If we did steal Bill Young from SMU, a very viable rivalry probably just got a little more intense.

Why do we care whether a former high school coach is an assistant or not. No flame. Legit question. Is he bringing a recruit?

With his pro and college resume, all you have to comment on is his single year at a high school. Granted it was last year, and the subject of why he was there is important, and needs to be brought up, but that's the only comment u wanna make?

Check his whole resume'. One year at a high school after years at top programs didn't seem to bother Chad Morris.

BY is a solid guy and coach. He plays more of a passive style than I like but will have his guys assignment sound. His experience should be valuable on what looks to be a young staff.

Is he the answer to our defensive issues though, especially when we can assume they will be on the field a lot since I don't foresee 5-7 minute drives being the norm? I'd love to know what happened with the Patterson deal unless Graham threatened him with something...

This. I I I I I

Young is not one of those guys that will continuously stunt, blitz. But that may slightly change since he's scheming against these modern up tempo teams. He will probably adjust his gameplan to the type of offense he is against. IMO.

Tweet from Don King indicating Young will be D-line coach at TU but no mention of DC position. Tweet is as follows:

"Source tells me, Bill Young has changed his mind on going to SMU to become Defensive line coach at TU"

Maybe it is just poorly worded.

He has an impressive resume.

We stole one from smu.

This won't add to the rivalry; their fan won't notice.

I understand Young has an impressive and long history of success, but he also will need a different type of athlete to install his defensive scheme successfully and I'm not sure we have any of that on campus right now. We are agonizingly slow on the defensive side of the ball and we don't really have a dominant DL that can create pressure with bringing an extra blitzer. In 2012 when we were bringing Dorris, St. John, and the rest of that DL, we generated a ton of pressure on the QB with just the front 4, and we had depth. Last year we couldn't generate any pressure without bringing an extra defender and we were seriously thin up front.

World says DC...

In related news, Brent Guy joining the staff at Memphis as a position coach. Not sure that's good - he did a good job until the talent well dried up, put him on a staff that can bring in talent and he could help that D improve a lot which obviously doesn't benefit us.

I tend to credit our 2 great pass rushing linebackers for our ability to pressure the QB in 2012. St. John was the only DL with a legit pass rush. As much as I liked Dorris, he was not recruited for his ability to get to the QB, he was a tough run stopping DE meant for a 3 man front. Brown and Jackson's ability made things a lot easier on our DL and we blitzed them a lot.

I can see this. We also had some pretty good DBs that were pretty good in man coverage. QBs never did have a ton of time to find receivers down field. Look at Bortles and UCF that year...our D absolutely swallowed him up. He was dangerous, but not his arm, it was his legs that hurt us if he was able to move outside the pocket or our central DL got pushed outside.

Point is, we don't have a ton of speed/talent on the defensive side of the ball right now. Young is going to have to come up with some stunts and schemes to generate pressure and take pressure off the DBs. LBs will need to be much better as well.

That would be a concern regardless of who we hired as DC. We need more speed on that side of the ball.

I like the 3-4 for our recruiting and the guys we have on the D-line coming back. Luetjen and Brubaker in the middle good rotation. Alexander and ? on the strong side then Smith and Wilson rotate the weak side. Wilson and Smith look to me like one of them could help as a LBer. Need emergency help at LBer. Has anyone watched Hanks or Quickle their profile showed 4.5 or 4.6 speed as to LBer prospects. Have to recruit a difference maker ready to go if going to four LBs.

On our pay side, Chris Harmon is saying Coach Monty wants to run a 3 man front.
So either a 3-3-5 or 3-4, (basically the same thing)

Exactly what I've been thinking reading all this 3-4 and 3-5 talk. Is a coach whose pushing 70 going to change defensive schemes after 40 years of coaching the 4-3? Makes zero sense.

I would like to think his years of experience will make such a transition fairly easy.

Maybe somebody can correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think he's ever ran anything except the 4-3? Is it possible that the talk of a 3-4 or 3-5 was when we thought another DC was coming aboard and now we will play what BY knows?

I think is more likely you will see a 4-3 or 4-2-5 than a 3-4 or 3-3-5. Coaches live and die by their schemes and they play what they are comfortable in.

Pretty much the same thing I was thinking lawpoke unless he's convinced Montgomery that a 4-3 is the way to go? Have to base your decision on what you have on campus. Slim chance at getting very many new bodies in ready to hit the field on Saturdays in the fall!

Depending on the DE a 3-4 and 4-3 can be interchangeable. 3-4 is all about the LB play and if you have a reliable NT.

Interchangeable? The DL has different gap responsibilities and the LBs have different base assignments. Is there one college team who runs a true base 3-4 and base 4-3? Why would you teach your kids two schemes and which scheme do you recruit for if you run both?

Interchangeable in the sense that many 3-4 defenses walk up a 4th pass rusher and play essentially a 4-3 a lot of the time. I think Young will run a 4-3 because that's what he's comfortable with, but gap assignments would not be an issue. D-lineman already know different gap assignments from different looks they run anyway. Many high schools will run both a 4-3 and 5-2, and then occasionally throw in a 3 man front at times.
