How would you fix College Hoops?

It’s obvious that interest in the sport has significantly dwindled in the last decade, especially the last 5-6 years.

What would you do to fix it? Some obvious ones for me are:

-Two and Done
-More big time Home and Home series (Duke vs UK)
-Start the season in January to avoid College football/NFL season.

What say you?

Two-and-Done is controlled by the NBA. You would think it's a "no-brainer" but they've shown no sign they'll change.
It seems coaches shy away from big time home-and-home series because they don't want that likely "L" when they're playing on the road. Pussies.
If we started the season in January, it would end in May as students are studying for finals.

I'm afraid that interest in college basketball is going to continue to decline in terms of attendance. My big-screen us just too convenient and it doesn't cost me anything.

I wish I had a worthy idea. But today, I'm just too glass "half-empty."

How would enforce the 2 and done ? If a kid decides to leave after 1 year there is no way to stop him and the nba would take him after 1 year .

3 and done (college football is exploding because of this)
start the season in spring when there is just baseball on TV (LOL)
reduce the amount of fouls called
have a ref union that deducts pay from refs if they make 10+ wrong calls
move the 3 point line back to its original position
bring back home and homes and promote the home n home rivlary games (why do you think duke-unc gets a lot of viewers?)
eliminate the BS charging call
punish cheaters

Illegal defense rules, specifically defensive 3 seconds, no off ball double teams, no charges by secondary defenders in the paint or otherwise expand the arc

Increase paint size to pro/international measurements

Eliminate perimeter ball fakes as automatic travel violations. Players have to actually shuffle their feet in order for a violation to occur.

Eliminate the one and one, and award a double bonus on the 8th team foul.

Make almost everything review-able for P5 games, have a 3rd party reviewing plays for refs similar to the NBA's Secaucus set up.

Eliminate all preseason practice restrictions.

3&done is an nfl rule , the nba would have to make that rule. College basketball has no way to make kids stay more than 1 year .

There is no way to enforce a 3 and done rule unless theNBA says so. It’s an NFL rule, not ncaa.

I agree about the bs charge call. They should eliminate just jumping in front of someone. Seems like it used to be that you had to be there and set before the player started his move?

A foul is a foul and should be called. I would give the refs the option to look at controversial calls and reverse or change it. Maybe eliminate touch fouls 30 feet away from the basket.

Expand the 3 second lane to NBA width, making any foul contact in the paint an automatic defensive foul (this should stop all the ******** charge/block calls that Refs seem to have difficulty with).

Two and done or adopt a model like CFB. Allow them to declare for the NBA after high school. If they want to go try and make $, then let them.

Ease up on the 5000 whistles per game by the refs.

Keep virtue signaling, finger pointing, supporting violent Marxist organizations and wOkE politics out of college basketball.

For Kentucky and Cal...start running some resemblance of an offense. Literally anything.

Can any of the Cal defenders even explain and specifically point out what offense Cal runs? What offense has been run this year? What offensive schemes etc stand out?

Id like to see the 3 pt line moved back . The 3 pt. shot has become too dominant in the game and I think it would open up the floor. And a defensive player standing in the lane with both hands holding his nuts and his eyes closed should not be rewarded, it is not a basketball play ! Coach K has probably won 3 championships using that strategy.

I have never disagreed more with a statement than this one. The time it takes to play the last 2 minutes of a game is already intolerable. Taking 15 minutes of real time to play 2 minutes on the clock is already killing the game.

colleges could always not allow kids to come in the first place unless they signed an LOI/ scholarship stating they’d stay in school for 2 years?

is that an option? Genuinely asking.

Well, there is a way. Colleges could not allow players to come to the school unless they agreed/ signed an LOI/ scholarship that states they must stay at least 2 years etc.

If they don’t want to oblige then they can go G league or just train on their own time for the NBA draft.

Don’t know , how would you punish them if they broke the contract? Pay back the cost of their scholarship ? That might help with the guys that aren’t projected to be drafted, maybe. Having to sign that contract would probably push a lot more kids to Gleague. Maybe that would be a good thing?

Make all college sports rules the same. If a player wants to go pro straight out of High School, let him go. I believe baseball does that. If he elects to go to college, he must stay 3 years. If the player can't maintain at least 3.0, he should NOT play. If at least 60% of the players don't graduate, lose one scholarship in basketball, and 5 in football. It's time for players to realize they are there to get a degree if they don't turn pro.

The NBA couldn't care less about college basketball or about trying to help it. You think NBA owners care one iota about college basketball? They do not.

Basketball only takes a couple of guys to be able to win. NBA teams pick a guy on potential and if he works out great, if not, they draft another one or sign a FA or make a trade. They are not gonna change it because it has little effect if it doesn't work out.

NFL is a complete different animal and so is the MLB. Takes multiple guys at multiple positions to win. That's why they have their rule. Need seasoning and experience to compete in their leagues.

I still don’t think there is any enforcement. Maybe pay back scholarship but the NBA would probably pay that for them.

It might put the thought in the players mind that they would not go in as one and done. That would help.

Good luck being the first school to implement that policy. Sounds like a good way to make sure you'd never get a top recruit again.

Now, if the NCAA were to implement that policy and (cough....cough) actually enforce it, THEN you might be onto something.

The problem with fewer whistles is that it just allows team to play a more physical style without worrying about getting called for fouls. I think this would be an advantage for less talented teams.

Yeah, I should have clarified. By that dream rule I meant the NCAA enforce it across the board.

Even just 2 years.

—Three and done
—Zero ******** about amateur status. Let no one pay a kid to go to a school or promise him money/contract to go to a school. But any money a kid got before he chose his school means bupkiss to anyone. Stop wasting my damned tax dollars on it (most of the NCAA being public schools)
—Move the three point line *IN* three feet. You’ve heard me ***** before about all the reasons moving it out was stupid and here’s one more: You can’t give something by taking something else away. If shooting from farther back could ever help offenses in the real world, don’t you think a single coach would have had his kids shoot from back there before the line moved back? F*cking duh!!!! You didn’t give them shooting from farther back. You just just took everything else away. Stupid NCAA trolls are stupid.

Three and done, or none and done whatever you want to call it. College Baseball has had it figured out for years, if you want to turn "pro" after high school, go forward and prosper. If you want to go to college, feel free to do so, but you must stay three years.

Violation investigation speed needs to be tremendously accelerated. Investigation, penalties assessed, and closure should take no more than 120-180 days.

Eliminate the charge call--it's not hard to see an offensive player gain an advantage--so just call an offensive foul if they do so. Anyone falling down to draw a "charge" needs to be given a flagrant technical foul for flopping.

Make coaches sit during the live action so the players have control. If you want to "coach your team" there's a neat thing called practice to get it done. Empower the players to play the game, not coaches dictating every possession.

Automatic ejection for any coach who steps foot on the court during a game.

Do away with stupidity of never calling a double dribble unless it's Lance Ware to begin the UGA game. He committed a violation but so do at least 5 players in a given game when they double and sometimes triple dribble only to be given the "juggling signal" by a ref saying player never possessed the ball--except for Lance Ware of course.

1 Timeout a half per team--2 total. TV timeouts are 4 a half--no need for the allotment these control freaks are given to slow a game down.

Any foul given up when a team is attempting a fast break is 2 pts on the board for a team and the ball. No FT's taken--it's a flagrant violation of rules to help teams keep opponents from scoring in open court. Yet another awful adaptation from International Basketball and FIBA that is starting to ruin American basketball.

Start the 5 second count the minute a ball is touched by team about to take it out--not after they wait for designated inbounder to get it--and that guy throws it to ref to "check" and then 5 second count begins while 10-12 secs tick off the clock.

Wipe away team fouls at 10 min mark of a Half. Enough with the FT dominated games due to the over offciated games.

Go back to 2 man officiating crews.

Give teams 8 secs to get the ball over halfcourt.

Make refs NCAA employees and publish reviews after each game. Punish the bad refs.

Enforce the rules on everyone, including Duke, Jailhawks, and UNCheat

Sweet 16 on has 4 refs and a crew chief. Someone is having a bad day like Higgins in 17, sit him down and bring the fourth guy in.

Keep the charge call, but change it to favor the offense more. Also, a flop is now a technical or flagrant one or whatever it is called now

Some really good ideas here, I have a couple of more:

Eliminate the live ball time out. Imagine this in the NFL. Tom Brady drops back to pass, here comes JJ Watt about to break him in half, Brady calls time out.

On a legitimate jump ball possession goes to the defense. They won the battle already.

While I am on a jump ball, a loose ball on the court generally is controlled by one player and others pile on, or knock other players out of the way. It should be called a foul, but it very rarely ever is. It is not a fumble recovery.

What say you?

-6 fouls allowed for players (maybe potentially allow unlimited fouls but each foul after 6 is 2 shots and the ball)
-Remove charge and blocks (just try it for a bit. I'd like to see more plays at the rim and less people sliding under players in the air. The refs wouldn't be forced to commit to a call and can leave it a no call. If ball is lost, its a loose ball. If a player is hit in the act of shooting and the shot was affected, a foul would still be called as a shooting foul. Would force the defender to commit to either blocking the shot, or giving up the field goal to prevent fouls. The offensive player would risk losing the ball if they ran over another player, traveling or getting blocked at the rim. Feel this would encourage offensive flow...just an idea I would like to see how it works)
-Reduce shot clock to 28
-8 second backcourt
-remove offensive goaltending
-remove traveling call when players stutter step before dribbling (its not a travel, and if it is, it isn't called consistently)
-Remove technicals for spiking ball or hanging on the rim (just stupid to expect players to not show emotions)
-Remove shooting fouls that occur after the ball has left the shooters hand. This happens for 3 pointers often. If the ball has left the shooters hand, how is a defender running into him affect the shot?

these are just ideas, not sure how effective they would be in practice
