a college athletics class I took at MSU that no college programs really make money off of baseball.

You make alot off football and then some do off basketball, but thats about it.

Think about it, how far does 7 dollar bleacher seats, free student admission, consessions sales, and 5,000 season tickets really go? Not very far.

Private donations pays the bills in our baseball program, not ticket sales. I would imagin thats what your friend is talking about.

lets put some real numbers to it:

Tickets sales- we bring in at least 1.5 million from ticket sales alone.
concessions- over all the home dates, no way we make less than 200K, i'm guessing its more

So we are looking at bringing in at least 1.7 million through those 2 avenues before we talk skyboxes, outfield fees, and advertising done at games. We also sell MSU merchandise at games that i'm also sure brings home profit as well.

Uniforms? Dont we have a contract with Russell now to where they provide us with gear? Bat contract? Its rare a major college program doesnt have some type of deal on that as well.</p>

When its all said and done, if we are a half mil in the hole in baseball, somebody is stealing.

which funnels money straight to the baseball program and has provided for a litany of things. Additionally, the number of season tickets we sell in baseball is not far less than the number we sell in basketball.

If we aren't making money, then that's directly contrary to the message our athl dept has been sending.

Regardless, Polk makes what Cohen makes and that's mainly b/c we didn't even have to try to offer more. I feel sure we could. Hell, I'd join the dugout club 5 times if it helped get us a good coach.

pretty easily. its a learning envioronment. the costs for turf management as well as the PGM add up.

throw in the fact that it is dirt cheap to play and has a very small population to draw off of, adding in the fact that there are a couple other courses within 10 minutes...it adds up to a loss.

it has lost money every year since at least 1991. or i should say that it has not generated a profit on its own since then. you have to also factor in the government grants for testing that goes on each winter there. its a total cluster17 to figure out. but like i said, its a learning course. </p>

is taken care of by turf management students. We also don't buy new equipment every year, so we get a financial break there as well.

I'm going to add this thought- Whether or not the baseball team makes a profit or not, we could make a lot more money by doing some very simple things like promote the games through advertising, giving away things, promoting the Dugout Club, and having better concessions at the games.

6,000 season tickets at $140 each would be $840,000, and if we average 1,000 $7 tickets for 30 home games, that would be another $210,000 for a total of about $1,000,000. I doubt we're making a huge amount of money on baseball, but I don't see how we could be running a deficit either.

I looked at the MSU website and saw that season tickets were $140. But that's probably bleacher season tickets. Grandstand is probably higher but just isn't shown on the website because there aren't any available to the general public.

Plus I would imagin travel expenses are baseball are pretty high. You have to rent hotel rooms and feed 25-30 people for 3 days. I know they dont fly everywhere they go, but still. There are plans next year for them to do a tournament in Hawaii I believe.

Also, baseball doesn't get revenue from TV deals really. We only have a couple games shown a year.

I dont know if MSU's baseball program was in the red or black last year, but I do know that the overwhelming majority of baseball programs in the country cost more money than they pull in.

For one, they clearly don't include private donations or funding from the foundations, some of which are often earmarked for specific programs.

Per the 2008 University Bound Budget (pages 1186-1187) Revenues generated by the MSU Golf Course is $656,427, Total Expenditures is $756,427. A bump of $100,000 from "within transfer funds" is budgeted to get Revenues to $756,427.

But proper presentation would dictate that all the revenue and expenses be shown. Clearly there isn't enough revenue shown in "other" to include baseball unless there is a bunch of netting. Point is, those figures are useless.
