If UNC does this right, it will be one of the first coaching hires among power programs that will prioritize NIL. Thats a good position to be in. Every other coaching hire until now has basically been centered around recruiting, player development, Xs and Os, and if you can be just sleazy enough to land a top player... now? It just has to be a coach that understand player value, NIL funding, etc.

I dont think they will get the tier 1 guys (Dusty, Golden) but I do think they will make a surprisingly good hire here. Hope im wrong.
Actually, I think traditional coaching skills - Xs & Os, identifying upside and character, player development, etc. - should be the focus now more than ever (or a very, very long time). The player dollar valuing, agent negotiations, NIL, etc. stuff you mentioned should be the job of a GM.

Michig can match and surpass anything UNC offers. They’re not going to let May go.

Lloyd I think has a lot of Few in him. Born raised coached his whole life on that side of the country. Few could’ve had any job he wanted over the years and chose the peace and quiet of Washington where people do other things besides rabidly fixate on sports and coaches.

Arizona a bit more sporty and concerned with Bball but as long as things go well I see loyalty and consistency winning out.

If UNC starts to be denied, don’t be surprised if Cal and Pearl are at least quietly whispered especially by their fans on ESPN.

Its more about equal money and leaving, but I guess we will see. Golden/Florida has a 40.5 million dollar contract with a 30.3 million dollar buyout just to get him in the door before you even pay him his new salary. I just don't see any way Carolina even looks at that. Oats is a little better, but even he has a 18 million dollar buyout and a deep run this year most likely he gets a fat raise too with NC sniffing around.
UNC wouldn't hire Golden even if he was free. Dude sexually harassed and stalked girls at UF.

Pearl is a vile human being. He'll never get an offer.

Michigan will always be football first. Which means their revenue sharing for NIL will always be maxxed out for football. UNC actually gives a larger percentage of the revenue share to basketball's NIL than most schools. I'm not saying May will accept the job. I'm not so brash as to predict that. I'm just saying I could see a pitch that entices a good coach to leave a football first school to come to a Basketball Blue Blood. You pitch him on more NIL money, the history, Michael Jordan in your corner, and the new $1 billion Arena UNC is about to build. You see if his ego makes him want to be the star and not always taking a backseat to football. The worst he can do is say No. And in any event, I will always think it's hilarious Michigan copied UNC's Air Jordan shoe wall when they signed with Jordan Brand. At UNC, that wall makes sense bc Jordan played there. At Michigan, it's just bizarre.

Whose your top 3-4 candidates?
I'm honestly not sure who is interested and who just wants to use us for a raise. The reports are we are swinging for the fences and will be reaching out to a lot of guys: Donovan, Lloyd, May, etc...

I've been saying for a few days I think it will be Mike Malone or TJ Otzelberger.

Malone has ties to UNC or no?

UNC had all those superlatives when Ole Roy retired.

If May wins a title then Basketball has as many crowns as football in 25 years.

Michigan has two billionaire GOATs and team owners in Brady and Jeter. They have barstool. They have one of the richest alumni bases in the country. They have the wide mass appeal brand recognition and popular culture credit.

They need May right now as football transitions and the athletic department navigates its issues.

I mean yeah UNC could very well snatch him and it wouldn’t be a shock. Would make sense in the traditional sense. Big basketball gets rising star coach.

However, I feel like folks sleep on Michigan and how massive, rich, and capable it is.

I honestly think Donovan is the best, reasonable candidate. any fan of a college program mentioning Brad Stephens a possible coaching candidate is delusional. He has one of the best jobs in all of sports period and is successful.

With Donovan it’s just a question of whether or not he really wants to come back to college. He’s still got at least 10 years left if he wants it. And if he does he is not going to get a better job than UNC. (i would have said the same about UK a few years ago and Kansas as well).

His top reasons for leaving Florida supposedly were he hated what recruting had turned into, the lack of fan investment at Florida(he was coming off a Final Four and they struggled to fill a 12,000 seat arena)

I don’t think Lloyd is leaving the west coast. And Arizona is an underrated job. That is arguably a top 5 job in college basketball. With UCLA being more or less dead they’re the premiere basketball team in the west and it’s been that way for years.

My guess is they end up with Donovan, Byington or Otzelberger.

Don't be surprised if UNCheat goes after Pearl. But, I can also see them trying to lure Dusty Mays away from Michigan.
Meanwhile, we slowly fade into mediocrity. 😥

Imagine if Pope made a final four. We'd be stuck with him for 2 decades. Other programs have higher standards than us now.....

Freakin Barnhart man

coming to light on the UNC coaching search

Donovan wants back into college ball and TJ Otzen whatever has an absurdly low buyout.

This isn't true. As a matter of fact, Donovan, after accepting an offer with the Magic, wanted to and got out of his contract to go back to Florida for the next eight years. His reason for accepting the OKC offer was because coaching in the NBA was his dream, and was too hard to pass up.

Yeah that is cheesy AF. I hate when schools do that crap. It’s not cool, it looks desperate.

I’ve wanted Otzelburger the past couple years. He would be a home run.

The same list we have all said on here and the Popettes always came back with, they love it where they are, they already win there, they don’t wanna go to a school who expects things! This is a disaster. UNC is about to be really good for a long time if they get any one of them.
Even guys that used to be pretty good posters are buddying up with the trolls and the Popettes(might as well include them now in that club) lol that’s when you really know a coach is doing bad here when the trolls are siding with them
