So we went from 60,000 last year to 2,000 this year, but at least our walk-ons and third stringers were safe from the portal poachers!

Whatever the trajectory of the club is for 2025, it was not altered by the fact that top line players did not scrimmage today.

Skipped it and I did have a friend down there today. He said it was a ghost town on O street and at the Rail Yard.

Amazing ******* job by Matt. Literally just took away a home game.

Good lord people need to get over the spring game.
I get it, I do...but this is the 8th home game.

Should we also get over the 7th home game? This is millions of dollars to the lincoln economy.

It is also tons of fun for fans.

No way the spring game brings in the same money to Lincoln as a regular home game.

Oh no, no chance that it is exactly the same.

A home game is 90K...spring game is 60K so there is a difference there. I am guessing that for a regular home game you have another 35K that are there just to party and the the spring game might be another 15K just to party.

So there is a difference, for sure, but clearly a "regular" spring game is a big deal

I misread your post .went back I understand it now. I am not necessarily disagreeing on a regular spring game. If you want to not Televise and even have some other stuff like the pro bowl skill games to for the top guys I get that . I didn’t go I don’t want to pay money to watch woman’s flag football and Sean Callahan trying to catch a punt. Some stuff was just plain dumb.

The portal continues to create havoc across college football, this time destroying the Nebraska tradition of a big Spring game event. Well I guess on the positive side though it will keep fans from extracting projections from Spring performances about the Fall.

If it was truly about the portal, that could have been easily avoided with some planning.

That was an excuse.

The scrimmaging was fun to watch when they were scrimmaging. I appreciate the effort in the games but they got tedious and was a big side show.

There were some players who impressed.

That photo is just sad. Not that I can blame anyone for not going. I didn't go. They're not doing anything there that interests me.

The portal did not kill the spring game. 0 reason it couldn’t have been held after it closed.

Not disagreeing, but if that wasn't the reason, what was it? I don't think we're in the business of willfully decreasing revenue. Did the administration really so arrogantly think there would be a comparable turnout for this dog and pony show?

OK, then tell us EXACTLY what killed the Spring game if it wasn't about exposing players to be poached thru the portal?
They didn't want to display how much they did improve or did not improve over the offseason. I choose the latter because I'm a horrible, cynical person when it comes to Nebraska football.

Not having a game definitely hurt the attendance and was the reason why I chose not to attend..

More people were more concerned going to the equipment sale and I really enjoyed my tour of the Tom Osborne Legacy complex.

For the most part a lot of the spring games had bad attendance.

Well OK you have an opinion BUT I honestly do not see what difference that would make. Whatever state of improvement they made or didn't make will be fully visible during the first game. And in a Spring Game they didn't have to show anything they wanted to save as a surprise. Spring games traditionally are pretty vanilla.

I personally do think the exposure to the portal and the game being streamed on the BIG network was THE factor. Remember as a huge cost they also gave up a huge recruiting opportunity with no Spring game as recruits in attendance were always impressed by the fan turnout for a Spring game.

I believe Rhule when he says the Spring Game was changed up due to a poaching threat through the Transfer Portal.

That says to me we aren't very deep at many positions and the loss of a couple of key players would have a very negative effect on the team's production.

Does that prevent crooked schools from secretly continuing to recruit transfers for the next portal opening? I think not.

Isn't the next one in December, after an entire season of players being showcased on the field? The portal dates don't jibe with the poaching excuse. What am I missing here?

The portal closed Friday. The game would have been Saturday. Excuse does not compute.

When did attending a spring football game at Nebraska become a big deal. I don't remember it being a huge deal as a kid, but we left omaha when I was 12. I just don't remember every going to one in the 80s.

I think Callahan year 1 was the first time I remember the spring game being a big dea, outside of the state anyway.

Rhule's decision may have also had to do with receiver Demitrius Bell and defensive back Bly Hill sustaining knee injuries last year in the spring game. Bell was a 4-star redshirt freshman with offers from Alabama and Georgia who missed the whole year. Hill made it back for the last two home games and had one tackle at Wisconsin and is now a sophomore.

They could have not said a word about who was going to play and just given the top players a couple of series. They would have had 60K there for vanilla handoffs then 3 quarters of walk ons and 4th teamers.

This is probably true.

They totally messed with such a simple and effective formula when all they had to do was wait until the portal closed and had the spring game then.

I remember the only spring game I attended. Tom Sorley pitched on an option ... into the hands of a defender!
