I don't understand. All these top players who want to play in the NBA, wanting to go to duke. These guys are supposed to be so intelligent to even get into duke { according to Vitale }. I don't see any Anthony Davis, DeMarcus Cousins, Karl Towns, John Wall, Devin Booker type players in the league that came from duke. I see all kinds of top ranked players heading into duke, but when they get to the they turn out to mediocre at best. I guess they just like to hear espn gush their name in big lights all over the tv, but when it comes to preparing them for the nba Coach Cal gets the job done, and duke's coach { however you spell his name }, produces soft no heart nba bust after bust. In my opinion chemically enhanced fat man Zion will blow out a knee and be done. even if he doesn't he won't get away with running over everyone in his path, like he did in college. Wait mabe he can take the Rat with him to the Knicks, and the nba refs will be scared of him just like the college refs and he will get the same calls he did at duke. LOL

K prolly doesn't even come close to exceeding his basketball recruiting budget because most of the ones that go there call him. They don't look at or even care about all of the Duke busts in the NBA. They just want to be set for life, you know, Commentator, analyst, color man at ANY network, not just ESPN.

Modern day recruiting has become nothing but influence by shoe companies and AAU teams... at least for the elite recruits. They, not what's actually in the kid's best interest, determine where they go...

Cal doesn't play that game... whether he should or shouldn't is debatable.

It's also why I fully welcome the elimination of the one and done rule.

True and k is what he is, only because of every advantage imaginable being handed to him!
The ncaa, nike and the media love the rat face b@$t@rd for some strange reason.
Once dean retired all the calls were given to saint k. Before that dean got all the calls and k none. It won’t matter who they hire unless they somehow get stevens from Boston but that ain’t happening his teams are playing well and in the playoffs he’s not going to down grade and you know k has at max 5 years left

Kevin Durant has a $300 million deal with Nike that includes a $50 million retirement contract.

The Warriors will pay him $61 million over two years. He could have signed a supermax in OKC.

the real money is in shoe deals.

First Duke has two admission standards, one for regular students and one for athletes. So you don't have to be smart to play for Duke just good.

To play Devil's advocate:

- Nike
- Coach K is a good coach
- NCAA/ESPN/media machine loves Duke (i.e., future opportunities for employment)
- Coach K coached Team USA to multiple gold medals
- ACC attention
- Top 40 national academic university (to satisfy the parents)
- beautiful campus

It's really not that hard to understand why they're landing kids.

If LSU can bring their coach back w/o repercussions after what was discussed on the call, its open season on getting away with even more.
Roy has operated this way for each time he's been a head coach. Deny, then deny even more and watch as every administrator gets replaced while you keep going about your business. Bobby Knight wishes this was how it could be with him.

I visited Duke once in the 1980's and was talking with some students. I saw this Cro-Magnon guy walk by (like 6'10" and 250lbs) and I casually remarked that he looked like a bench player for the basketball team.

I snidely said, "I'll bet he brings the overall Duke S.A.T. avg down...".

They were quick to correct me: "Yes, he is a walk-on for the basketball team, but no, he doesn't bring the SAT avg down. He made 1500..."

So, some players have to meet regular admissions standards, but clearly not the ones who are OAD...

You made me look up that roster (1988). Judging by the stats, I'm guessing it was George Burgin, 7'0", 0.5ppg.

I was just going off Cro-Magnon description and remembering my childhood in the '80s and always thought Nessley should've been with General Zod and crew in Superman 2.

Jordan always played fir the minimum so the bulls had more money to pay other players. Jordan’s real money was in endorsements.

Not sure what you base this on but as far as I know/remember this is completely made up.

When the bulls signed Rodman, Jordan agreed to play for the minimum so they could pay to get Rodman. I don't feel like researching it, but there it is.

Duke is not a dump and it is the place to be for the elite guys....because of these facts listed above. ...at this point no knows or can or will prove illegal payments. It is the school of choice for the media. It promotes two large audiences. Those who love Duke and those who hate Duke. It won’t stop when K is done. They have it going and ESPN CBS and others will keep it rolling. Cal was able to steal a little of the glamour from 2009-2015 but those days are gone. I do think Cal is better at individual player development for the league because that is what he specializes in and makes no bones about it. K is a better basketball coach and his win totals and rings prove it. Cal also hurt his reputation with the 19 and under episode a couple years ago while K is successful with team USA

Such a dorky atmosphere there with less than impressive women and to find a good party, they have to drive out of Durham. Home games feature 10,000 nerds jumping up and down in unison.

...I'll never get why elite dudes would want to go there.

Once again, that is completely false. When the Bulls signed Rodman in the summer of 1996, Jordan was still playing under the 8 year contract that he signed back in 1988. He DID NOT take a pay cut or play for the minimum. After that season he became a free agent and started signing $30 million contracts.

Say what you want, but it's easy to understand why top players go to Duke.

Duke is again the "It" school. We were for a while. They've recaptured it. K is widely considered the greatest coach of All-time. He coached team USA.

He's had Stars in the NBA for decades.

Grant Hill
Elton Brand
Carlos Boozer
Luol Deng
Reddick

Kyrie and Brand went #1
Bagley/Ingram/Parker/Jay Williams went #2

I can keep going but it's a huge list of guys that have been drafted top 10 under K.

THEN you've got to consider that every kid thinks he's unstoppable and will get to the NBA no matter what.

Kyrie Irving is a star. Jason Tatum is really good. As far as JJ Reddick goes. UK has a dozen players or more in the NBA that's better than Reddick.

Duke is also anti-Semitic so there's that. May not necessarily be different from a lot of schools but doesn't bode well. I mention to the Creator priodically that Duke & UNC, in particular, both hate his people.

I bet zion is a relative bust in the nba. He’s gonna be injury riddled and won’t have the stamina to live up to the hype. Plus he’s not going to get the ncaa whistle when he clobbers stephon curry

I think it’s because kids want to have the time of their life in College and playing for Duke is probably an amazing experience. You’re the center of attention at Duke, whether it’s to love or hate, people tune in. Ratings don’t lie, Duke moves the needle.

My recollection is more like he played well below market value (I don't know about league minimum) until the end when he got paid for several years.
