How many practices do we get?

Usually a benefit of bowl games is the # of practices (15) provided between end of season and bowl game at 20 hrs per week.

Is it still beneficial for younger players or will this be more if a gift for seniors that have never gone?

I see no downside in this. If we get killed nobody is surprised and coaching staff say this was good exp for the young kids and we didn't have any time to plan (prob also playing without our top 4+ players). If somehow we win (or even play well) its great for recruiting. Lets go!

Just for fun — let’s think this through. Assuming we get the formal bid today (and I think somehow it ends up not being us), no practice today but everyone travels back to campus. We practice on 12/24, 12/25, 12/26, 12/27, 12/28, 12/29, and travel walk through on 12/30. So, best case scenario we get 6 real practices.

I was never a big believer in the benefit of extra practices
It can be argued that the transition from the end of one season and into the next is the Bowl practices and Bowl game that follow the end of the regular season. Those practices are a combination of preparation for the Bowl game and extra work like a Spring practice.

All that said, how can extra practices ever be a negative? And in this bizarre situation, for us it’s probably the biggest benefit of the entire deal.

I don't think they are a negative. I just dont see any big advantage in extra practice. An extra game is an advantage I think (2005 Insight Bowl was good for RU) but I don't think RU is going to play OSU better next year because of extra practices. RU played UCF in 2009 bowl and was terrible in 2010

Rutgers lost 6 games in a row after the Army game in 2010. You do know what happened in that Army game, right?

I've never understood how the extra practices in December could make much difference for the future either. But I've heard coaches say otherwise, so I just accept it...

Yes - but RU was terrible before that - lost to a bad 4-8 Tulane team before the Army game (which RU won btw.). 2010 team could not block and set D1 sacks allowed record. Not blocking is how Tom Savage got multiple injuries and ended his RU career in 2010 (freshman all-American in 2009). Losing Savage was a major downturn for RU ball.

Many year ago RU was in contention for a very early Bowl game, which would not have given the team the ability to have 15 practices before the game was played, at a TD Club meeting Schiano said that every team gets the ability to practice 15 times, regardless of when the bowl game is played, so a team can practice after the bowl game to get all 15 allowed practices.
