It occurred to me this morning that Dan and I are on a very similar path, although in two different fields.

I have an extremely stable job in sales. Crazy, but true. It is next to impossible to get fired from my company. Having a few down years won’t even do it. Sound familiar? We are actually one on the 3 major leaders in our industry. In some products, #1. In others, #3 or 4. In the big stuff, I have about a 15% market share in my territory. I’ve grown it every year slightly. This year, I’m hoping for 18%. Next year, 20. The next 25%. It takes time to build. Huge jumps aren’t sustainable (UNM).

I have headhunters after me all the time. I am well respected and usually feared by my peers in competitive quoting situations. I can’t use it to get a raise like Dan has, but it does boost my confidence that I am doing a good job.

I have entertained openings at competitors. Not because I want to leave, or would seriously consider it, but because I want to know their business plan, direction, and as much competitive info as I can mine from them. I also believe that as long as they are chasing me, the territory is empty and my chance of increasing market share and sales rises.

For me, I am making more money than I ever have in my life. I give Christ all the glory for it. I don’t take it for granted and we give generously, but still not enough. If I were offered another $50k a year, it’s a no brainer. I’m not giving up the best gig for a short term gain with no guarantees. I make enough to live comfortably and have security. I’m not chasing money.

My territory is my baby. I’ve built it. Doubled sales in less than 5 years. Hoping for a 20% growth next year. I want to be #1. It takes time.

I hope Dan has the same attitude and long term strategy. I’ve cussed him. I don’t like him at times. But that is fandom. He is at a crossroads. I hope he is playing TN for fools and extending their coaching search for another week. Could it be that he is trying to keep another good candidate from arriving in the East and making them settle for another up and comer? I hope so. It’s what I would do.
