Simply put, in a tough NCAA game, we sure could have used Alex and his experience.

We got away from what we do well.

The nba drafts on unrealized potential; not current talent level.

The college and nba games are vastly different.

It's better to have a handful of great players than a bunch of really good players. Depth is overrated in the ncaa thanks to timeouts etc.

I fully agree with you. We had a four point lead with about 3 mins left. After that we tightened up, Wiscy hit big shots, and the officials missed a call or two. Add that up in a game with very little margin of error and it results in a loss.

I will say though (and yes, I fully realize that the "forum posting" portion of our fanbase is just a microcosm of BBN) that some of the posts this week have resulted in some of dumbest things I've ever read. If people actually 100% believe some of the things they post then they must be absolutely miserable in every aspect of their life, no matter what actually happens.

Because it's a one game scenario you genius's. NBA draft picks don't necessarily make great college players.

You guys are brain damaged.

Did you not see the numbers that Nate Silver did showing that Cal was the 3rd best performing coach in D1 after seeds are taken into consideration? Meaning he coaches above expectations ("coaching up") more than almost any other coach in the country in the tournament.

If UK was losing these big seed upsets or to scrub teams, you'd have a point. God help you if you had to put up with some of the Self and K losses of the past few years.

That Wisconsin team had the highest Kenpom rated O in 15 years. They would've been the #1 rated team in about 2/3s of the previous seasons.

You act like it's some failure of Cal to not beat a team 100% of the time that is just 5-7 points worse than us.

That is absolutely absurd. If you're only 5-7 points better than another team, then you're going to lose like 1/3 of the time. That's just how probability works. This was that 35% of the time.

They were an awesome team and had a great night.

3. Our guards never learned how to defensive rebound this year.

4. The twins were not good enough to exploit Koenig and Gasser, which is absurd.

5. The three straight possessions of failure - partly on Cal, partly on Andrew.

6. Our only consistent threat was Karl Towns. The rest of the roster was very good, but not a one of them was much better in terms of real game impact than guys like Quinn Cook or Nigel Hayes.

We lost the game because we got out scored I am not being a smart butt here. Other than Towns we didn't have a player who who was a consistant shooter or scorer. 9-10 starters for Duke and Wisconsin can score from anywhere on the floor. The only exception was Okafor and he averaged 15 plus a game in the paint. They had the number 1 and 2 offenses in basketball. Also as was said earlier that because the SEC was so bad we regressed from Dec on. I think not having Poythress made a lot more difference than anyone on the staff and media would admit. Our defense looked great because honestly most of the teams we played were totally outmatched physically. Notre Dame had one player over 6-7 and finished in the middle of the ACC and the a missed a shot to beat us. I knew then we were I trouble and not what we thought we were. I never worried about 2012 losing in the NCAA tourney. I worried about this team every game after Hampton. I am not being critical of coach or players but I bet Cal would tell you he got out coached in certain facets of the game and Cal gets paid 7 million a year so he can handle it. He also has had us to 4 final fours in 6 years and we should have at least 1 more championship but didn't get it done. Cal will reload and we will be back. He will make some changes and we will win another championship before he retires. The best championships are the ones we don't expect. Enjoy the ride. Big Skai is on the way.

Come on, man, this is easy. You know the answer. We switch on every screen. Every single one. And guess what, it worked. Statistically, UK '15 was the strongest D in the modern era of college basketball, according to a study by Sports Illustrated.

Each time Booker got abused on defense, it was because he got switched onto either Kaminski, who is 6 inches taller, or Dekker, 3 inches taller. A 2 was guarding a 4 or a 5. Again, that approach was spectacularly successful all year.

So, is it your suggestion Cal should have "prepared better" by abandoning the very approach that was the best in modern history? Should he have made an in-game adjustment by abandoning the switching? In either case, does that communicate a lack of faith and maybe even panic to your players? Isn't that worse over the course of a game than even the 3 breakdowns by Booker?

Its simple. The game is about matchups, and after a season in which we matched up favorably with every opponent, we finally faced a team that we didn't match well. Big, so our length didn't bother them. Not just big, but mobile bigs. They have an unorthodox offense, spreading the floor to pull our rim protectors away from the basket. Good three point shooting. Able to exploit our defense in spots. If you went to a lab and created a team to beat UK '15, that's pretty close to what you'd design.

There is no mystery here.

No way 7 players leave with only 3 projected first rounders and only two second round.
Johnson is gone, fact and is projected late 2nd round
WCS is 99% gone
Towns should be like 110% gone considering he will be 1 or 2 in draft
Lyles is next projection with maybe an 80-90% chance, not sure on him.
Booker is next, doubt he goes. I think he enjoys college.
Both Harrison's are not listed, or one is about last 2nd round - they need to be back, however I'd put them at around 60% gone
Poythress is still an unknown with graduating as a Jr. and already having 2 injuries in college, he may go too
That's actually 8 potentials.

We get Zimmerman if Lyles and one of WCS or Towns leave.
3 others already make the #1 class.

With 8 NBA ready (or one season in prep league), who knows. All the team scouts got to see them a lot pre-season.

In my opinion 4 are gone. We must lose 2 to open scholly's for 3 recruits. We may have an issue with too many PG's for playing time.
Tough decision all around.

I don't want to relive that game, but there is no way in hell our NBA frontcourt and NBA size guards should have lost a rebounding war all year. And we not only lost but were out rebounded by 12. So you can ask how we didn't beat wisky...and I say how the hell do they out rebound us at all let alone that bad. That was the game period.
This. They had 12 offensive rebounds. Assuming they executed at their average for the year on offense, that's about 1.2 points per extra possession generated by those rebounds. That's almost 14.5 points off offensive rebounding alone. With our size, that should have never happened.

and to everyone who keeps pinning it on aaron and andrew, without them, we would have been blown out in the first half. Sure, they have to take their share of the blame, especially on those empty late possessions, but they were our two leading scorers at halftime with 11 and 8, if I remember correctly.

Setting aside NBA "potential" and all that jazz, Wisconsin had the two best players on the court Saturday night ...

That wins you most games.

20 nba players couldnt win if the REFS said so. NCAA wanted Coach K to win a championship for his 40rth year as a coach. There was no team beating duke. Best to accept this is why we lost with 7 nba players

actually we had the best player on the court.. Towns. Unfortunately officials made it a point to make sure that best player kept picking up cheap fouls. That way all year.
