How long until Florida falls off the map?

The Gators were terrible this past season, and will likely lose their top recruit this upcoming season. I realize whoever they pick as a coach is a big factor, but unless its Gregg Marshall, I don't see Chris Mack or Archie Miller keeping Florida at the "Donovan level". With Donovan gone, I see Tennessee, Miss St, Auburn, and Arkansas passing up florida on the SEC pecking order due to their big coaching hires/current coaches.

I will love and enjoy the demise of florida basketball. Their fans were some of the absolute worst. 19 years of caring less about florida basketball unless Kentucky came to town had to weigh on Donovan. The Florida demise will be as sweet as sugar.

Agree, they won't be able to land another K(who could), but Duke is a blue blood, they'll get a big time coach. Billy WAS Florida basketball. I hope they rot at the bottom of the league.

They are done for good unless something shocking happens. They will make NCAA Tourneys here and there, but do not see them making another Final Four for a long long time, if ever.

Depends on the hire. Attractive job. It's been proven as a place you can win big. Talent-rich state. Coaches seem to love working for Foley.

Honestly it really just depends who they get. i doubt they ever make the height that Billy brought them to. Like a poster said they will make the tournament on and off but nothing like 4 final fours and 2 titles.

If they hire Pelphrey or Grant than they are screwed for a long time!

If they are able to get someone like Archie Miller or maybe even Chris Mack then I think they can stay relevant. They are running out of time though, better figure something out quickly.

Why do people think Foley, the AD at one of the 10-15 best jobs in the land, would hire two guys who've been fired from SEC schools?

They were in the Final Four a couple years before Donovan was hired.

They have money to burn, and a big, talent-rich state.

With the right hire, I think they stay in that Top 15ish range as a program.

I suspect -- but can't prove -- that Coach K died a few years ago and that they've been using his animatronic corpse. This past year the tissue around his nose and mouth collapsed so expect to see a remarkably younger looking all-new silicon version 2 next season.

I wrote a post that got me banned on inside the gators.

It basically said 30 years from now they'll look up at those two sparse banners and tell tales of how billy the kid took it to the cats. All while chlorine fills the air.

It was great work.

They need the right coach, likes other have said.

Florida is a talent-rich state and the Gators, despite their recent down slide and losing BD, are still the premiere program in the state. Arguably, they are the premiere program in the deep south, which includes South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, etc.

You guys need to calm yourselves, lol. Surely, yes, we will take a step back, but Billy was an elite coach. You think Kentucky won't take a step back when Cal leaves? Even a home run hire can't match what Cal has done for you guys.

We are hearing that Foley is interested in Michael White. Not sure if he really wants to leave LT, as he turned down both Tennessee and Missouri recently.

Been there, done that. We've won national titles with 5 different coaches. Don't expect Cal to be the last, history has proven that.

That is not at all what I said. I am not disputing that a new coach can win an NC at Kentucky. Surely they can, and will. But get to four Final Four's, an Elite EIght, a title and a runner-up in six years?? That is a run which will likely never be matched in the modern era, (and it is obviously ongoing).

You can't honestly be excited about a guy like Mike White, right? I mean, that would be a horrible hire plus a HUGE let down for the (dumb, IMO) UF fans who thought Marshall, Miller, etc...were legitimate options.

Mike White is a fine coach but to go from him to Donvovan is not just taking a "step back", it's turning around and running miles in the opposite direction.

I am excited about any hire not names Pelphrey or Grant, at this point. Those guys would be "turning and running miles in the opposite direction," as you say. He runs an up tempo offense, is young, knows Florida recruiting, and has averaged over 27 wins the last three years. We could definitely do worse.

Mainly though, he is a "Foley" type of hire. Same type of guy Donovan was when Foley hired him. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Done for good? No. If they can bring in a guy like Archie Miller/Greg Marshall, or some other young, talented coach, they can get back to relevancy pretty quickly, imo. Even if they hire a "transition coach (cough BCG cough)" until they can get someone great, I think it is an enticing job.

Other than Ben Howland the newest group of coaches likely won't do as well as you are expecting. Avery johnson hasn't coached a college game in his life and Rick Barnes could barely win with the wealth of Texas talent he always had. Plus this is still basketball and this is still the SEC so I'll believe it when i see it. To me it seems like it would be easier to get a decent hire in to keep a good thing going like Florida than it would be to build/rebuild a program like Auburn, Alabama etc.

Rick Barnes, Ben Howland, Bruce Pearl, Mike Anderson, Cal of course, Frank Martin, Andy Kennedy. All those guys are above Mike White or Chris Mack.

Florida and their croc wearing fans are toast.
