Question lol

Let’s just say hypothetically Bona commits somewhere else, maybe UCLA. Where does the staff go from there? There are no Insta impact Big’s remaining in the 2022 class or even a potential re-class for 2023.

looks like if that were to happen the only option would be the transfer portal. That being said I guess you would be rolling the dice and hoping for a monster big transfer. In recent years that hasn’t happened. We all thought Sarr Was going to be the second coming of Wilt Chamberlain lol

If Collins shows anything this season some team will take him on potential alone. Oscar might even be the one who stays for a 2nd year at UK. I'd gladly take either. There isn't a viable reclass option really other than Baye Fall and he looks pretty raw and rail thin. Omaha Bilew is 6'8-6'9" but has let it be known he wants to play out on the floor. Taylor is 6'8" and more of a 3-4 but with the constant focus on him by the staff lately are they thinking he ends up being 6"10 or so and could reclass and play more of a stretch 5 if he were to reclass? That's probably not gonna happen but is very intriguing.

Are you aware of any big man re-class that could be a difference maker?

Maybe if CAL doesn’t land a Big it will force him to play a season of small ball…..
Or maybe we'll just play with 4 players instead of 5?

I would like to see that. I thought the best lineup we had in 2018 was with a 6’7 Washington at the 5. And if he makes his FT’s against KSU, we go to the FF that year, IMHO. And that team had zero 3 point shooting.

Put Wallace, Fredrick, Sharpe, and Livingston on the floor with Hopkins as a super skilled small ball 5 and I bet that team could do some damage. Almost impossible to guard. If Cal would (dare I say it) play a zone or at least bring quick double teams in the post, it could be tough on the defensive end as well.

Size matters, but speed kills. At least in the modern game. See Golden State in the last decade.

With the one-time transfer rule, there are going to be lots more options now though. Just looking at the list from this year, there was Tre Mitchell, Walker Kessler, Qudus Wahab, Dawson Garcia, Garrison Brooks, and of course Oscar Tshiebwe. All of which are absolutely high major caliber starters. Sarr was the best available at the time and he seemed like a great option but Cal will know to go after a hard nosed bully instead of a soft Frenchman this time.

the transfer portal.........a 2nd chance to land someone that rejected UK the 1st time or land someone that the staff deemed wasn't originally good enough

Well, coming out of high school that transfer portal player might not have been as good as another high school senior who UK recruited instead. But that one-and-done player UK recruited probably left after his freshman year (mostly on potential) and developed into a much better player on the next level as he and his game matured. But, the upperclassmen a team might get from the transfer portal has now grown, progressed, matured and developed to the point that he is good enough; and not only that, but is now probably a better one-year impact player than even a 5-star freshman.

By the way, sorry for your loss.

Big Bonas, small ball, and portals. That’s a thread. I’ll leave now.

We don't need a stud big man, we just need a guy who can defend in Cal's system, rebound and dunk. It's a guard/wing game now, this aint the 80s.

Sounds like you’re describing Ware, which will more than likely be back next year.

Prior to 2020, it was only grad transfers, hence the significant player improvement, although we still had Travis, Sestina, Sarr, and Tshiebwe now in 4 straight years.

6 or 7 guys like Tshiebwe and Kessler could be the new normal.

I could see Mark Williams moving on from Duke if coach K gives up on using Banchero on the perimeter and he sees Filipkowski and Lively coming in next year. Or Efton Reid at LSU, playing behind, rather than with, Darius Days, or Huntley-Hatfield behind Fulkerson at Tennessee, or Moussa Diabate behind Dickinson at Michigan, or Bittle and Dante at Oregon, Kessler and Smith at Auburn.
