State run job would be outsourced to a private company, any reason why a company needs to shut down for election day ? I mean it takes 5 min tops & can vote many days including weekends in advance, & the polls stay open late , they only work 8 hrs ...please someone explain this to me ....

Looks like I overshot that estimate...

Prior to 1990, liquor was sold only in a state owned system of stores, known as ABC Stores. In that year, the state withdrew from the retail liquor business and auctioned off permits to private businesses, who operate as "agents of the state". In smaller counties, a local monopoly was provided for, with only one agent per area, but in larger counties, multiple competing agencies were granted. Agencies are rebid every 10 years. In the 2010 rebid, the following agencies were granted:

Rite-Aid drug store chain, 42 agencies

CVS drug store chain, 9 agencies

Seven-Eleven convenience store chain, 20 agencies

Sam's Club warehouse store chain, 2 agencies

Kroger grocery store chain, 1 agency

privately owned convenience stores, 31 agencies

privately owned alcohol and tobacco shops, 14 agencies

privately owned grocery stores, 7 agencies

privately owned souvenir shop, 1 agency

privately owned stand-alone liquor only stores, 40 agencies

Closer to 30%
I don't post much, but, this is a real pet peeve of mine. If I think that I can make a profit selling liquor in my town, I should be able to open a store. Just pass a background, get a state liscense, get approval from the city and county and start selling liquor.

Can't believe that there are only 147 "liquor" stores in the entire state. I bet there are more than that in Washington County, MD alone. There is a damn liquor store on every corner, and, I bet they all make money.

The state should also not be able to tell me when I want to buy a bottle. I guess I can understand no sales 2AM-7AM, but, if I want a bottle of bourbon on Sunday or a holiday, I should be able to buy it. ---END RANT---

You live in that part of town? Grew up first part of life close to City Park and then North Hills. So, I know this area well. You could have said north of Rosemar Road as I was confused with the drug store by the NET and assumed wrong. Isn't that a Rite Aid?
Its cvs across from rosemar , you will like it im sure

Growing up in WV, and beginning to drink George Dickel in the late 70's, I can clearly recall the mad dashes to the local ABC store. Seems like they used to close at 7 on the dot. I also think my dad knew where every ABC store was located in every town/city throughout WV.

I have no problem having schools closed for election day. Nor do I have a problem with any organization closing for election day.

For many locales, unfortunately it takes longer than 5 minutes to vote. I spent over an hour this morning. My wife and son both spent over two hours to vote during Early Voting.

Aren't many schools used as polling places?

Depends as I understand it. In my area, they took voter polling out of the schools about 20 years ago.

Still use a lot of schools in our area. My old polling place is an Elementary school, new one is a Church.
