How bad is Lenny Dykstra's reputation?

So bad that it's legally not possible to libel him. Seriously.
Given the aforesaid litany of stories concerning Dykstra’s poor and mean-spirited behavior particularly toward various groups including racial minorities, women, and the LGBTQ community—this Court finds that, as a matter of law, the reference cannot “induce an evil opinion of [Dykstra] in the minds of right-thinking persons” or “deprive him of their friendly intercourse in society,” as that “evil opinion” has long existed.

Can you imagine how that Phillies team from 92 or 93 would be covered today with the way the media is? You’ve got Dykstra who was half nuts back then, Curt Shilling who they definitely don’t like today, John Kruk who is very opinionated and Darren Daulton who thought he had been abducted by aliens. Mitch Williams would be considered boring among that motley crew.

The 86 Mets, likewise. You had Dykstra, Wally Backman, Keith Hernandez, Strawberry, Ray Knight, Kevin Mitchell, Dwight Gooden, Roger McDowell, and manager Davy Johnson, who was drunk half the time. Those guys got into fights in bars, got into fights with each other, destroyed hotels and airplanes, took copious amounts of drugs and alcohol, and somehow managed to win a world series.

I was only 4 in 86 so the first teams I really remember watching were those late 80’s A’s team, those good Twins teams and Sid Bream’s Braves teams but I watched a documentary a couple years ago on that 86 Mets team. You’re not kidding, I don’t know if Charlie Sheen could have handled all the blow a lot of those guys went through.

But speaking of Kevin Mitchell, catching that ball in foul territory over his should with back to the infield with his bare hand while a Giant is one of the best plays I’ve ever seen. It, Willie Mays at the Polo Grounds, Jimmy Edmonds with the diving catch with his back to the infield while with the Angels, and Ozzie Smith diving up the middle where the ball took a bad hop and he snagged it barehanded while with SD are the greatest defensive plays I’ve ever seen.

Fun fact: In game 6 of the 86 World Series (the famous Buckner error), Davy Johnson was looking for Kevin Mitchell to pinch hit in that last inning and he was in the clubhouse in his underwear, talking on the telephone.

A long time ago (mid-80s), I was at a dinner for a Baseball Camp. Dykstra was there (not to mention Hank Aaron and Ralph Garr and Tommy Lasorda). Dykstra was a rookie and he already the cockiest person in the room. Made Will Clark look like a modest choirboy.

Dykstra is a psychopath. There are stories about him crapping in his hotel toilet multiple times and not flushing. When house keeping would come to clean, he would hide around the corner to hear their reactions upon smelling and seeing his mountain of turds.

Had a roommate for one semester- got stuck with him between co-op terms. I’d come home some days to a huge turd in the toilet - and no toilet paper with it. Guy would take a dump and just leave without wiping or flushing.

He used one of those huge 40 gallon garbage cans in the kitchen. He lived by himself before I moved in, and bragged about how he could go two weeks without taking out the garbage.

Experienced a lot of weird **** living with that guy. Eventually got to the point that I did nothing but sleep there once or twice a week - I’d stay with my girlfriend or sleep on the couch at a friends apartment much as I could to avoid the guy. It was really strange because he was cool & normal at school, but weird as hell when you were alone with him. He had two completely different personalities.
