlier schools (Lisle, Streator) is a bit much. Maybe not for football on a Friday, but those Tuesday night basketball games have to be brutal. Is it feasible to create a football only conference? The problem with that I believe would be finding other same size schools willing to part with their current conferences but wish to remain in their conference for all other sports. I'm just looking for thoughts.

That's the way I see it. Discuss it, debate it, call me an idiot, but we are getting close and I'm starting to get the itch.

I think both CC and Wilmo have some interesting non conference games that should provide the only excitement on their schedules until week 9.

RB should be a great matchup for CC and then both CC and Wilmo will play some bigger schools. Both schools will likely have more talent on the field than their opponents but the deciding factor will be size.

Wilmo will have the talent advantage against Thorton and they didn't win a game last year but they are still a 6A school and if they have some big boys on the lines it may make it difficult for the Wildcats to run their offense. Same goes for CC against Bloom.

Wilmo/Morris should be an interesting game. The talent level should be about the same with wilmo having the coaching edge. It will come down to line play on both sides for both teams. If Morris has a big defensive line and can penetrate it could make for a long night for the Wildcats.

Massey has Morris 39-14. Probably fairly accurate. I will say I would be surprised to see Wilmington hold Morris under 40 points. I see the first half staying competitive and Morris pulling away in the second half. Morris is bringing a lot back on both sides of the ball from a semi-final team. Wilmington will win their next 8 and be just fine come playoff time.

This was week 1 and 2 for Wilmington in 2019.
What does that have to do with this year. Wilmington can absolutely compete with anyone on their schedule and will be favored in every game except for Morris, but all I was saying is that if one of Thornton has some big DL then it could cause some issues.

Re: Coal City-Bloom Township, don’t completely sleep on the Blazing Trojans. They went 3-5 last year, with a bad loss to Thornwood and a reasonable loss to a decent Rich Township squad. Otherwise, their losses were to the juggernauts in conference (Crete-Monee and Kankakee) and a playoff-bound Argo. A reasonably talented team that may not have to play people both ways? I still think of CC as the favorite but I wouldn’t guarantee that.

This might be CC’s year to win the league, although it looks like Wilmo gets the home field advantage in week 9, according to IHSA.org. Kinda weird that they playing in Wilmo back to back years…
Wilmo/CC at the top.
Tone and Manteno qualify.
Herscher, R-C and Streator at the bottom.

I hope I’m wrong, but I think Morris will be just too much for Wilmington to handle. Too big, too much depth and experience. Morris returns the bulk of their team from last year. There have definitely been past years where I think Wilmo could pull it off, but I’d be very surprised if it happened this year.

I'm with you on the Morris analysis. It's not impossible and maybe even slightly probable but I think they have an advantage. I think there were a few years Wilmo could have beat them.

Wilmington 8-1
Coal City 8-1, maybe 7-2 (Richmond Burton game)
Peotone 7-2
Herscher 5-4
Manteno 4-5
Lisle 3-6
Streator 1-8

Few comments on some of the posts. CC is gonna roll Bloom. Won’t be close

Manteno lost a ton from last year. The Lisle gimme win is out the window by picking up Gibson City. Could cost them a playoff spot.

I still think it’s foolish for Streator to play Dixon but maybe they prove me wrong.

I know Peotone has reached out to a few teams and have gotten turned away. They are taking the forfeit as of now but no other choice.

I’m intrigued by RC’s hire. LWE guy. I don’t think RC is a sleeping giant by any means but I always felt like they could be what Peotone is. Solid, in the playoffs each year. Idk, we’ll see.

I see 3 playoff teams. CC, Wilmington, Peotone and I think Herscher can sneak in but I don’t completely trust them.

Also someone mentioned something about the conference. The divide is becoming greater enrollment wise with these schools. And now w the Lisle situation, I think you could see a scenario where this conference dissolves in the next few years. Hopefully I’m wrong.

Agreed I've never been impressed with the South Suburban schools that pop up on the radar for ICE schools. I don't see this one being close.

I still think Manteno qualifies. I think they have enough to get 5. RC, Herscher, Streator, Plano......Sandwich or Peotone could be winnable

I still think it’s foolish for Streator to play Dixon but maybe they prove me wrong.

Kinda, but it won't be the sole game that kept them out of the playoffs so good on them for at least letting the kids get to experience FNL one more time this year.

I know Peotone has reached out to a few teams and have gotten turned away. They are taking the forfeit as of now but no other choice.

I assumed that was the case, but again it won't be the sole game that keeps them out of or gets them into the playoffs. I'd like to see them get one more game to sharpen up before playoffs though.

I’m intrigued by RC’s hire. LWE guy. I don’t think RC is a sleeping giant by any means but I always felt like they could be what Peotone is. Solid, in the playoffs each year. Idk, we’ll see.

We will see if he can get them there. He may not be familiar with the culture at RC. We would think they could be on the bubble of playoff contention yearly, but something aint clicking over there.

I see 3 playoff teams. CC, Wilmington, Peotone and I think Herscher can sneak in but I don’t completely trust them.

I think Manteno has a better shot than Herscher. I also don't see any other teams beside the ones listed as having any chance.

Also someone mentioned something about the conference. The divide is becoming greater enrollment wise with these schools. And now w the Lisle situation, I think you could see a scenario where this conference dissolves in the next few years. Hopefully I’m wrong.

I hope not too, but only time will tell.

Regarding enrollment, just at a glance, CC seems to be the only ICE school that is growing, especially when looking over the past decade or so.

I was pretty surprised to see R-C the smallest now - under 400.

Seeing the schools with close to or over 100 students lost is absolutely wild to me.

I actually figured CC would be more of a gain but maybe Diamond and all that grew up a little before 2016. It all kind of blends together. It also seems like a lot of couples I went to school with are leaving or have left Wilmo for CC.

It also appears as though the enrollment gap isn't getting larger. If everyone is losing it just means that they are all staying even keel.

I can assure you that RB will be much more than "a slight challenge" to Coal City. The offense is going to be really good this year led by an all-state caliber tailback that had 1,000yds and 20TDs last year as a sophomore. They started a majority of sophomores and juniors last year so they have A LOT coming back. The two programs haven't played each other since the 2019 semifinals @CC where RB beat the brakes off them 30-0 in route to a state title. RB has been slightly down the last two years although they've also gotten really bad draws in the 4A playoff field (St Viator 23' and St Laurence in 24'). I'm looking forward to going to this one in week 2 and expect a very competitive game. RB over CC, 31-21

RB will likely be 3A this year. Their enrollment has gone down slightly over the last couple years. With the new way the enrollments are calculated (previous year), they could end up on the bubble but I expect them to be in 3A for the 2025 playoffs.

The 2025 ICE is its usual, predictable, boring self. It's CC v Wilmington for the title and the rest of the conference beating up on each other for the scraps. Peotone and maybe Manteno make the playoffs, but both get bounced round one. The Coalers and the Cats helped their playoff cause by beefing up their non conference schedules. Good to see (y)

I agree 100%. CC at Wilmo is really the only game I plan on attending this year until playoffs. Maybe I will go against Thornton just to see how they are since it's a new opponent. Unfortunately I have a prior commitment for week 1 against Morris

Tone or Teno could possibly sneak into the second round if they draw a first round CPS.

RB has been slightly down the last two years although they've also gotten really bad draws in the 4A playoff field (St Viator 23' and St Laurence in 24'). I'm looking forward to going to this one in week 2 and expect a very competitive game. RB over CC, 31-21
Could be accurate. I know they are tough.

Tone or Teno could possibly sneak into the second round if they draw a first round CPS.
True. You never know when an ICE Tier 2 might draw a Chicago Vocational or Ag Science.

I don't think you'll miss much week one. The skinny on the 2025 Skins is they are loaded. Reents will have his kids ready to play.

I agree 100%. CC at Wilmo is really the only game I plan on attending this year until playoffs. Maybe I will go against Thornton just to see how they are since it's a new opponent. Unfortunately I have a prior commitment for week 1 against Morris

Unless the prior commitment is your own wedding or the birth of your child, I'd skip that one for the Morris game. It's very enlightening watching your team play a perennial powerhouse and exposing all that you thought was right with your team. Whether you upset them or get clobbered, it's definitely a great way to see the reality of what will happen during the season and playoffs.

I’m definitely planning on attending the Morris/Wilmo game, but it’s probably a 20ish minute walk for me

Be careful, you'll have to walk home through the rough streets of Morris in the dark.
Haven’t been to a game in a while… can I access from Park Blvd or do I have to go from main entrance on Union?

Be a real shame if you came down with something that Friday morning and couldn't make your previous engagement...
