Yeah cause it worked so we'll ! Just the last two years alone nearly 9000 yards and that's just passing ... better hope the midgets can even remotely slow it down ... which credit to where credit is due they slowed it some last year but forget that Dax and company throat punched the Raiders in front of national tv to the tune of ZERO points ! That has to still sting all these months later

Stop the run with a 3 man front and have everyone else in coverage and pray that works and put about 35 points! Easier said than done lol

This is a great question, and obviously the most important question is what do they dominantly to. 5 in the box and cover everyone else up, mix up your coverage and blitzes from that position. If you are in a 4-3, play a 4-1, 3-5 stack, keep six in the box, bail the second OLB every now and then to give a cover 2/4 look. Teams that are good at both running and throwing, biggest thing you have to do is continue to make them line up, because eventually they will make a mistake, you cannot blitz to just blitz against these teams it needs to efficient and off of a key. Most offensive coaches that run the system do not have the patience to accept the 3-4 yd play. They are built on the big play. Best thing you can do is frustrate them early. My two cents, carry on

Mix coverages and keep what you have to in the box to slow down/ stop the run. If it is a running QB that causes you do keep at least 6 in the box. If it is a heavy bubble team, rob it with the C or overhang LB. Safeties cover the vertical threat. The game is now played sideline which really causes a lot of problems for the defense. Need to give the defense another player! Or at least let us hit the receivers when the ball arrives to knock it loose.

Thanks CM3 and Steelers! These type of opinions are what I'm looking for. These Lion and Cramper fan comments are like their brain matter, soft and scarce. BTW Steelers, hope all is well.

I too would like to keep 6 in the box with hybrid type guys on the edges. The run can certainly gouge you. But it's the short passing game that turns into long yardage that needs to be stopped. I say less deep safeties and more route reading dbs playing tight (5 or less yards) and switching by rule considering the midpoint of their zones. Keep 1 maybe 2 safeties back depending on situation, but stem them from a tight alignment begging the offense too throw deep. Got to have at least one kid with range and instincts. The others man up and harass.

It's hard to pressure a quick release passing game, but much easier if you make em throw long.

I'm a 2 on1, 3 on 2 and 4 on 3 believer, on the wide outs, with your outside underneath backer being that extra guy. He's my hybrid. Gotta set a tight edge, but still be able to cover.

The problem is that no matter how good your d line is, the ball is out of the qb's hand very quickly, and from the shotgun.

True, but #3 going vertical scares me. Backer takes inside quicks and safety keeps an eye on deep routes. Crossing is all backer if not in man.

A deep cross from 1,2 or 3 is hard to stop in zone or man. That's where pressure comes in. It takes time to throw a deep crossing route or dig.

Only way to stop a spread offense with athletes is to have more athletes with speed. Otherwise, no matter what the defense, its a losing battle.
