I didn't understand the game plan at all

Didn't get the ball to Knox or SGA nearly enough in the second half.

Seemed content to play k-state tempo.

Didn't spread the floor and drive when SGA seemed capable of getting to the rim.

Didn't post Knox, who was being face guarded -- often by a much smaller player.

Didn't call a timeout when down 1. Horrible possession.

In the SEC Tournament Cal told the guys he hated playing slow. And then we walked the ball up the court the whole damn game, even when there were transition opportunities off missed shots. Which was even more puzzling given our struggles in the half court. I don’t understand it.

1. They were pretty clearly doing everything they could to prevent SGA drives and Knox getting the ball.

2. We didn’t get many opportunities for breakouts, and part of the reason we lost is we tried to force things too much.

3. Spread the floor with who? They clearly were taking away the paint and daring us to shoot.

4. Unfortunately Knox doesn’t create his own shot well, and his decision making is suspect. Relying on him to create is a bad idea.

It's odd.
And of all teams you don't want to allow to settle in on defense--- k state. It was mind boggling.

PREACH!!! Excellent post and didn't see it coming and he needs to be asked about this and have this brought up because he's got to change if he wants to finish. You have to score to win in this tournament (he also said that repeatedly) and 58 pts isn't going to get it done.

1) they were face guarding Knox with a kid 4" shorter. Post him up. And put Gabriel on the opposite side so they cant double from the weak side.

2) k-state had plenty of misses. Push the ball off a miss.

3) so shoot. . . Namely Knox and Gabriel. I didn't like the circle play he ran over and over. It allowed a couple mid range shots, but like you said- the interior was crowded. I don't think uk flattened out and stretched the court enough. Cats played pretty compact despite the fact that was how k state was defending.

4) gotta rely on someone. I though Knox had some real mismatches that were ignored.

I thought we forced way too much all game. In the first half all we needed was to go down low to washinWash a couple of possessions in a row and it would change the momentum of the game.
The truth is, this bunch is very young and it shows

I agree. I don’t think we had a game plan. I really don’t understand always letting the other team dictate how we play, & I really really don’t understand cal saying he doesn’t like to play slow while sga walks it up the court every time. My question is if cal doesn’t want to play that way, why doesn’t he force them to speed up or sit them down?

Did not see us try to do anything
We did not try to force tempo one single time
We were content to just play very slow and grind it
I really don’t understand that

We struggled playing slow grind it out ball all year. Cal has consistenley let the other team dictate tempo since he’s been here. He took away our perimeter game once again, almost cost us against Davidson it did cost us tonight. KState, not a very good 3 point shooting team hit almost as many as we took which it was about the same not counting our last two throw up 3’s.

In modern day college basketball you have to make threes. It’s as simple as that.

1. Again, Knox is soft and he doesn’t do well when he has to make decisions.

2. They did a great job of getting back, so you’d just be driving into people.

3. Knox’s whole game is the midrange. He’s not a perimeter shooter. He can hit spot-ups okay, but he’s not someone you can rely on to hit a lot of threes. Gabriel is simply a spot-up shooter after kickouts and he was never open.

4. We rode PJ and he couldn’t hit his ft’s. He still played hard and you can’t be mad at him too much.

I’m not sure how you know they did a great job getting back. We never pushed the ball. How could you tell?

Not to beat the dead horse, but...

1) ya gotta push the ball in order to beat a defense down the court. It's easy to get back and get set when you walk it up. And even if cats pushed and k state took away transition- at least you change pace. Also, k state is tough to execute against in the halfcourt. Walking the ball up only gives you less time to do so.

2) Gabriel wasn't open bc of what cal was and wasn't running. Again, I wish he posted up Knox against the smaller defender, and put Gabriel opposite side. If Kevin pivots into a weaksode double- their is your kick out. If not, I think he beats the smaller decent often enough to make l state adjust.

3) agree about PJ

Knox hasn't posted up all season really. Even with a guy 4" shorter guarding him hard to expect him to do that and excell when he hasn't practiced it all year.

I'm disappointed in Sasha's development so far. Richards is a freshman. I thought Sasha would be better than he is. Our 6'7 power forward is our only inside presence on offense on a team with 5 guys 6'9 or better on the roster. Many of them former 5 stars and McDonald's AA's.

We fouled out half of their starters too and their best player. They had one guy that could hurt us on that layup and we let him beat us.

Pretty awful all around night for Cal.

That's 3 times in a row (14, 15, 18) he's got a glimpse of the finish line and gotten a serious case of *** puckerage

Opportunities for breakouts?

We walked the entire game and never tried to push it once.

I agree on tempo. How many transition points did we have?? I mean we had chances to push and speed the pace up but didn’t attempt it. Cal said he hates slow pace. This was a pathetic attempt at a game. No adjustments at all just kept saying “no where to move”

I think we don’t post up Knox a lot for the same reason he is a mediocre rebounder for how big and athletic he is. He wants no part of mixing it up down low. Mixed with his decision making that’s not a situation I trust him in.

I think posting Knox would have been worth a shot, not sure why we didn't try it out a few times. But, you nailed some good points. They dared us to shoot from outside and we didn't. They had the lanes cut off, but for some reason we kept trying to drive it in there anyway. We lost at least 5 possessions that I can think of off the top of my head because of that.

I watch the NBA quite a bit. For the life of me I have no idea how Knox could possibly go in the first round. Soft, avoids contact, can't change direction off the dribble, certainly won't rebound. And they pay millions to guys like that?? No wonder Cal "develops" them after only a few months.

Not accusing you of anything, but a lot of these same people would throw a fit if we threw up twenty threes and missed 15 of them. Which was a likely scenario.

Weber decided to junk the game up and slow the tempo.

Cal countered by pounding it inside and earning a ton of FT attempts.

A couple more FTs go down, and Cal wins.

Cal was going to try and "out grind" K State from the beginning and never changed his plan.

It didn't work.

Oh he had one and it was a brilliant strategy. Feed PJ all night long! PJ makes just four more free throws and Cal is a genius. SGA and Knox could get nothing all night and that is a credit to KSU’s defense. Feeding PJ was the only thing working and it was a great game plan. Just didn’t convert the free ones.

One stat tells all for this team, assist. When the have 10 or less for the game the tend to stink.

That's what he has been saying for the past couple weeks.
Press a pressing team, out grind a grinding team( not exactly those words), etc.
He got owned again.

Getting down 13-1 enpowered Kansas State and created a nervous edge for Cats all night, the start set the tone for the game. The first play which should have been an easy dunk for Richards didnt help either, it was bad mojo all night, wasnt a big fan of Cal Poison comment, why even say it, borrowed it from Saban, just another wasted opportunity in a litany of such events over the past 9 years
