In reality though people are going to be upset. They will not hire a coach with zero tournament wins that has never won a conference title like we did. They’ll find somebody good whether it’s Vandy’s coach, Iowa State, Billy D, Oats or Golden.

I think they're gonna have similar issues. A coach like Otz might want a shot at a blue blood. But Oats? Why? He made a FF at a football school. He's making good money and is liked down there. Why would I want to move out of that cushy job where I can apply myself and possibly when a title with MUCH less pressure.
It's gonna take a dude like Hurley/Golden personality to deal with these jobs. Tubby was a RARE combination of good coach and good relations.
If Donovan goes to UNC he has to know he's DEAD to this fanbase. Don't see that happening. Been out too long and hated what recruiting was becoming. I don't see him coming back to a major program.
The current AD and the next AD are handling the hire together. A search firm has been hired too.

Isn’t recruiting much much easier now that you can literally just buy players? The Wild West may actually be the incentive for Donovan to return. Wont have to put in nearly the effort recruiting that he did before…and doesn’t have to worry about breaking any rules cause there ain’t any rules. Keep an eye on Billy D.

Poor phrasing on my part. He’s known as a shooter. I always thought of him as a combo guard as a very casual UNC follower/HS recruiting follower. Sometimes combo guards are good point guards and sometimes they’re Jasper Johnson lol
Maybe, if they hire a true GM and all he has to do is coach. But again, he'd be absolutely dead to this program- like never walk your *** back into Rupp dead if he goes there. That would be like Rick going to KU or Cal going to Duke. UofL is one thing, but going to a blue blood rival?
The only good thing he ever did. I'm still shocked they didn't send cops out on the floor to handcuff all of UNCs players to keep them from winning. Hell, the last time a legend announced retirement the opposing team got no lube..........

That's a 69.8% win percentage over 5 years and that will get you fired if you're at a blue-blood institution not named University of Kentucky.
To be honest, I doubt it. Neither he nor his wife are from anywhere close to Kentucky, and both his playing career and vast majority of his coaching career happened elsewhere. I’m not necessarily saying that he hates us, but I’m not sure I believe we’re some kind of special place in his heart because he was an assistant 30 years ago either.
As I said in another thread, they can now go outside the family because they can cheat all they want in the transfer portal and NIL era. The NCAA approved their academic cheating. They don't have to hide anything.
I have seen his name thrown out there a lot too. It will be interesting to see if they throw a bag at him and if Vandy matches what happens. Everything I am hearing is Vandy has the money to compete on all levels with with everyone, but are they willing to do it.
Its more about equal money and leaving, but I guess we will see. Golden/Florida has a 40.5 million dollar contract with a 30.3 million dollar buyout just to get him in the door before you even pay him his new salary. I just don't see any way Carolina even looks at that. Oats is a little better, but even he has a 18 million dollar buyout and a deep run this year most likely he gets a fat raise too with NC sniffing around.
My guess is you are getting ready to see a whole crapload of these successful guys get some big fat raises real fast with this job open. If Kansas comes open too its really going to get pricey for them.

Yeah I know some coaches buyouts are crazy, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be amended or worked out in the right situations. Some schools may take a % of that if the coach wants to leave for real.
Definitely not good news they fired him, I wanted him there forever. If they get Otzelburger they will be good for a long time again. He is who we should have went after.
