no I just have common sense and can distinguish between a step up and, well, not so much.
Hell he well may turn Kentucky down because they are such a half assed program today. He probably is thinking he is miles ahead of Kentucky today,,,,,and he is.

Auburn is 2-4 in the SEC I think 8-4 on the year

Really impressive

I believe Oats has only been a head coach for about 5 seasons. And that is at small no name schools.

Cal has 1 title in 12 years at UK with hundreds of NBA draft picks.

At this point, Oats looks like a more competent coach.
I'm not happy with Cal right now either but your statement is really dumb. The guy has done nothing. Cal has been to multiple final fours. Let's not get stupid.

I’d like to see mark pope at uk someday if he continues to show out at byu. in only his second year there he’s shown that his team can compete with the zags. i watched a few of his games last year. he looks very confident as a head coach. in second place this year in the wcc at 11-3.

Won three straight since Cooper became eligible and also Ky boy Justin Powell. Who is averaging 11 pts a game has been out last several games due to concussion so they seem to be getting it together and lost to Alabama 94-90.

I thought 2 straight they lost to Bama. No offense but winning 3 straight isn’t a great accomplishment. Pearl has had the one pretty good team in his tenure IMO, which was the team who beat us in the EE. People sometimes forget we had already beaten them I think twice that season one of the wins an absolute beat down at Rupp.

Yeah they won when it mattered that year no question and I give them credit for that, but it was also Pearls first career FF what does he have 2 EE in his illustrious career?

Oh failed to mention this great Auburn team whose 2-4 in the Sec and really coming together at the right time is also without question not dancing this year bc they self imposed a post season ban in advance of their looming probation for CHEATING.

So, pardon me if I don’t jump on the Pearl train as a small select few here have done the past couple years. UK would have zero interest IMO.

Anyone who watched that game yesterday and came away with the thought they want Pearl I’m not sure what to say. Auburn looked slightly less terrible than UK which is Really saying something.

Nate Oates is what modern basketball looks like. It’s the reason he cleared his bench to show mercy on Kentucky. Total humiliation for a Kentucky home game. Truthfully Oates reminds me of what we did in the 90’s. Tremendous spacing, great 3 point shooters, and a full-court press. I bet he would be a great recruiter at UK with built in advantages
So you're saying modern basketball is what UK was playing in the 1990s? Look, I'm not really trying to get your goat, here, more looking to point out that Calipari's issues aren't so much failing to react to changes in the game - failing to keep up with what's modern, in other words - so much as that Cal really isn't a very good bench coach and maybe not a good developer of talent. The latter is hard to judge of someone who lives and dies in the OAD mold. A terrific recruiter, yes, and at least in the past, either an outstanding evaluator of high school talent or just incredibly lucky. But if the talent isn't there or isn't what was expected, he's not going to win big coaching up players with less than stellar skills.

Kentucky's future success with Calipari will rise and fall with his future recruiting success. That's the primary skill he has, what all UK fans are going to have to depend on. He's not suddenly going to become a great game day coach at this point.

I think Oates would actually do well here
He may have zero interest in being here. Just because there are coaches out there right now we would consider being the next UK coach does not mean they would ever entertain the idea of taking the job.

I don't see the point of jumping on the bandwagon of a coach that has a good season.

Bama has at least 8 Seniors, Juniors or Graduate players on the team so he walked into a team that was situated to be on a good run at some point. He has the benefit of a veteran PG that is a good team leader.

I'm not saying Oates isn't a good coach, but the jury is still out.

I don’t think Cal is going anywhere but if he decided to take an NBA job I am certain Barnhart would take a run at Billy Donovan. His current salary is 35% less than Cal so the money is there. If not available then then Ohio st basketball coach Chris Holtman now making 3 million a year is a home grown option. Obviously Beard and Oats and Drew would be considered as well and the three of them together do not make what Cal makes. Anyone of them would jump at this job and all seem to be good X and O coaches. The Kentucky name is still on the uniform and recruiting will be fine

can you imagine a Senior Petty on this UK team. I recognize we would have had the same growing pains with him as Askew in his freshmen and sophomore years, but just 1 guy with the rest of the team and I don't think we'd have more than 2 losses - and I'd bet good money he'd make every player on the team look better. Hell, he might have been able to salvage Boston's season.

No AD in this country would fire a hall of fame coach, that average over 30 wins a year, that has been to 4 final 4's, 6 elite 8's, 2 national championships, and won 1 title all in 11 years for one poor season during a pandemic. It would be a PR nightmare. I still say if that would happen, no coach would take this job with the worry of all it would take is one poor season to get fired.

Easy now. Common sense isn’t allowed here

I agree. Cal will have to leave on his own accord. He simply makes too much. I just saw that Brad Stevens makes only a third of what Cal makes. Mike D’Antoni makes less than half of what Cal makes. Dwayne Casey makes 35% less than Cal. Frank Vogel less than Casey. Same for Jason Kidd. In other words plenty of NBA options at some point in time. Currently only Doc Rivers, Tom Thibodeaux and Frank Popovich make as much as Cal. Of course the only college coach making more than half of what Cal makes is Coach K

If Will Wade hadn’t screwed up recruiting at LSU, he could have been great. Plays a great style, passionate, young and hungry. No one would touch him with a ten foot pole now.
