But why is Deshaun Watson considered elite?

A big part of it is that he spent his entire career up to this point throwing to DeAndre Hopkins.

To be fair, he is still a great QB....Texans just lost so much from their offense last season, plus have a hobbled Brandin Cooks out there. That plus no preseason and shortened offseason plus playing on the road against the defending SB champs is just a really bad combination.

I just don’t see giving him all that money with his injury history. And he’s not a “big” or well built man. I’ll tell you who he reminds me of body wise (sans the injuries), that’s Dee Bost. That build works on the hardwood. Not so sure on the gridiron. He was as good of a college QB as I’ve ever seen but somewhere in 6-9th range is about as high as I can see him in the current NFL QB landscape.

6th to 9th in the NFL can win championships but not with Bill O Brien as your head coach.

No doubt, but one of the most important abilities is availability. I just don’t trust that part of him for that $$

Meh...he had one major injury his rookie year in a non-contact drill in practice. That can happen to anybody. He’s been perfectly durable besides that both in college and in the NFL. I wouldn’t really say he’s any more at risk than any other dual threat QB.

Because he was a first round draft pick from a high profile college. That’s it.

I’m really starting to believe that 95% of the difference is the team they play for. I mean... if Dak had signed a $40m/yr contract last week and put up an 84 passer rating in week 1 while losing by 2 TDs, what conversation would people be having this morning?

They are virtually the same QB with the exception of Dak being a hair better in a couple areas, and the only major difference is the fact that Dak is the Cowboys’ QB

This.

And they obviously think he's plenty durable since they wont add any OL to protect their investment....

I actually think Dak is a little better of pocket awareness and quicker decision making. Deshaun is a much better athlete and can definitely be a magician in eluding the rush, but he leans on that a bit too much. Dak usually makes much quicker reads on when to take off, and processes his reads better, which makes him a more efficient runner and thrower in general, even though he doesn’t have quite the same agility and quickness as Watson. I’d compare Watson more to Lamar Jackson, whereas Dak is more of a Russell Wilson type.

Ummmm didn’t they trade for Tunsil less than a year ago and make him the highest paid LT?

He tore his other ACL at Clemson. He’s had a broken collar bone, broke a bone in his hand, LCL problems, lower back problems, broken ribs and a collapsed lung. And he’s only 25. Now a lot of those injuries are just part of football but there is definitely a trend there that most QB’s don’t have, at least not by 25. And now they’re asking THAT OL to protect a $40M/per investment

Fair points. But he did actually play through all those injuries except the broken hand in his freshmen year at Clemson, which caused him to miss 3 games. Definitely can’t question his toughness. I would contend that his playing style more than his body type allows for that type of injury history though. If he can start getting rid of the ball quicker, a lot of that will be taken care of. He has basically the same frame as Lamar Jackson, who doesn’t have nearly the injury history because he doesn’t hang out in the pocket for days.

I also don’t fault the Texans for the investment as they had to make to correct business decision. Nobody doubts that Watson is a franchise QB, so they went ahead and paid him now while they can still get a bargain. And yes, it is absolutely a huge bargain to get him for an average of about $31 million per year over the next 6 years. You are going to be dumbfounded by what Dak ends up getting if you think that 4-year / $160 million is a huge investment.

No doubt, I don’t think anyone can question his toughness. And on his playing style, while not ideal for the long term health of a QB or a franchise, when you have a GM/coach/play caller as limited as O’Brein is they almost hafta have a QB that plays that way that can keep plays alive and get himself out of trouble. Which in turn opens that QB up to way to many unnecessary hits. Kinda of a catch 22.

I’m not a Dak homer, obviously, haha. But I am a Dak fan and I think he’s a very good NFL QB and even better human being. I’d want him leading any organization I was a part of.

But, I think Deshaun is a better QB. His arm talent is higher and he’s a higher level athlete. That’s not diminishing Dak, it’s just Deshaun is elite. He’s played with a substantially worse OL in his career, compared to Dak. Has had average RBs behind him, and WR Corp has been about the same. Yes he’s had Hopkins, who’s elite. But the cowboys 2-4 WRs have been better. I don’t think either have been well coached. Hopefully that changes for Dak with McCarthy.
