I have a question about possession

It’s seems like the SEC is stating that the downed punt was live even though we touched it with a knee down. They are claiming it has to be “possession”. And while i think I would agree that what happened in real time wasn’t possession…. If this was a fumbled ball, would that have been considered a recovery?

Only if it was uncontested but if you do just that much before the scrum then whoever comes out of the pile with the ball will be awarded possession. We all know the ball changes hands a dozen times and each of those touches are made with knees down. Someone has to wrap it up.

Just touching the ball while you are down is not possession. If he had stayed down for a second it probably would have been ruled a dead ball.

That said, I can already foresee us getting screwed out of a fumble recovery in the future because an opposing player touched the lloose ball with his knee on the ground.

That picture floating around around of tulu touching the ball with a knee down is very misleading. First of all, just touching the ball doesn't make it down. If that were true it would've been down on the diving first touch that kept it out of the end zone because our guy's body was down when he touched it. Secondly, and nobody is talking about this, but it was touched with a knee down for half a second and after he took his hand off it, the ball was still moving. The punt was not down. For it to be legally downed, we would have either possessed it, or it would have had to have completely stopped moving with concession from the receiving team.

If the referee hadn't made an incorrect hand signal, and they hadn't had two number fours on the field, it would have been a legal return. This is why our guys need to learn from this and not let the bad call cloud things.

the back judge who signaled the ball dead obviously thought it as a legitimate downing of the football or he would not have made the dead ball motion. I don't buy the inadvertent whistle story. It was not inadvertent but on purpose within then interpretation of the rules by the back judge.

The problem is the back judge waved his arms and MSU players stopped. No matter what, once that happens a play is dead. Clock is stopped. Play is dead. No matter what.

Yep. Bottom line is, that ref that waved the play dead should have said as much in order to get that td called back, and he didn't have the integrity to do so.
