I think there is a misconception here that pike needs to and will “hit the portal” hard in the off-season. It’s really now that pike through BK and company are reaching out to targets through handlers . Same is going on in reverse as probably Cliff’s handlers are getting contacted . It’s a very very shady business that we all love here. NIL or not this stuff is shady and we embrace it .
The athletic (a subscription site behind a paywall, which is why I didn’t link) has a good article on it now for those interested.

Yeah, not officially allowed to make contact or tamper... but there's plenty of avenues to unofficially gauge interest. Last year we saw plenty of guys who hit the portal and were already committed elsewhere that day or the next.

I'm sure there are plenty of guys who just hit the portal and wait for contact... but also plenty who are hitting the portal because they already have a landing spot.

There will also be a ton of portal entries after the season ends, and again after the tournament, as players assess their future or recent coaching changes.

Here are a couple of coach quotes from the athletic article :

“The work is being done now. You’re a fool if you think a kid pops up in the portal and it’s, ‘Oh, he’s in the portal.’ Nah, that work is pretty much done, if he’s going somewhere. They’ve already been making calls to coaches. Literally, as I’m talking to you, I’ve got four text messages from AAU coaches saying, ‘Hey, this kid might not be at this school next year. What do you think?’”

“I got hit last night about a kid who is … a big-time player on a good team. Well, he apparently likes how we play, so they reached out to us. And on the flip side, we got people tampering with our guys. We’ve got a freshman, who just told me that his old coach said people have been reaching out about him transferring. Nobody is safe.”
