How do you guys feel about changing high school names

because of past events. The local high school is the Robert E Lee Fighting Leemen. Every couple of years a group raises it's head to try to change it. Now there are signs that say "save the name" and there are also signs that say "but the name hurts". There is a school to in Mt Jackson named for Stonewall Jackson, one in dayton named after Turner Ashby, and one in Fort Defiance with the nickname Indians. As far as I know there is no campaign to change any of those names. Why are people so upset about a freaking name?......The only answer as I see it is to take away all nicknames from every school and just make it the name of the place where the school is......this is so useless...

I don't believe anything should be named after people that tried to destroy our country.......especially when the renegades had a core belief in slavery.

They never should have been named after those traitors. I don't really see how the nickname Indians is offensive. Redskins......maybe.

On one hand people that don't want the name changed say "It's just a name, why are you getting so upset about it?" But OTOH that same reasoning could be used to justify the name change, as in, "It's just a name so why are you so invested in it staying X instead of being changed to Y?"

That said, I think if people put half as much effort into changing things that matter as opposed to symbolic things that nobody even notices until a big deal are made out of them then things would be a lot better. Suppose someone that wants a named changed gets the name changed. So what? Then what? Is anything different?

Maybe to avoid all this stuff they should just named things random names, or letters or something. IIRC, in DC streets are named after letters and states (although I guess states are named after something). But anyway, the only reason something has a name is to refer to it, not to make some kind of statement.

Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina are named after British monarchs, albeit not ones that reigned when the Revolutionary War was being fought.

Yeah, but are any named after British people involved in our War for Independence? Is there a "Cornwallis" County? Are the counties named "Clinton" named after British General Clinton?

I wish Canada would just go ahead and annex Michigan.........the United States wouldn't even fight it........
Just think, Hillary might have been President, had that occurred two years ago. Well, not quite, but I assume had Canada also annexed Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, then perhaps it would have been much closer. B1G 10 = TRUMP COUNTRY

I really don't have a dog in this fight....Ravenswood was the Red Devils....we had vikings and yellowjackets and golden eagles and white falcons and blue devils and such, but never anything controversial. One would just think that folks could find something more important to get upset about

Named after Alexander Spotswood who died in 1740.......so no Revolutionary War for him.......But his children and grandchildren were tied heavily to the Rebels (militarily, marriage to Patrick Henry)....

Have no problem with that. MLK was an avowed socialist and socialists will destroy our country. Should we rename all those schools too?

One major difference.....you said "socialists will destroy our country" which is an OPINION.......Confederates attempted to truly destroy our nation by attacking it.......that is a fact.

He was an avowed socialist. You are ignorant of his true believes. Read up on his beliefs. fAfAny school named after a socialist is a black eye on equal rights.

Don't really care about Sinclair, nobody in today's world is protraying him as a something he's not. In fact, I haven't heard that name in decades. Einstein isn't a political figure. MLK was an avowed socialist and is portrayed as great role model. No socialist should be portrayed as anything more than a subversive to the greatest form of government the world has ever seen.

But MLK isn't known for advocating for socialism. He is known for the fight for equality. If Einstein gets a pass because he is known for his contributions to physics, why doesn't MLK get a pass for his contributions to civil rights?

Einstein isn't a "political figure"? If it weren't for his signature on Szilard's letter........the Manhattan Project may have never got going.........

You need to brush up Mr King. Einstein didn't advocate for social upheaval. Those on the left want to rename all the schools, named by democrats by the way to keep the confederate's memory alive, those of us who are informed about Dr King could make the same claim about all the streets named for him. The communist manifesto is all about equal rights too, doesn't work in practice does it?

So, does this same logic work on Trump? Since his "locker room" talk is public record?

Where did Trump talk about redistribution of wealth like socialist want?

I'm talking about IF/WHEN he ever pushes for something for women.........

EDIT: But I guess abusers of women like Trump get a pass as long as they are not socialist.....

I haven't noticed that Trump has been accused of being a serial sexual assaulter. Is there somebody whom you might be referring to other than Trump? By the way, Trump has more women in high places than Obama or Clinton.

yes....just fine....you and I have probably made the same kind of statement in our lives.......and the important thing is that he was NOT in public office when he said (or did) those things....Clinton and the kennedys were.....and to set the record straight... I think he probably did what some say he did, but then again...as a private citizen...big difference when you are on the government till

Did he? Did he bite somebody on the lip and then tell them to get ice on it? HAs anybody accused him of sexual assault? They've accused of consensual sex, far different than the real assualt that occurred under Clinton.
