Alright then. Still tacky and unprofessional. Fire her in person with three masks on.

Spoken like the true dumbass you are. Try running a business. Problem employees make an already tough environment for small businesses unbearable.

Of couse, moron, no rational employer would fire a core employee for a freakin pastry. There has to be more to the story, and I'm sure the owners of SB have another side to tell. But they still have a business to run, hold themselves to a higher standard, and can't just throw **** against the wall or race bait like so many on the other side. You can bet some bloodsucking lawyer is licking his chops hoping for SB to stoop to their level.

As far as firing someone over text- tacky, but so 17ing what. If the whole world has begun hiring off the likes of ZipRecruiter.com and conducts interviews on Zoom, outrage over a text message termination is just ridiculous. The whole GD world has lost it's manners and to draw the line with that is ridiculous. You wanna **** on some tacky manners- go after people who steal.

I was laid off over the phone one time years ago and I had to find a job pretty quick. The lack of manners in that situation were the least of my concerns.

Respect. You make a valid point and you may have changed my mind on the tackiness of the text firing.

No, the racial text was separate. Somehow it got brought into this and is being spread - apparently a text between owner and an employee discussing someone taking money out of the tip jar. That's the screenshot SB said was fake and would have been doctored.

They have not denied the text firing the girl, that I'm aware of.

There are a lot of new coffeeshop type places that have opened since SB, I'm sure they'd all like to steal some of that business. And as dumb as it sounds - a lot of ole miss people aren't fans for SB.

This is what I saw on Facebook.....a bunch of Ole Miss fans coming after them. They hold a grudge because when SB opened in Tupelo, they were still unapologetically pro MSU. That's probably what's contributing to this....stupid insecure Ole Miss fans.

I can almost guarantee you that she wasn't really fired for eating a pastry, but that the pastry was just the straw that broke the camel's back (or alternatively she was just a subpar employee in general without presenting clear cases for write-ups and discipline) and they stupidly put it in a text message as the reason. I would be more than a little surprised if they had made it this long if this was actually a good employee and they fired her for stealing one pastry. Certainly it happens, but it's the exception, not the rule.

Agree. There is almost certainly more to the story here.

Aww pumpkin you mad. I know it's obvious they wouldn't fire an employee over eating a 10c pre sale scone yet they did. Weird. Must of brought up some trauma from your life. Sorry boo

They proabably have the zero tolerance policy due to past issues with other employees. If you've got a problem with an employee stealing, so you fire them and enact a zero tolerance policy to discourage it in the future - you can't let someone slide even if they are a decent employee.

Brooke may be a saint, but you let her off the hook then you've got to let the next person off too.

Since I’d bet money there’s no way you have ever run any sort of equitable enterprise, I truly feel sorry for your employers. I hope they can replace you with an automated fry-cook that is operational 50% of the time to increase efficiency.

A couple of other possibilities:
1-Katelyn is in Starkville and the employee is in Tupelo and wanted the matter settled immediately, and
2-She may have wanted some sort of digital record of what was said instead of just a phone call, which we know now, may not be as fake-proof as once thought.

Firing someone over text would normally be considered tacky and unprofessional unless there's still a global pandemic going on right now. One where firing them in person could actually be more dangerous for them and the one doing the firing than if it was done via text or other non face to face means.

^^^^^Obviously been fired via Text Message^^^^^^

All good advice. One more bit of unsolicited advice, change your zero tolerance no free food for employees policy. That's ridiculous. You could probably fire every employee you've ever had with a policy like that. Allow every employee one food item and one drink item per shift.

I'm sipping on their coffee now. I'll continue to purchase. Screw the hate-filled kids that claim it's justice to attack a business for following their policy. Even if texting/emailing is a really stupid way to handle it. (I expect to win the slogan contest now)

Cancel Culture/Generation Z/WokeTwitter or whatever you want to call them are certain of their judgements and God given right to rescue us all from our own privileges and moral shortcomings.

They are starting to eat their own now so the rest of the Woke crowd say it is a problem... now.

They should put “Who dropped the ball worse, us or Arkansas baseball?” as their witty billboard of the week and just let this blow over.

The left always destroys itself. Someday the woke will find themselves under the same attacks from the woker, over and over again. Until totalitarianism takes over. The French Revolution and the Russian Revolutions are classic examples. That is why my retirement plans involve other countries. I truly fear the experiment in self government and liberty called the USA is coming to an end.

It's not just unprofessional, it's going to create a legal issue. She probably didn't really fire an employee for stealing one pastry. There are probably other employees that have taken a pastry and had to be reminded to pay for it that have not been fired. If Brook is AA and other employees who have not been fired are not, she just created a huge headache for herself by being unprofessional. It doesn't matter what led up to the firing, it's going to be hard for her to argue that she wasn't fired for stealing a pastry when that's the way the text reads.

Now if they actually have a zero tolerance policy and fire anybody that takes a pastry without paying for it before hand, the first time, then none of this applies. I'm just guessing that's not the case because that would be a real pain in the *** to lose employees over a $0.30 pastry.

Someone I knew in college was fired from their cold stone side of the store for a similar incident. They knew the rules and supposedly intended to pay for the food. They didn’t follow the rules. As a business owner you can’t know intent or take chances over and over again with college kids. They come and go in a short amount of time and it’s better to cut bait.

Fire somebody in person tho.

Call me crazy but couldn't she fire her socially distanced? If you can't look someone in the eye and fire them, then you probably aren't owner/manager material to begin with.

Also, as a college student the chances of you even being hospitalized with COVID, much less dying from it, is so infinitesimal it's a joke. Quit fear-mongering. Using it as an excuse not to fire someone is patently ridiculous. If it's safe enough for her to work in-person at the shop, it's safe enough for her to get fired from six feet away (with a mask if you're feeling cautionary). Hell, you can fire her outside, socially distanced with a mask on. But you have to do her the decency of doing it in person.

I agree with you but you can't discipline her for firing the employee non first person right now. I don't make the weird rules.

"Woke" is an unhelpful word to apply in the case of Brooke's firing. The support for her isn't driven contemporary social justice fights but working class sticking up for the little man.

Now, reaction to the alleged racist texts, which seem pretty questionable--that's maybe a product of wokeness.

I can say with 100% certainty they’d still take advantage of it.

Seen it first hand in multiple restaurants.
