I like the kid, he seems like a GREAT young man, but he makes me nervous when we've established a lead and I see him coming in. He has had a few decent plays this year, especially defensively. He's young, so I get that, but when I see guys like Markkanen, the Plumlee septuplets, Tyler Hansbrough & Zeller . . .all these players have/had one obvious thing in common . . . they all contributed meaningfully to their teams. Were they developed to be contributors, was it innate, and how can UK get Humphries to be like them, or at least a little more similar?

I do hate the fact that because hump is white we must compare/contrast him with other white guys, that he doesn't belong in the same breath as. He's not good this year and all I expect him to do is attack the boards.

He's still going to be a good college player. He has to improve in foot work and get in better rebounding position. He'll make a good play but then make 2 bad ones. He has to be consistent on both ends of the floor.
Yeah. My wife calls him "The Lead Eraser". She always says "please don't erase what we've established!" I used to laugh at such nonsense. Now . . . not so much.

If Ulis had stayed stayed another year, Humphries would be an AA candidate. Ulis knew how to make Humphries go. Maybe it was the state of things, but Ulis made Humphries part of the game and gave him the opportunity to shine. Ulis encouraged him when things went wrong.

A good game to rewatch

He's the 9th man and a backup center. Generally, those guys aren't perfect players. The issue is when the lack of discipline (fouls from Bam and/or Gabriel) or rebounding from other spots force him to get a lot of minutes. Humphries is great playing 8-10 minutes a game...which is typical for a 9th man.

Humphries foot speed and lateral movement is way less than Blond headed Plumlee, Cody Zeller, etc.. Hump simply can't explode or react. He's a long kid...but he's still a moment slower on the floor even with his weight loss.

Actually, he's a tough kid, rebounds pretty well and is not afraid to work. He's barely 19 years old and 10,000 miles or so from home. There have been times I've been damn glad to have him when Bam gets into trouble. I look forward to watching him play 2 more years. Hopefully he'll show more loyalty to KY than some of our 'fans' have shown him.

I'm pretty sure if somebody trashed your sons as badly as has been done here, there would be threats and violence. Have a little respect. Try not to eat your young.

I'm definitely not on the Hump bandwagon. I think he is awful and contributes nothing other than giving Bam a little break.

Doesn't rebound, doesn't play defense, nonoffensive game other than a decent short range hook.

Maybe next year or the year after it will come together but the fact he plays over SKJ show just how dreadful SKJ must be.

kybass, classy and beautiful post. Let's give him two more years and see how he turns out. He has shown a lot of class in the way he represents UK.

The most important thing Hump needs to get better is just more time on the floor and that probably ain't happening with the way Cal recruits.

I can see Hump filling a role like Jorts did his SR year. Kanter was supposed to be our star center and Vargas was a quick backup plan. Enis never played and Vargas probably never should have but Josh ended up starting and became a vital contributor on a FF team and made it a couple of seasons in the NBA. Nobody expected that, NOBODY!

If a major opportunity presents itself to Hump his JR or SR year I think he'd surprise all of us.

People complain about players being one and done and then complain about them if they stay. Hump was recruited to be a multiple year guy, so don't expect him to have the talent of a OAD recruit.

No problem with Humphries. He'll be fine. Actually my biggest pet peeve regarding Cal is his refusal to develop a bench. I think wynyard and jones should have been given time earlier in the season against the cupcakes as well. Maybe if the regular rotation actually feared being pulled they wouldn't make so many careless mistakes, bad shots, and non- defense. Our bench got outscored by UT's bench last night something like 38-4. For the greatest recruiter in the history of the game that's flat inexcusable.

We all want him to do well. But, when people say it is there, just needs to be brought out; well based upon what? One half-way decent game a year ago, one or two good plays? We have seen no-name centers or marginal teams play better. How anyone can say he isn't disappointing so far is beyond me. We read all the typical summer hype how he has developed, he is much quicker, tearing it up in practice, etc. I have to admit I have never learned even after Carter now is can't miss posts from a few years ago. I can't blame Cal for trying to motivate and encourage but Wynyard for me seemed like a better substitute consideration as we didn't need as big and slow a player as Hump to come in as Tenn was not a big team. And, SKJ must be beyond awful that he can't steal a few minutes. SKJ needs some minutes or otherwise the first big game Bam gets in foul trouble exactly what will be our answer?

I guess it all depends on what your definition of good college player is.
