I have a feeling the world has lost its ELFING mind.
I used to think that too, but it turns out that this is twice as communicable as the flu, and the fatality rate is 10 times the flu. If it spread like it's doing in Italy, look for tens of thousands of deaths if not hundreds of thousands.
They DON'T KNOW the fatality rate because-
¹ They only started testing for this in the last 4 months.
² They don't know how long it's been out there.
³ They don't know how many people had it and didn't have symptoms,
⁴ had very minor symptoms so they didn't need care,
⁵ had worse but still manageable symptoms and thought they had the flu or a cold (a coronavirus itself)
The fact is that the flu has been worse this year than in past years because of a pretty useless vaccine (confessed that they guessed wrong on the strains, too), less sunlight and more rain, snow, clouds, so there are a lot of people with weaker immune systems.
There are a lot of reasons and possible reasons our immunity has decreased recently that could make us more susceptible to any viruses.
Another fact for you-
The perceived and reported fatality rate will INCREASE because they ARE TELLING people not to get tested if their symptoms aren't really severe. So those with the virus that aren't severe will not be tested and included in the data.
I hope everyone survives this and the short term economic burden they're causing to try to limit the negative effects of this virus they just became aware of. Martial law is the next step, then suspending elections... you heard it here first (unless you've heard it elsewhere many times before this).

I wouldn't say the flu is worse. We will never know the true numbers in China, or Iran for that matter. The fact people on Wechat were posting numbers of people infected that weren't anywhere close to what the government said is a sign. The government shut it down when it became obvious the numbers were way off and reporters started disappearing. Then you had news agencies reporting and suggesting it was the government's fault inside China. That's a big deal for people to openly start blaming the government inside of China. You had reporters in Hong Kong saying crematories were running nonstop for over a month in China near Wuhan.
Insterestingly today I overheard the average age of people that have passed from it is 80 years old. I'd be interested to know how many of them also had emphasima, asthma etc that compounded it but again in 3rd world countries we will never know that detail either. The death rate also wont reflect all the deaths that are a direct result of overwhelmed health care facilities or med shortages. No way is the common yearly flu worse than this imo. They dont call the flu a pandemic or refer to it as a possible disease X.

If you're responding to my post, I was speaking relative to past years. Flu A and B have been very bad this past year. I know of someone that tests people for that full time, and they said it's one of the worst they've seen and only recently peaked in terms of positive tests. I'm notnspeaking of fatalities or severity of the actual flu, just the numbers of positive tests being seen.
This year's flu vaccine is 45% effective............better than most seasons.......I worry about my wife....she's a respiratory therapist.........we have already planned for quarantine.......they keep on using that word......."elderly" when they talk about this Covid19..........
A girl on my daughter's cheer team got the flu (she wasn't immunized because of an allergy issue). My daughter (who got the flu shot ) was sick (not nearly as bad as the flu sick girl) around that time but tested negative for the flu. So I have to say it worked well for us. I've also never been sick with the flu in the past 20 years or so that I've been getting them.
Don't worry....as another poster noted, Kansas will hoist a banner as they're ranked #1!
45% is horsepies. The shot is no better than 25% effective in good years, if that. Were 45% of the shots eventually the right strain? Yes. It took them halfway through the season to re-issue better targeted shots. All but 1 of the people I know that received the shot got the flu this year in varying severities, including a whole dept of a hospital.
The people working to help like your wife are needing our help and prayers the most.
I'm glad they're working for you and yours, and the one person I know that they seem to work for. I know quite a few people that didn't get the flu shot(s) and didn't get the flu the past 3-4 years even when surrounded by it. Nothing is guaranteed, that's for sure.
I definitely won't stop getting them. Back when I didn't get them and was much healthier, I got a horrible case of the flu and thought I was going to die. Had a fever around 103, coughed so much everything hurt from my head down to my stomach, and couldn't eat anything or sleep for like 3 days. That was back in the late 90's and nothing worse than being up all night with only infomercials to keep you entertained. A lot more options these days. Still would prefer to not ever go through that again .
Always get the flu shot. It's not perfect and some years the prevalent strains are guessed better than others, but "25%" or "45%" effective is better than 0% effective, which is what you get when you don't get the shot. And that very well could be the difference in mild to moderate illness vs death if you're a senior citizen (or your elderly parent/grandparent is who could catch it from you). Plus, studies have shown that even when people get the flu after receiving the shot, it's typically a much milder illness than if they haven't.

I normally get the shot......just never got around to it this year.........my best friend got a flu shot and within two days he was paralyzed from the neck down. The flu shot triggered Gillian-Barre disease in him.......luckily......they gave him a new blood filtering treatment and saved him...........evidently it is a common enough of a thing that the feds have a payment amount for his situation.......$250K.......I guess the bottom line is if it is your turn......It's your turn........
