State run job would be outsourced to a private company, any reason why a company needs to shut down for election day ? I mean it takes 5 min tops & can vote many days including weekends in advance, & the polls stay open late , they only work 8 hrs ...please someone explain this to me ....

Either the WV constitution or legislature. I don't think blaming the employees is the right place to start.

I dont blame the employees for taking advantage of it , i would & would drink all day in celebration of my paid day off ...the only good things open are bars . Just dont think schools or anything else needs to be closed on this day , could understand in the past when traveling was a hardship.

I have no problem having schools closed for election day. Nor do I have a problem with any organization closing for election day.

For many locales, unfortunately it takes longer than 5 minutes to vote. I spent over an hour this morning. My wife and son both spent over two hours to vote during Early Voting.

I think schools are closed because so many are used as polling places.

Coop gave one reason. Another is a negotiated benefit between the teachers and local/state authority so teachers can have a better opportunity to vote. Now, anti-union people have issues with that reason but in many instances, it is a great help for the teachers.

I just find your beef as a "get off my lawn " argument and energy should be used on bigger issues.

Like the fact I can't buy liquor on Sunday or Christmas. Out f'n rageous, imo.
We had on our ballot Sunday Brunch liquor sales which allows restaurants in my county to sell alcohol starting at 11:30. I have no clue if it will pass or not. But there are a ton of people on both sides with strong opinions.

We passed the Brunch Bill back in 2016, but I was mostly referring to me going down to CVS and picking up a bottle.

Live here, you can’t buy beer in a gas station. WTF is up that?!!!

Did they change the law in WV to zero alcohol on Sunday before noon?

Not a get off my lawn ....i get the negotiations, think i would barter for something better & i would not make it a voting platform, i think most holidays should fall on a weekend, including Christmas & well most

Retail sale of beer and wine is prohibited on Sundays between 2:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and between 2:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. on weekdays and Saturdays. Retail sale of liquor is prohibited on Sundays, Christmas Day, and between 12:00 midnight and 8:00 a.m on all other days.

Ok and interesting. My company observes Vet Day as a paid holiday. I would assume you have a problem with that as next Monday, government, banks, many schools, and some private companies get the day off. Why would that bother you if you care to answer? Personally, I won't criticize one way or the other but I personally can't understand the perspective you are sharing.

I know. But you buy your liquor at the CVS?
lol. Slim pickens around here. Sadly, it's the best selection without going to Charleston and overpaying. Honestly, I'd estimate drug stores hold 40-50% of the liquor licenses in WV.

In stores it's still beer & wine after 1, no liquor. Bars, clubs, restaurants are decided on a local level (eg: Brunch Bills).

Vet day is one of 3 that i support the whole country taking off ....the other 2 is labor day & the 4th ....might go for Thanksgiving.
I repect your company for that ...vets should get it & we should take the day to pay our respect to them

Looks like I overshot that estimate...

Prior to 1990, liquor was sold only in a state owned system of stores, known as ABC Stores. In that year, the state withdrew from the retail liquor business and auctioned off permits to private businesses, who operate as "agents of the state". In smaller counties, a local monopoly was provided for, with only one agent per area, but in larger counties, multiple competing agencies were granted. Agencies are rebid every 10 years. In the 2010 rebid, the following agencies were granted:

Rite-Aid drug store chain, 42 agencies

CVS drug store chain, 9 agencies

Seven-Eleven convenience store chain, 20 agencies

Sam's Club warehouse store chain, 2 agencies

Kroger grocery store chain, 1 agency

privately owned convenience stores, 31 agencies

privately owned alcohol and tobacco shops, 14 agencies

privately owned grocery stores, 7 agencies

privately owned souvenir shop, 1 agency

privately owned stand-alone liquor only stores, 40 agencies

Closer to 30%

If you're ever near the Huntington Mall (in Barboursville), stop and check out the King Cut Rate Tobacco and Liquor. Good selection and decent prices.

Close enough but thanks for the info. When I'm home in Pburg visiting twice a year, I have never thought to look in a drug store for liquor. Hell, on the north side of town, it seems North End Market has all the business anyway. What a gold mine that hole in a wall joint is.

You live in that part of town? Grew up first part of life close to City Park and then North Hills. So, I know this area well. You could have said north of Rosemar Road as I was confused with the drug store by the NET and assumed wrong. Isn't that a Rite Aid?
