The entire crew is incompetent.
That was horrible, but nothing compared to all that BS that punk Mason from ISU did to James on that one PR - with the sideline judge standing just a few feet away with both eyes on all the action!
The refs let them play beyond the whistle.

It needs to be investigated how these are both missed. Blatantly missed. None of them saw four guys pulling a returner without the ball?

The revolting play by the ISU DST on that play is absolutely coached. No way it isn't.
One guy runs in late, and directly behind the PR to grab him and then another guy runs in from the side, to help push/pull the returner towards the ball to force contact with it.
No expert, but I think they call that gang violence in street settings.

That was 30 yards of field position that was missed for Iowa.
Amen They missed a lot all night. Like Diaz pi in 4th among many others. Another example of their incompetence after pass that was ruled incomplete late 3rd they never put time back the clock. Let it stay where it was at after running when they blew the whistle to review.

Totally agree, shoved, held an had helmet shoved from behind when he was on the ground. How could they not blow the whistle. Then in the scramble we were lucky to come up with the ball. Refs blew it.

Still scratching my head over the punt thing. If there is someone out there who knows football better than the rest of us, please explain if there is ANY legality for a punt returner to be tackled even if they never touched the ball?
Like, did the ISU players think he touched it and were therefore trying to block him? Or did they think he actually fielded and had the ball, and were therefore trying to make a tackle?

I am no rules expert, but I thought it was pretty clearly their plan to GET him to touch it and “fumble” so they can recover.
I get that, but it looked to me they committed two penalties trying to do that right in front of the official and nothing was called.
Pretty sure their is no rule that allow you to pickup the returner and try and move him to the ball, if thats not at least holding dont know what is
There was a team that tried this BS last week also, with no penalty called. Same result happened where in the process of trying to move the returner into the ball on the ground one of the returners ended up kicking the ball.
Stupid thing about this is, once they touch the ball on the ground, the receiving team basically gets a free play at it. We could have picked it up to try to get something on the return, or if that play went bad we could have chosen to take it where they kicked it.
Absolutely idiotic stuff that the NCAA needs to put an end to. Frankly I’d be threatening players and especially head coaches with ejections for player safety reasons. That was obviously something that was coached. Two players engaged simultaneously once they were in place and a third came in to help less than a second later. That isn’t the case of one player taking things into their own hands.
Fact they literally grabbed and held him before trying to toss him still baffles me how an official doesn’t call holding. It was the most text book case and definition of the penalty if I’ve ever seen one.
This is about as egregious as it gets. Slightly worse, perhaps, than the TWO crucial missed facemasks the refs failed to call @ USC last season.
If this isn't blatant cheating, it's even more blatant incompetence. Either way, this entire crew should be fined AND suspended. I mean that's just plain bullshitt. I can't recall ever seeing such thug behavior right around the ball with three officials a few yards away and NOTHING called. OMG. The NCAA must give coaches TWO challenges per half to rectify such shenanigans. The officials yesterday were simply pathetic, and they need to be publicly sanctioned.
An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty is far more fitting. That’s not even taking into account the two head shoves into the ground after with an official three feet away.
Tackling a player without the football, who is not making a play on the ball, is the definition of unsportsmanlike conduct.
absolutely no legal rules permit that. otherwise why not have the gunner smash every punt returner on every punt regardless of whether he touches the ball.

Vonhamme was also held on two routes, to the point he was pulled backward. No call. One was on the throw to Diaz near the end zone that looked like contact but was fairly clean. That and putting no time on the clock when the review overturned the catch call. Incompetence
As someone who usually leans on the side of letting the boys play, the refs were pretty bad.
I watched that same play in the last day or two where two defenders grabbed the receiver and threw him into the ball and the defending team actually recovered the ball, but the ref came in after the play and made it clear the defenders pushed the receiver into the ball and gave the ball to the receiving team. One of the clones actually kicked back into the ball, but not that mattered to that bunch of big 12 clown refs.
I haven't read that much regarding the game, but late in the game when Moulton was down, a clown came in and grabbed his shoulder pads and pick him up and seemed to twist him around. Then Moulton walked off with his right shoulder hanging down. I suppose that type of play is what you get when a team brings in 83 players from all over the country. Again not one ref say it. lol
So after putting respectable teams on the field for a few years under Campbell, ISU is back to being a garbage program.
they even reviewed the play. i was hoping they would even things out by later on reversing the wr stepping out…but apparently screwups were rigged in one direction

You can’t gain possession by pushing an opponent into the ball. My only guess is some ST coaches aren’t aware of this, aren’t teaching their kids the rule, or they’re just flat out dirty.
