They only have eyes for Hugh.

All the Vols I know think it’s going to happen and think they won’t have to pay the buyout. They also don’t care one flip about the things he’s done in the past. They would sell their souls to be relevant again.

Only a scumbag like Phil Fulmer would do something like hiring Hugh Freeze when the rest of the SEC won't touch him. Kinda like manipulating things to arrange a scenario where they can fire Pruitt without a buyout. Lest we forget how he weaseled himself into his head coaching job to begin with, or how he went snitch on Alabama to the NCAA.

Fulmer and Freeze are peas in a pod. But hiring Freeze as your program faces NCAA sanctions?

Weren’t they too morally superior to hire Schiano a few years ago?

Is there a sports reporter for a rival school that can bring down Freeze again since the NCAA probably wont do it?

Clay Travis runs their fan base. They lap up whatever he says. Travis was the main one behind the madness with Schiano. Clay/Vols latch onto whatever narrative fits their advantage. I hope they hire him during an NCAA probation/investigation. They’ll get exactly what they deserve.

Couple Freeze’s recruiting tactics with East Tennessee talent and he will get caught and fired again. You have to go nation wide at Tennessee and it will cost them both.

You know who would have been perfect for Tennessee? One Mike Leach. Tennessee can still get top 15-20 national talent on name alone, and they have historically attracted QBs. Add in their pedigree and there you go. Plus, they've become a sort of also-ran program (for various reasons) so a 'system' coach is not a bad play.

Funny how things work out. They rarely go the way they 'should'. ADs are too stupid to really see the forest for the trees.

I'd say the same for Arkansas too, but not as big of a scale as Tennessee obviously. Then you have a Nebraska....why wouldn't they hire an option guy? They feel it's below their standard. But it makes all the sense in the world.

Hugh is not a perfect man by a long shot. He's not a perfect coach either, but he's damn good. He will not have to cheat at the level he did at Ole Miss to get players and he will win at UT. Mullens probably crapping his pants all over again.

Edit: Tennessee already cheats at a level beyond Ole Miss, so they won't look as stupid or obvious as Ole Miss did.

I love it. Merlinz should be realizing that he had it damn good at MSU, but I doubt it.

Truth be known, while he did great things for us, to me he'll always be best known for quitting on recruits, quitting in big games and quitting on that 2018 team. I wish him no success. He's already got plenty of money so that's not that big of a deal. King Jackie is still our best coach ever.

I'm not sure the TN name garners much respect from 18 year olds. Since the day those guys were born TN is just above .500 (122-101) with just 10 bowls in those 18 years in which they lost 4

Definitely a quitter. And it started when Hugh arrived.
I will give him credit for not letting the cigar boys take over the recruiting like the network at OM did, but you still gotta fight and he didn't He just rolled over on recruiting.
But to me it really showed at game time in November. from 2012 on until he left.

Curious.

Did clay Travis really have a moral problem with schiano or did he just not want him as coach so he attacked him based on morality?

Or did he have a problem with schiano at all and he was simply fighting the national media for attacking Tennessee?

https://www.thebiglead.com/posts/jo...g-schiano-rutgers-jerry-sandusky-01dv1sznpddj

My feeling all along was that the goal was to undermine the Schiano hiring because it was underwhelming after all of the Jon Gruden/Chip Kelly rumors, and then Mullen left them at the altar.

What they did to Schiano was criminal.

TN isn't hiring Freeze if they're under NCAA penalties.

I was thinking the same thing. That would be like inviting trouble.

If they did hire Freeze, between the NCAA inquiries, and the Bama boys with a personal vendetta, that program would under a microscope the likes of which no program would want.

There are certainly some TN fans dumb enough to want Freeze, but anyone with sense knows the scrutiny he would bring isnt going to worth it.

That was exactly the game plan. Any Tennessee fan who pretends otherwise is lying to themselves.

Everyone seems to either forget about or not know about Allyn McKeen. He was our best coach ever, by far. Check out the record: 1939 to 1948.

Living in Knoxville and listening to TN sports radio daily, UT fans are the worst. They would do anything to be relevant again. They can go from we’re back— win streak from last season— to blow the whole thing up and start over.

The coach with 6 losing seasons in 13 years in a very much weaker SEC West? Hilarious! Jackie deserves a LOT of credit for showing us and the world that you can win at MSU, but Mullen was a MUCH better coach.

No desire to spell out this comparison for 15th time, but yes, that coach. The last 3 years taints it, but for the first decade he was better than Danny. Danny maybe could have cemented his legacy in 2018, but he quit, so he does not pass GO, he does not collect $200.

Didn’t Tennessee almost hire him before they did Pruitt? Seems like there was a ton of smoke around that. I could be misremembering it though.

I do agree, Leach would do very well there. He will do well at MSU, also.

Not even close. The schedules Mullen faced were far tougher, even with the added I-AA game. In 13 years, Jackie only had 45 games vs ranked teams and 15 vs top 10 teams. In only 9 years Mullen had 42 games vs ranked teams and 19 vs top teams.

Sorry for all the replies, but I read all the thread at once and saw several things that interested me.

I know most of you don’t like #NotAFan McCready, and I don’t particularly either. But he’s well-sourced in those circles, and on their podcast today he said he’s hearing that Gus Malzahn is the leading candidate to replace Pruitt. He also said that Pruitt is a dead man walking. Take it for what it’s worth.

That’s what I felt like also.

They didn’t want him so they trashed him to get him out.

Sucks but it seems to be a tactic of a lot of people these days.

Well, if you can't hire Hugh Freeze, you might as well hire Hugh Freeze Lite.

That’s funny. Is he going in to clean up a program or just coming in to show them how to do it without getting caught?

If Tennessee hired Malzahn, wouldn't that save Auburn a bunch of buyout money?

Has Freeze been cheating at Liberty? Or is his opposition so weak? He almost beat NC State as I recall, and did manage to eke out a win against Coastal Carolina in the bowl (by poor coaching and execution on Coastal's part).
