Had to put down my 5 year old today. We were walking and all of a sudden his back legs stopped working. Slipped disc created instant paralysis. Was going to try to manage with anti-inflammatory meds but he was just in so much pain I couldnt do that to him. I am absolutely crushed right now. He has a 3 year "brother" that I am worried about because he has never been alone. Sorry for the bummer here but it helps to type out thoughts. RIP Linus, you were a good boy.

Sorry to hear it. I never had pets growing up, so my first experience having to make the decision was four months ago and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

I have 6 dogs and saying goodbye is why I don't plan on getting anymore anytime soon. 1 blind diabetic dog who is a year or less before the end.

We had two litter of puppies as well. 1 died of parvo at age 9 months after being vaccinated. Never fun. :(

Had the same thing happen to one of our dogs growing up. My mom would hold him and work his legs each night and luckily he fully recovered. It was definitely tough at first though. Sorry for your loss.

Had the exact same thing happen to ours several years ago. Horrible to see. Felt absolutely helpless. It happened so quick. He was fine then he was gone. Hang in there sir. My sympathies.

Yeah it's the suddenness of it all. If he was 15 I'd get it but 5 and no signs of any illness it's crushing. Gonna give my other little fella lots of loving. He is only 3

My first dog as an adult will turn 10 this Sep. I resisted getting a dog for a long, long time because I was afraid we'd get attached and be crushed when the time came. Yep, that's how it's gonna be.

That hurts @mwulf. Having my Husky put down was rough. But she lived 15 years and had tumors and could barely walk. Didn't want to see her in pain anymore. Pets are a gift and should be cherished.

Condolences mwulf. Our pets give our lives a lot of meaning and enjoyment. It is difficult when that comes to an end.

Sorry for your loss. Pets become family so fast and losing them is never easy. Hope the brother will be okay, had a friend who had one dog pass away and the other was sad for months.

I had to put down an 18 year old cat we got as a kitten. I knew it would be emotional, but youzer it was tough. Hang in there.

Dogs are the best. Sorry for your loss. When you're ready there are tons out there that could use someone who loves them.

I have had to put down two in the last 7 years. It sucks. Currently have a 3 year old. I hope I don't have to do it again for a long time.

Sorry for your loss. That is a tough one. My wife and I do not have kids so are dogs get all our focus. Lost two dogs within the last three years. One to cancer that just devastated me. Jet, our Llewellin Setter is sitting at my feet as I type this. He is always with me. I run him everyday even with our hot weather. We do it along an irrigation canal so he can jump in and cool off whenever he wants. We never do anything without thinking about him first.

Brings tears to my eyes. My sister had to put her lab down today. I know when my dear boy (my avatar) crossed over just before 10 yrs of age...it literally broke my heart. I would haven given up body parts for just one more day with that boy. My commute goes past the emergency vet office, and I frequently say a prayer as I drive by for anyone that's going through this.

Dogs are God's gift to mankind. Treat them that way. Every day. Every way.

id like to follow up that we’ve ended up with 2 havanese pups.
brothers with same mother, from 2 different litters.
there isnt a day the younger one doesnt curl up in my spot while i get ready for work, or they run like savages to greet me when i get home, or crawl up on my chest before we head off to sleep for a big scratch to end the day.
they literally make you forget all the bullsh1t. all.of.it!
(and a stray grey kitten made our garage his home this summer. welp, we grabbed up that dude (he was thirsty!!!), too!).

i read this article recently about our connection being in each other’s species dna.
i think when the first humans hunted, wolves ended up getting involved.
i gather they learned ‘those dudes kill stuff and leave some extras’ and became domesticated.
survival instincts, but it feels more than that.

Yeah so my guy had his back issue on our usual morning walk. So I had to carry him back a mile. Walked that route this morning with Charlie and when I got to the spot where he went down my chest got tight. I know time will heal all wounds and whatnot but man this is tough. At age 5 you just assume you have 7-10 more and he was perfectly healthy except that damn slipped disc. I will say I may have got more done today than I have in some time. Just trying to stay busy and love on my other pup. I will get him a companion but not until at least the summer. Thanks for the kind replies. Animals tend to be the one uniting force. Watching Ted Lasso has helped just because that show is so damn positive

Here’s the scoop. They love us more than we can ever love them.. TRUTH! We snuggle them, pet them, tell them how much we love them. But it’s nothing compared to how much they love us. Funny story, but it brings home the truth. Lock your lover and your dog in the trunk of your car. .After an hour, open the trunk. Which one is glad to see you? Here’s what I know. The only thing that makes the heartache of losing a four legged friend easier. Is PUPPY BREATH! Go get another Pal. And don’t let the Soctal Warriors tell you which is better. Adoption or breeder? Reguardless, they both need us. If you believe in the Good Lord. I can’t imagine that he would not look favourably upon someone who enhances The life of one of his creations. I’m convinced, their short lifespan is due to the fact that they don’t need as long as to prove their goodness to enter the pearly gates. Get busy, there’s a pup out there that need you NOW!
