Not maybe a bad call, definitely. The rule is pretty clear that the ball has to have a possibility of going in for it to be considered goal tending. No one thinks that shot had a chance to go in.Originally posted by PhoggyBottom:
Maybe it was a bad call and maybe not but what the hell was that guy thinking? The ball was defitely higher than the rim. There was some chance that it would hit the rim. Overall, just a ridiculously dumb play.
If I was a fan of SMU I would be troubled by the fact Jankovich did not step up and take charge. I've always thought that SMU is destined to take a step back towards mediocrity once Jankovich takes over for Brown. Pony recruiting is living off of Brown's reputation and skins on the wall.Originally posted by I.I.:
Brown was sick and didn't coach. Should have covered Alford most of game with bigger guard. Fairly obvious to the Ponyboard fans. they are Not happy with Brown tonight.

I would take your comments a step further and say SMU should have not been in a position that allowed for that call to decide the final outcome. SMU had the ball with :22 left on the clock and committed a horrible turnover. If they get the ball into Nic Moore's hands, he gets fouled and likely sinks 2 free throws, putting SMU up by 3 points. Folowing the questionable goaltending call, Moore panicked and took a 3-pt shot when he should have penetrated the lane, looking for contact on a layup or a last second dish to one of his bigs for an easy layup/dunk. SMU did a poor job of closing out this game, something they had done well down the stretch this season.Originally posted by PhoggyBottom:

I can't disagree with Cincinnati, but what makes you think TU has a better team than SMU right now? SMU swept TU, and played in the tournament.Originally posted by rabidTU:
I'm not sure SMU is the leagues best team right now. Probably Cincy and us over the Mustangs right now. Someone on TV noted that the state of Texas was 0-4 in the dance so far.
IMO
I expect SMU will hire a NASA trajectory expert to review the shot. All cameras from the event as well as spectators who were using iphone videos will be asked to contribute. But in the end it all comes down to the other outside ref who didn't have the guts to reverse his partners obvious missed call. Rarely will they do that to a partner especially in this type situation where he would be exposed personally to all the nation. Even the underneath ref who has no responsibility could overturn this too if he was 10 feet from it and saw it was clearly missing the rim. I look forward to a 190 page report from SMU and NASA.Originally posted by URedskin54:
No you actually don't have to call it. It was pretty easy to tell it had no chance to go in, which is why the only guy with a good view of the play didn't call goal tending. Even the CBS guys laughed at the head of officials when he tried "well you never know what's gonna happen when it hits rim." It was barely going to nick the rim and everyone know that.

That's a very difficult judgment call.Originally posted by Tulsafanzz:
Stupid play by Moreira of SMU, yes. Bad call by ref, yes.
The ref who was lined up behind the shooter, who could see the shot was wide right of the rim, did NOT make the call. Neither did the ref underneath the basket. A ref on the other side of the court, who did not have an angle to see the shot was wide right, made the call. The other refs didn't overrule him, so the call stood.
Mainly because IMO SMU's PG who was the difference maker at TU isn't playing well at the moment. But thats not evidenciary, just observationary.Originally posted by texcane1982:
