Depending on the "don't pass, don't play" rules in a given school system, HS kids can already play until they are 21.

They already are. Kids are reclassifying as late as 9th grade. Why would you want to stay in HS that long?

I knew a couple kids who did it so they would be a year older and physically bigger/better for college recruiting.

And I dont think it worked in either case.

Holding kids back until they are 6 to start kindergarten so they will be bigger and physically better at sports is a common practice these days. I think it is a pathetic move by the worst kinds of "sports parents".

Nature has a way of leveling the playing field around middle school regardless of that extra year. The naturally gifted athletes rise to the top and the less talented settle out, even if they are a year older.

No idea if it was true or not, but I think that idea drives most of these parents.

I can see "rwdshirting" in kindergarten for various reasons. But doing it in middle school or highschool? I would not do that.

I had a late birthday for school admission purposes. I was still 17 entering college. Athletically it was always a handicap for me.

I'm not saying I wish I had been held back, but if I had been I would have been considerably better athletically.

And his brother who is on a Pro scout team

Those could also be situations where there is correlation without causation. Both of them were probably great athletes regardless of whether they were held back or not.

I think holding a kid back benefits the kid up until middle school or maybe the first year of high school. Puberty, genetics and talent really level the playing field after about age 13.
