How important is the Kansas game?

What “computer models”? We finished 98th and they 156th in Sagarin last season. Tells me (almost) all I need to know.

The OP has talked about all the research he's done on this particular game in another thread yet when questioned falls back on some mysterious "computer models" as the only thing he seems to know.

I submit computer models in May are worthless when so much changes year to year in CFB. There are too many unknowns for the data to be meaningful imo. How does a computer rate a new QB? What if a team adds a 5*RB? How do you determine improvement year to year ahead of time?

It matters to the fanbase. That’s about it. Two of the nation’s worst teams chucking down pillows at each other. Until proven otherwise, they’re the worst P5 school in the nation. We’re the 3rd worst.
I didn't say this game mattered nationally. I'm talking about how important it is to the program and Ash's future.

I have been worried about this game since the schedule came out. I have no idea if Kansas is improving, but this would be a horrific loss perception wise as everyone thinks Kansas is terrible at football, worse than us. I think Lewis or Gio will be the starter for that game as Art won't survive tOSU game the week before. I do think our defense has the potential to be very good, but the offense has to have a pulse this year.

We did go on the road and beat Illinois and last year our offense was so bad. But assuming we come off a beat down by tOSU, they are just so talented, can Ash pick up the team for Kansas. Same old Rutgers could be the cry after we play the Buckeyes, unfair, but it will happen. Like him or not, Schiano eats freshman QB's for breakfast. We have to beat Kansas, Buffalo and Illinois to avoid the same old Rutgers stuff.

Ah yes. IMHO, if this game is lost, the fanbase will be calling for Ash’s head, but he’s going nowhere. What our fanbase refuses to recognize is that Kansas has made strides in performance, even if it doesn’t show in the W-L column. They are going to be fielding Beatty’s first recruiting class as seniors and their roster is growing in depth from Beatty’s year 1.

There is absolutely no evidence that Kansas has made strides. This game should be a blow out like Illinois away last year.

As usual, Rutgers fans give opponents all the credit in the world while marginalizing any improvements made by Ash.

I guess you're right. Ash has been sitting on his *** all this time.

I suggest not playing any starters at OSU, perhaps we shouldn't even go to the game. We will lose by 40 or 50 or more and guys will get hurt. We need our starters healthy for Kansas and the rest of the winnable games

Start Gio against Tex St. If he is doing well and we take big lead, give Art some significant playing time. If Gio is doing poorly and we are losing or in close game, bring in Art. No matter what happens vs. Tex, give Gio the start in Columbus and leave him in for entire game to take the beating. Start Art vs. Kansas and, hopefully, the rest of the season

In 2015, a Rutgers team that is arguably at least as talented as the current team took the devastated 0-12 Kansas team (Beatty's first year) behind the wood shed at HPSS. They were so overwhelmed they didn't know what hit them. Final margin of victory was (gasp!) 13 points. It is absolutely inconceivable that 2018 will be a competitive game in Lawrence.

It's not about giving them all the credit and marginalizing Ash's efforts. Both teams are in the doldrums. Beatty has a one year head start on Ash. They are the home team. Nobody's saying Kansas is ready to take on Bama. I actually expect Ash & company to take a narrow victory. But I certainly wouldn't be surprised if the home team emerges victorious and I definitely don't think Ash's career would be put on the line by such a loss because in reality, the two teams are pretty darn close in terms of performance. Yes, Kansas is dreadful, but I haven't seen a damn thing from our team to suggest that we're any better.

See that quote from you. That's the problem with Rutgers fans. You don't realize or see you're knocking Rutgers subconsciously. We look to put others on a pedestal while searching any for a chink in the armor when it comes to Rutgers. Btw, how in the hell can you say you haven't seen any improvement from Ash and Rutgers. Comparing the last 3 seasons Ash has moved the bar a lot further than Kansas. Ash has continued to improve the number of wins for Rutgers each of the last 2 seasons. Exactly how many wins does KU have during the same period? Yeah, Beatty has KU on the fast track to success. Beatty was 0-12 his first season, then followed by a 2-10. Last year KU was 1-11. What are you talking about? Now, if you want to talk about the fundamentals of the game as a way to judge the teams, then I'm all in. That right up my alley.

Why isn't a Rutgers fan allowed to knock Rutgers? As long as you're not personally attacking a coach or player or lying about them, I see nothing wrong with tough criticism. In my opinion, Ash deserves scrutiny after the Eastern Michigan debacle. That was unacceptable to me as a Rutgers fan.

You're right when it comes to criticism of the team, but the level at which it takes place seems a little harsh. Nothing is ever right at Rutgers. First, it's the coaching; then it was the lack of talent on the roster. I recall fans blaming the school for the lack of financial support while removing themselves from the equation.

Ash should be held responsible for the EMU mess, but fans are quick to forget he won 3 B1G games in the same season. This was a year after winning not a single B1G game. If you can show me where KU has demonstrated considerable improvement under Beatty, then I'll shut up. History has shown Rutgers fans love nothing more than to complain about everything. Are you one of those fans who b*tch when spectators stand in front blocking your view? [winking]

For the record, I was big on Ash at the beginning, but now I'm taking a wait and see approach.

Good post.

In 2017 1-11 Kansas beat a 1AA team, 3-8 Southeast Missouri. 4-8 Rutgers beat 3 B1G teams along with a bad 1AA. No comparison.

Really? Analytics don't take into consideration the mindset of young men or the fact some things will change between now and game time. The impact of some of the young guys isn't factored into the equation because they are unknown. Football is more about emotions, match-ups, etc. than crunching numbers while sitting at a desk. Think about it, should Rutgers men's basketball team have beaten Indiana and Minnesota in the B1G Tournament? Analytics didn't see that one coming. It's not all about numbers.

All I've been saying is that it's a toss-up game. That's far more rational than suggesting that Rutgers, which couldn't beat Eastern Michigan at home last year, will waltz into Kansas and destroy the Jayhawks. There's no recent evidence to suggest Rutgers is capable of blowing out any FBS team, especially on the road.

I agree with you on the game being a toss-up, but the way you're OP came across I thought you were saying Rutgers was going to get blown out. Based on my experience, when teams are close in talent and expectations, the advantage goes to the visitors. It's easier to focus as a group on the road.

"They are going to be fielding Beatty’s first recruiting class as seniors" is a fact, not an opinion.

So what? Are they stars? What do you know about the class? How many are still there?

In addition to players who used up their eligibility or left early for the NFL (1), Kansas has lost 9 additional underclassmen from last year. Fact

The KU recruiting classes from '14-'16 average ranking is 72nd. Fact

Rutgers may start as many as 7 seniors on defense. Fact

I guess we should be punching our ticket for Indianapolis.

I have to hand it to you, this has been some 1st class trolling. I'll be interested to see how long you last. Hopefully a long time because I enjoy it.

Yes, I am "trolling" by suggesting a road game against a Power 5 team isn't a guaranteed Rutgers blowout win. You nailed it.

On the contrary. Suggesting that there is a strong possibility that we will lose to the #124 ranked team in all FBS football is worse than trolling.

The over/under on season wins for Rutgers is 4. So the experts are predicting that Rutgers stays static. If you think that's "just silly," I will assume you're on the next flight to Vegas? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Did RU blow out Illinois on the road last year? Deja Vu all over again. If not we have troubles.

What game were you watching? We didn't blow out Illinois. We won by 11. We were in control the entire game but they started to come back at the end. What Indiana did to us was a blowout. The Illinois game wasn't a blowout.

When we lost to EMU many just chalk it up as **** happens. When we play Kansas, we are playing the worst P5 team or at least that is the general perception, we lose and we get that crown. Doesn’t matter that we won 3 B1G games last year and they won 0 P5 games all year. This game is huge and would be a devestating loss to Ash’s legacy...

It's a shame to think that this is really a "toss-up game" isn't it? IMO it's not a toss up, this is a game we must win in Year 3 of the Ash Era...unless we suffer some serious injuries before this game there is no excuse to lose to Kansas (even on the road)...of this is truly a bowl team like many of us believe it could be this isn't a toss up game this is a game we absolutely win...Indiana is a toss up game to me...

We dominated Illinois and outcome was never in doubt. We were leading 28-10 on the road into the 4th quarter. Illinois gets a late nothing touchdown in the 4th. Okay if the game wasn't a blowout, it surely was a convincing win on the road. Absolutely no reason why we should not do the same against Kansas. The same Kansas team we beat by two touchdowns two seasons ago? It is a must win game.

Kansas has two games (Nicholls State and Central Michigan) before us. Last year they lost to Central Michigan 45-27. Didn't play Nicholls State last year (they were an 8-4 team though). We'll see if they have improved any by then.
