The media always want to call UK racists. Duke has an all white team in 66 wish they played in that championship game. We hire Tubby and our local paper writer I think Marlene Taylor said the fans would lynch him or kill him one or the other. Duke has had how many black head coaches. We do not get a fair shake!!

Just because there isn't much proof Rupp was racist doesn't mean it won't happen. Just look around. We no longer live in a society where justification matters. Those who make the biggest fuss get change. You can liver under rocks if you choose, but don't act shocked when it happens. You were warned!

This. I don't think Rupp was a racist, and I don't think he was any more of a bigot than most of the men in his time. But perception affects recruiting. He looks like a mean old white dude from the 50s and I wouldn't doubt Duke and Tennessee didn't use his name against us in the recent recruiting wins over us.

Rupp built UK basketball into what it is. There's no denying that. But at the end he tried to undermine Coach Hall and even almost went to coach at Duke. Let's not pretend he was anything other than a great basketball mind. His name was on our basketball arena for what...43 years? It's not going to be the end of the world if that changes. Let's not make the whole state look like 1963 Mississippi in fighting it.

I wont be shocked. Ill simply turn my back to UK, permanently.

And then name the rafters Rupp Rafters?
So we disrespect a man by removing his name from the arena where we play basketball because people like you think he was a racist. Then we name the rafters Rupp Rafters. Are you throwing another insult out for consideration.

Here is what we need to do if we take the name off of Rupp Arena. We need to cancel everything Coach Rupp did for the University of Kentucky. Rewrite the record books. Take every victory he coached out of the book. Burn the four NCAA titles he coached and burn every other trophy given to his teams.

Strike that his 1948 basketball team helped the USA win an Olympic Gold Medal and he was a coach on that team. Destroy it all. Then go to the Lexington Cemetery and take down his tombstone because it refers to his coaching UK.

TAKE IT DOWN. IT HAS UK ON IT.

And then, because Kentucky is in the United States, burn down the entire United States. And because the United States is in North America, burn that down, too. And North America is attached to South America so burn down South America. And that's two of the seven continents. Burn down the rest. Burn it all!

Right there with you. Everyone has a right to their own opinion, for sure. And if any of this was REALLY about opening up a racial dialogue, thatd be different. Its a power grab and theyre trying to shane their way into power. UK administration tries to take the cowardly route of appeasement when they have zero reason to, I walk.

I don't want it it changed, but I know the facts about Rupp. But I think a lot of you are completely underestimating the power of media and perception when it comes to racism, particularly in this moment in history. It won't be caving to the Left and BLM, but more accurately not being able to afford the stigma of fighting it and being labeled a racist school. That's the thing about activists, they don't have to be right, they just have to shout lies long enough and loud enough and eventually it becomes 'true'.
What facts about Rupp are you referring to?

Spot on regarding the power grab.

That's why UK should not cave to the Left.

They will never be satisfied.

That’s literally been the far lefts strategy for 20 years...and more recently the not so far left.
Squeaky wheel...given an inch take a mile over decades to get to the Desired end state.

I don't think BBN Arena would work.

I've been doing some research, and it seems there are a lot of members of Big Blue Nation that both openly express and hold latent racist and hateful views. BBN is basically a racist organization sad to say. I suggest something a little more modern: such as The Heshimu Hut or The Daniel Orton Experience.

I'd also suggest moving the arena north to Ohio. Kentucky didn't stand against the Confederacy during the Civil War. Its tone deaf neutrality is a permanent blight. Cincinnati's airport is in the state of Kentucky, so we might as well have the state's basketball arena in the state of Ohio.

Guess we might as well take those 4 banners down that Rupp won. Can't be having titles hanging in the rafters that were because of a racist. (insert sarcasm). The problem with this crap is where does it stop.

Times change, guys. Think about the crap that coaches used to get away with. Bear Bryant made Gillispie look like a softie. And Rupp was the basketball version of Bear. If we take the name off the arena we play in, aren't there other ways we can honor the man's legacy? Like I said earlier, his name has been on the building for 43 years. You can't have a roster of almost all black players, then say "well that's just too bad" when they tell you the name makes them feel uncomfortable. You're just a fan. They are actually putting in the hours of running suicides (not fun), every drill you can imagine, and going to class on top of all that.

I can tell you from personal experience one of our great players from the 50s was as bigoted as they come. Met him at a bar one night and some of the stuff he said made me think "thank God no one from U of L is here to report this." It's how things were back then. Remember Happy Chandler getting in trouble? The 70s were light years ahead of the 50s. The 90s were light years ahead of the 70s. This past decade was way ahead of the 90s. Imagine 20 years from now. I suggest putting up a generic name like BBN or Big Blue Arena so that we'll never have to worry about the sullying of anyone else's name. Let's rip the scab off, let the healing process begin and move on to what we all love...basketball.

I’m not quite sure how yet but I’m fairly certain BBN is racist in some way. It just sounds racist-y and like something a supremacist would say?

I’m still learning though. I will understand and be fully woke soon enough.

Rupp is the foundation. His legacy is under assault and he is being held to standards that didn’t exist in his time. How about we keep the name, honor his legacy and not cower in the face of bigots imposing arbitrary standards on a man long dead.
