How Many Carries?

Should be designed/dedicated for Sellers each game?

I don’t know that many should be designed or designated. However, Sellers should use his legs when it’s available. With his ability, he should be breaking defense’s spirits by scrambling on 3rd downs when they don’t contain him.

But for that to happen, he has to beat them with his arm enough and that didn’t happen last season. Of course we tried to make him a pocket passer which was ridiculous.

So I’d like to see Sellers carry the ball 8+ times per game, but only a couple of those should be designed in my opinion.

I personally think it would be wise to shoot for 5 designed carries a game. He’s 6’3” 245 and can take it the distance. Five plays a game isn’t that lofty a goal and really at that size, he should be a intentional part of the run game.

I think one planned carry per drive is appropriate if the the drive is not a three and out. This keeps the defense honest and unable to focus on the RB only and also occupies a defender.

Every opponent knows to put at least one dedicated defender on Sellers to stop him from running. Illinois showed the world how to shut him down.

Great, takes one away from Defense!! A linebacker dedicating to that short 8-10 yard crossing pattern

Unfortunately, Sellers isn't enough of a threat throwing the ball to that crossing pattern to make that a viable plan. Sellers has a cannon arm but his touch on the shorter throws is awful. Harbour running three yards behind the defender 40 yds downfield is where Sellers shines.

Sellers's best talent is his running. We should use that. Id say 8+ carries a game.

It risks injury, but what are we really gaining by having him sit in the pocket?

Unless he improvesbhis passing a lot, we would need to run the offense through his strengths, not his weaknesses.

He is a really good running back playing QB. I've said for a long time, Sellers is a typical great HS QB. He is a great athlete and in HS, his legs would be his primary weapon. He has a huge arm, he can throw the ball a mile, but he isn't a good passer. His default setting is to pull the ball down and run. If the run isn't there, he tries to extend the play by running to the sideline. In HS, he would be able to beat the defender to the edge and run for yards, that does not work against SEC level defensive talent, even the D linemen are fast enough to stretch the play out to the sideline.

I think delay draws and true QB options are the best uses for him as a runner. He should get 10 designed carries a game.

RPO should always be an option
I say screw the RPO. Call plays and let him execute. Frankly it seems like far more QBs struggle with all the reads on RPOs than thrive.

More that that, it seems like the running game suffers even more. We also need to call set running plays, and some of them even off tackle instead of between them.

IDK, seems like he should be used more like a Cam Newton. Or have defenses figured that out?

He is nothing like Cam Newton. Cam could take over a game by himself. That is why he won the Heisman. Sellers is a mediocre at best QB.

Newton and Sellers operate(d) under different mindsets. Sellers will take it if you give it to him, otherwise he’s bailing; hence the sliding and running out of bounds five yards in front of the marker on fourth down. Newton didn’t care whether it was given or not, he was taking it. Sellers plays to protect future earnings, Newton played to win games.
